Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive, up-to-date review of technologies for cleaning up contaminants in groundwater and soil. It provides a special focus on three classes of contaminants that have proven very difficult to treat once released to the subsurface: metals, radionuclides, and dense nonaqueous-phase liquids such as chlorinated solvents. Groundwater and Soil Cleanup was commissioned by the Department of Energy (DOE) as part of its program to clean up contamination in the nuclear weapons production complex. In addition to a review of remediation technologies, the book describes new trends in regulation of contaminated sites and assesses DOE's program for developing new subsurface cleanup technologies.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to help engineers and scientists better understand dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) contamination of groundwater and the methods and technology used for characterization and remediation. Remediation of DNAPL source zones is very difficult and controversial and must be based on state-of-the-art knowledge of the behavior (transport and fate) of nonaqueous phase liquids in the subsurface and site specific geology, chemistry and hydrology. This volume is focused on the characterization and remediation of nonaqueous phase chlorinated solvents and it is hoped that mid-level engineers and scientists will find this book helpful in understanding the current state-of-practice of DNAPL source zone management and remediation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At hundreds of thousands of commercial, industrial, and military sites across the country, subsurface materials including groundwater are contaminated with chemical waste. The last decade has seen growing interest in using aggressive source remediation technologies to remove contaminants from the subsurface, but there is limited understanding of (1) the effectiveness of these technologies and (2) the overall effect of mass removal on groundwater quality. This report reviews the suite of technologies available for source remediation and their ability to reach a variety of cleanup goals, from meeting regulatory standards for groundwater to reducing costs. The report proposes elements of a protocol for accomplishing source remediation that should enable project managers to decide whether and how to pursue source remediation at their sites.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The awareness and development of 'biodegradable' surfactants pre-dates current pressures by the environmental movement by nearly three decades, wherein a responsible industry mutually agreed to replace 'hard', non-biodegradable com ponents of household detergents by 'soft', biodegradable alternatives, without course to legislation. The only requirement at that time was for surfactants used in detergents to exhibit a 'primary biodegradability' in excess of 80%; this referring to the disap pearance or removal from solution of the intact surface active material as de tected by specified analytical techniques. This proved useful, as observed environmental impacts of surfactants, e.g. visible foam on rivers, are associated with the intact molecule. Test methods for 'primary biodegradability' were eventually enshrined in EU legislation for nonionic surfactants (Directive 821242/EEC, amended 73/404IEEC) and for anionic surfactants (Directive 8212431EEC, amended 73/405IEEC). No approved test methods and resultant legislation have been developed for cationic and amphoteric surfactants to date. The environmental classification of chemical substances, which of course includes surfactants, and associated risk assessment utilises a second criterion 'ready biodegradability'. This may be assessed by a number of methods which monitor oxygen uptake (BOD), carbon dioxide production or removal of dis solved organic carbon (DOC). Some surfactants which comply with the above Detergents Directive are borderline when it comes to 'ready biodegradability'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The remediation of non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) using conventional aquifer treatment technologies is limited by the low solubility of NAPLs. Surfactants can promote the enhanced removal of NAPL through mobilisation, a mechanism that relies on the reduction of interfacial tension (IFT) at the flushing solution/NAPL interface. The conditions governing mobilisation can be represented by the total trapping number (N T), a dimensionless quantity relating viscous and buoyancy forces to the capillary forces trapping the NAPL residual. A highly reliable experimental apparatus and procedure were developed to study the effect of flow rate and surfactant concentration on the removal of a residual NAPL. Column studies were conducted to investigate the relative flushing efficiencies of very dilute Triton X-100 solutions delivered through Ottawa sand spiked with light white mineral oil. At the higher flow rate, the surfactant solutions yielded N T values greater than the critical N T, promoting greater NAPL recovery as IFT dropped. While NAPL removal at the lower flow rate should not be enhanced because the critical N T was not surpassed, variations in mineral oil recovery during flushing clearly indicate a surfactant effect. At the lower flow rate, the surfactant-induced enhancement and retardation of NAPI, removal both highlight the limitations of the N T approach. For more realistic systems where free product NAPL is present, the total trapping number approach requires further study to define its applicability as an indicator for NAPL mobilisation.

Book excerpt: The transport and dissolution of residual non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPLS) trapped in water saturated porous media is a problem pertinent to both environmental and petrochemical industries. In this work we have quantitatively examined the complete dissolution of residual entrapped NAPL at the pore-scale in three dimensions using refractive index matching techniques along with planar laser induced fluorescence. The results yielded pore-scale information regarding ganglia volume, surface area, and position over time at various Capillary numbers. We found that with increasing Capillary numbers, the time for total dissolution decreased. In addition, it appears that large ganglia exhibit fractal area to volume scaling. We were also able to examine the distributions of the ganglia in the direction of flow over time. The use of low-frequency flow pulsations as a removal technique was also examined. A two dimensional micro model was used for these studies. We found that for this system, lower frequencies and higher amplitudes were more effective in NAPL removal due to breakup and mobilization. We also examined the effect of increasing amplitude and continuous versus pulsed stimulation. In addition, mass transport in the presence of a surfactant was also enhanced due to flow pulsation with lower frequencies and higher amplitudes again being most effective.
