Book excerpt: Resonance production in two-photon interactions is studied using data collected with the ASP detector at the PEP ee/sup -/ storage ring located at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The ASP detector is a non-magnetic lead-glass calorimeter constructed from 632 lead-glass bars. It covers 94% of 4.pi. in solid angle, extending to within 20° of the beamline. Lead-scintillator calorimeters extend the coverage to within 21 mr of the beamline on both sides. Energy resolution of .sqrt. E/10%, where E is the energy is GeV, is achieved for electrons and photons in the lead-glass calorimeter, and particle trajectories are reconstructed with high efficiency. A total luminosity of 108 pb/sup -1/ was collected with the ASP detector at a center-of-mass energy of 29 GeV. The observed process is e/sup +/e/sup -/ .-->. e/sup +/e/sup -/.gamma.*.gamma.* .-->. e/sup +/e/sup -/X, is a pseudoscalar resonance (J/sup PC/ = 0/sup /minus/+/) and .gamma.* is a virtual (mass /ne/ 0) photon. The outgoing electrons scatter down the beampipe and are not detected. The observed resonances are the /eta/ and /eta/' mesons, with masses of 549 and 958 MeV, respectively. They are detected in the .gamma gamma. decay mode; a total of 2380 +- 49 /eta/ .-->. .gamma gamma. and 568 +- 26 /eta/' .-->. .gamma gamma. events are observed. From the number of events, the detection efficiency, and the calculated production cross sections the radiative widths, GAMMA/sub .gamma gamma./, of the /eta/ and /eta/' were measured and found to be: GAMMA/sub .gamma gamma./(/eta/) = .481 +- 010 +- 047keV and GAMMA/sub .gamma gamma./(/eta/') = 4.71 +- 22 +- 70keV. These results are in good agreement with the world average values. 67 refs., 42 figs., 20 tabs.

Book excerpt: Exclusive hadron production processes in photon-photon collisions provide important tests of QCD at the amplitude level, particularly as measures of hadron distribution amplitudes and skewed parton distributions. The determination of the shape and normalization of the distribution amplitudes has become particularly important in view of their importance in the analysis of exclusive semi-leptonic and two-body hadronic B-decays. Interesting two-photon physics, including doubly-tagged [gamma]*[gamma]* reactions, will be accessible at low energy, high luminosity ee− colliders, including measurements of channels important in the light-by-light contribution to the muon g-2 and the study of the transition between threshold production controlled by low-energy effective chiral theories and the domain where leading-twist perturbative QCD becomes applicable. The threshold regime of hadron production in photon-photon and ee− annihilation, where hadrons are formed at small relative velocity, is particularly interesting as a test of low energy theorems, soliton models, and new types of resonance production. Such studies will be particularly valuable in double-tagged reactions where polarization correlations, as well as the photon virtuality dependence, can be studied.

A search has been made for production of the E(1420) by?{gamma} collisions, but no signal is observed.

Book excerpt: Two-photon physics, i.e. photon-photon collisions in electron-positron colliders, a relatively new field in elementary particle physics, has become very popular in the last 20 years. Many experiments have been performed in this field, and the theoretical implications (in particular in quantum chromodynamics) have been studied in much detail. Nine international workshops devoted to two-photon physics have taken place between 1973 and 1992.This meeting was particularly timely, since a new generation of electron-positron colliders is presently being built or planned. These colliders will involve a large spectrum of beam energies, but their common characteristics should be a high particle flux (luminosity). This should allow for measuring many new phenomena as well as for studying known processes with much higher precision than before. Particularly promising is the prospect of building a dedicated high-energy photon collider; this should become possible using a laser technique allowing for the “conversion” of a linear electron beam into a photon beam.Over 60 physicists (both experimentalists and theorists), mainly from European countries (France, Britain, Italy, Germany, Russia, as well as Sweden and Switzerland), discussed these new possibilities at the above meeting. Over 30 talks were presented and many extended debates took place.

Book excerpt: The subject of production of resonances via two photons in ee- colliding beams has finally come into its own. In particular, the eta meson is already changing from this year's sensation to next year's normalization. As for the other old physics mesons with even charge conjugation it seems likely that measurements of the scalar and tensor mesons coupling to two photons are quite doable and will be forthcoming. These will yield some interesting information on the quark content of these states and/or the dynamics of their two photon decays. As for the charmonium states, a measurement of some of the two photon decay widths would be quite interesting in terms of the information it gives on the dynamics of this system. However, even at LEP energies the cross sections for production of any particular state are rather small and one must be lucky to have a detectable decay mode or modes with substantial branching fraction. Finally, there is the .pi.° which started the whole subject. A measurement of this coupling is much easier using the complementary technique for determining two photon widths-the Primakoff effect. GAMMA(.pi.° .-->. .gamma gamma.) has long since been measured with high accuracy in this way.

Book excerpt: A study of electron-positron scattering leading to two electron-positron pairs via a two-photon interaction has been carried out at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC). The case where one pair is observed in the detector was investigated. These events were produced at the SLAC Linear Collider (SLC) operating in the center-of-mass energy range from 89.2 to 9.30 GeV. The data was collected using the Mark II detector. Two-photon interactions are described by the theory of quantum electrodynamics (QED). Such processes can be a significant background to new particle searches; consequently, and understanding of their production is imperative. A deviation from the event rate predicted by QED might indicate the existence of new particles. The event rate may also be useful as a luminosity monitor during data collection. The data sample from the Mark II is searched for events which have features indicative of two-photon events. For comparison with theory, the Berends, Daverveldt, and Keiss Monte Carlo event generator is used to simulate events according to QED theory. The data is compared to the theoretical predictions. Given the low event statistics from the SLC data run, the results are consistent with the QED theoretical prediction. However, due to the low statistics, this measurement cannot be used to indicate non-deviation from QED predictions.
