Book excerpt: n The Name of Tradition ” A Comprehensive Research Study on Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) in Iran' Including appaendix The Changing Paradigms of FGM 2017 Country Report on Female Genital Mutilation in Iran ABSTRACT: Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) is embedded in the social fabric of Iranian culture within some areas of three western and one southern province. Due to the lack of interest by the government officials, Iranian public is largely ignorant about the subject. Researching FGM/C has been a part of the awareness raising work since 2007 and possibly at earlier times. The work first came to prominence with shooting a film in 2015 “ In The Name of Tradition” , pilot project and later through a comprehensive research published in 2015 , Anthropologist and researcher Kameel Ahmady with a help of fieldwork team have surveyed about 3000 women and men in Iran over a six-year long course. The research showed that FGM/C is practiced mostly by Sunni minorities in West Azerbaijan, Kurdistan, Kermanshah and Hormozgan provinces. Repeated surveys indicating reliability of the gathered data in the same provinces show that the practice is in decline, yet still highly prevalent in some areas. The villages picked as pilot for training showed a great improvement and sharp decline of FGM/C while other highlighted villages still show a slow declining trend. In 2017 Kameel Ahmady and his team returned to the areas in four provinces and assessed the impact of the intervention and the face to face trainings and impact of awareness rising, eradicate or reduce FGM/C rates in West Azerbaijan, Kurdistan, Kermanshah and Hormozgan provinces in Iran as well as up to date and overall description of FGM/C practice. This report “The Changing Paradigms of FGM/C” 2017 Country Report on Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting in Iran presents up-to-date information on FGM/C in Iran after the pilot interventions and the international premier of “In The Name of Tradition” A Comprehensive Research Study on Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) in Iran' conducted by Kameel Ahmady in 4 geographical areas, West Azerbaijan, Kurdistan, Kermanshah, and Hormozgan.

Book excerpt: An Echo of Silence A Comprehensive Research Study on Early Child Marriage (ECM) in Iran Kameel Ahmady Whilst working on the issue of female genital mutilation in Iran “In the Name of Tradition”, in this book, Kameel Ahmady, also brought a focus to the early marriage of children and high rates of this harmful phenomenon in Iran. He conducted a two-year study on child marriage in the seven provinces of Khorasan Razavi, East Azerbaijan, Khuzestan, Sistan and Baluchistan, West Azerbaijan, Hormozgan and Isfahan, drawing on official country statistics. The results of this research have been published in Farsi, Kurdish and English languages. According to the religious structure of Iran, maturity for girls begins with the first monthly menstruation, considered as the threshold of transition from childhood to adulthood which happens around age of 9. This physical and biological threshold means being able to marry, regardless of the actual age and ability to govern your marital life. Although early marriage applies to both young girls and boys, in fact the bitter reality of the society indicates that the consequences and effects of the phenomenon of child marriage on girls are far more serious and dangerous. Undoubtedly, social investment in girls, expanding their social and economic capital and ensuring their access to education and health services is a clear driver towards gender equality to provide for stronger communities; but child marriage does the contrary. A lack of independent and credible studies on child marriage in Iran, means there is little information and data, but according to the legal adviser of the Iranian Judiciary, the official and state statistics suggest that between 500 to 600 thousand children per year Iran are getting married – and these are only the statistics for marriages that officially registered, without including those outside the formal marriage process. Now, there are around 14,000 child widows in the country, and according to estimates from the United Nations 17 percent of all marriages in Iran are under the age of 18. Further, some men who have more than one spouse in Iran do not register their child marriages, and hide them. This comprehensive research first attempts to analyse the prevalence of child marriage in Iran with an emphasis on socio-cultural factors that reflect the profound and deep-rooted inequalities which have contributed to the persistence of child marriage in Iran. The scientific reason for doing this research is to explain the evidence and prevalence of this traumatic practice in Iran and to assist government decision makers in focusing on the immediate protection of these children’s human rights. This book, as an effort to expose and deepen understandings of the issue of child marriage in Iran, has attracted the attention of civil activists, government policymakers and some parliamentary representatives and MPs. It has provided the background to proposals for raising the minimum age for child marriage, amending Article 1041 of the Civil Code. This proposal was approved by the House of Representatives in an emergency and with a majority of votes, but unanimously rejected by the Majlis Legal and Judicial Commission. As the only fieldwork study these research findings were predicated on producing civil society advocacy and the need for parliament to amend the law. Mary Hegland arrived in this then-small agricultural village of several thousand people in the summer of 1978, unaware of the momentous changes that would sweep this town and this country in the months ahead. She became the only American researcher to witness the Islamic Revolution firsthand over her eighteen-month stay. Days of Revolution offers an insider's view of how regular people were drawn into, experienced, and influenced the 1979 Revolution and its aftermath. Modernisation, usually in the Western model, has often brought major improvements in agricultural technology, education and public health but has also had the effect of weakening the traditional rural economy of many villages and encouraging their growing dependence on external sources of income, most notably oil remittances. This collection of research on the Middle Eastern village looks at the impact on rural life and environment of such factors as the mass exodus of labour to urban centres, emigration, immigration, environmental change and the changing role of women in rural communities – particularly the wives of migrant workers who have to fill a new role in the family structure. State-sponsored agrarian policies have weakened the power of traditional landed interests and together with labour migration have provoked new tension and inequalities in rural society. The book makes clear that the pattern of change has been highly uneven and has served to heterogenise the countryside. As the oil states enter a period of recession and the likelihood of substantial return migration increases, rural communities will need to make further major adjustments and the book examines the tensions this new development is likely to produce.
