Download or read book EPR of Free Radicals in Solids II written by Anders Lund and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-09 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: EPR of Free Radicals in Solids: Trends in Methods and Applications, 2nd ed. presents a critical two volume review of the methods and applications of EPR (ESR) for the study of free radical processes in solids. Emphasis is on the progress made in the developments in EPR technology, in the application of sophisticated matrix isolation techniques and in the advancement in quantitative EPR that have occurred since the 1st edition was published. Improvements have been made also at theoretical level, with the development of methods based on first principles and their application to the calculation of magnetic properties as well as in spectral simulations. EPR of Free Radicals in Solids II focuses on the trends in applications of experimental and theoretical methods to extract structural and dynamical properties of radicals and spin probes in solid matrices by continuous wave (CW) and pulsed techniques in nine chapters written by experts in the field. It examines the studies involving radiation- and photo-induced inorganic and organic radicals in inert matrices, the high-spin molecules and metal-based molecular clusters as well as the radical pro-cesses in photosynthesis. Recent advancements in environmental applications in-cluding measurements by myon resonance of radicals on surfaces and by quantitative EPR in dosimetry are outlined and the applications of optical detection in material research with much increased sensitivity reviewed. The potential use of EPR in quantum computing is considered in a newly written chapter. This new edition is aimed to experimentalists and theoreticians in research involving free radicals, as well as for students of advanced courses in physical chemis-try, chemical physics, materials science, biophysics, biochemistry and related fields.

This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discovery of new free radicals, largely in irradiated single crystals of nonmetallic solids, and the determination of the molecular and electronic structures of these paramagnetic species by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy, have been carried out using a wide variety of organic and inorganic materials. The mechanisms of production of radicals in solids, their motions, and their reactions have been investigated and some applicable general principles deduced. Emphasis has been on aliphatic free radicals from irradiated carboxylic acids and amides and their halogen-substituted derivatives, organometallic radicals and substituted cyclic hydrocarbon radicals; inorganic radicals studied include V centers, hypervalent radicals and electron adducts. Extensive investigations of paramagnetic transition metal complexes, particularly cyanides and fluorides, have been made. In all cases quantum mechanical calculations have been employed as far as possible in interpreting the data. An improved method for analyzing experimental ESR spectra of single crystals has been developed and a number of crystal structures have been determined to supplement the ESR studies. Applications of nuclear quadrupole resonance spectroscopy to the study of structure and bonding in inorganic solids have been made and a method for using nuclear magnetic relaxation data for estimating quadrupole coupling constants in liquids has been developed.

Download or read book EPR of Free Radicals in Solids written by Anders Lund and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 649 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: EPR of Free Radicals in Solids: Trends in Methods and Applications presents methods and applications of modern EPR for the study of free radical processes in solids, which so far are only available in the journal literature. The first part of the book, covering trends in methods, contains experimentally oriented chapters on continuous wave and pulsed EPR techniques and special methods involving muon magnetic resonance and optical detection and theory for dynamic studies. New simulation schemes, including the influence of dynamics, are presented as well as advances in the calculation of hyperfine and electronic g-tensors. The second part of the book presents applications involving studies of radiation and photo-induced inorganic and organic radicals in inert matrices, including novel results of quantum effects in small radicals. High-spin molecules and complexes are also considered as well as radical processes in photosynthesis. Recent advances in EPR dosimetry are summarized.

Download or read book Electron Spin Resonance Studies of Radiation Effects. Progress Report for Period January 1, 1976--December 31, 1976. [Gamma and X Radiation]. written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of .gamma. radiation and X-rays on organic and inorganic solids were studied by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. Paramagnetic species produced by radiation damage and identified by their ESR spectra include organic and inorganic free radicals, transition metal ions and V centers. Information concerning the stabilities of these species in the solid state, and their reactions and conformational changes with temperature, was obtained. The structures and conformational changes of alicyclic radicals trapped in an adamantane matrix were studied and the effects of substituents on the barriers to ring inversion in some five- and six-membered rings were evaluated. The possible use of hexamethylenetetramine instead of adamantane as a solid-state matrix for the ESR investigation of free radicals was studied. The geometric and electronic structures of bromo- and iodo-radicals were established and the nuclear hyperfine interactions characteristic of these species determined. An experimental and theoretical investigation of tunneling motions in the methyl radical was completed. ESR studies of radiation damage in transition metal cyanides and fluorides were made. New complexes of iron, nickel and cobalt were obtained in which the metals have unusual valence states; hyperfine interactions with metal and ligand were used to establish the structures of these species. While irradiated oxyfluoride complexes appear to preferentially gain or lose an electron on irradiation, it was shown that most fluoro complexes give rise to the V center F2− as one of the radiation products.
