This book was released on 1977 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul A. Gaeng's exhaustive morpho-syntactic analysis of Latin nominal declensions, as found in Christian funerary inscriptions from the Roman Empire, seeks to establish the extent to which this inscribed material reflects the period's linguistic evolution: from classical Latin's multi-case structure to the one-case system of Western Romance Languages. The study draws on E. Diehl's three-volume Inscriptiones Latinae Veteres and J. D. Vives's Inscripciones cristianas de las Espanas romana y visigoda for its heterogeneous dataset. Gaeng's work forms a valuable contribution to the study of the dissolution of the Latin declensional system in the shift from Latin to Romance.

Book Synopsis Bilingualism and the Latin Language by : James Noel Adams
Download or read book Bilingualism and the Latin Language written by James Noel Adams and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-01-09 with total page 876 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1980s, bilingualism has become one of the main themes of sociolinguistics - but there are as yet few large-scale treatments of the subject specific to the ancient world. This book is the first work to deal systematically with bilingualism during a period of antiquity (the Roman period, down to about the fourth century AD) in the light of sociolinguistic discussions of bilingual issues. The general theme of the work is the nature of the contact between Latin and numerous other languages spoken in the Roman world. Among the many issues discussed three are prominent: code-switching (the practice of switching between two languages in the course of a single utterance) and its motivation, language contact as a cause of change in one or both of the languages in contact, and the part played by language choice and language switching in the establishment of personal and group identities.
Download or read book Vulgar Latin written by Jozsef Herman and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vulgar Latin refers to those features of Latin language that were not recommended by the classical grammarians but existed nonetheless. Although Vulgar Latin is not well documented, evidence can be deduced from details of the spelling, grammar, and vocabulary that occur in texts of the later Roman Empire, late antiquity, and the early Middle Ages. Every aspect of Vulgar Latin is exemplified in this book, proving that the language is not separate in itself, but an integral part of Latin.Originally published in French in 1967, Vulgar Latin was translated more recently into Spanish in an expanded and revised version. The English translation by Roger Wright accurately portrays Vulgar Latin as a complicated field of study, where little is known with absolute certainty, but a great deal can be worked out with considerable probability through careful critical analysis of the data. This text is an invaluable aid to research and understanding for all those interested in Latin, Romance languages, historical linguistics, early medieval texts, and early medieval history.József Herman is the former director of the Linguistic Research Institute at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and is currently Professor of Latin Linguistics at the University of Venice. He is a well-known authority on the history of later Latin and the prehistory of Romance languages
Book Synopsis Historical Dialectology by : Jacek Fisiak
Download or read book Historical Dialectology written by Jacek Fisiak and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume of 29 papers, readers interested in language variation and historical linguistics will find interesting theoretical proposals as well as suggestions concerning ways of approaching previously unsolved empirical problems in the field. The papers deal with various aspects of historical regional dialectology, and some border on the issue of dialectology and linguistic change. Although many deal with English, a number discuss Romance languages in general as well as Norwegian, German, relic languages of the eastern Alpine region, Coptic, and Fox. Some are devoted to more general issues. The language specific contributions also often cover areas of a more general nature. The results indicate new vistas for further productive research in the area of historical dialectology.

Book Synopsis The Broken Angel by : Ursula Franklin
Download or read book The Broken Angel written by Ursula Franklin and published by Unc Department of Romance Studies. This book was released on 1984 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Broken Angel is the first book-length examination of a mythopoetic configuration that pervades Valery's entire textual universe. The Angel is linked to almost every one of its themes and informs all of its modes, which, in turn, form and deform it. In delineating the textual traces of these transformations and the construction and destruction of the symbolic figure inherited from tradition, Franklin links its defigurations to Valery's method of composition: the weaving of anterior segments into texts, many of which remain open-ended and fragmentary. She shows how the broken form of Valery's texts on the Angel is conditioned by the very tensions inherent in the theme. These tensions are disclosed by a reading that also reveals the existential situation and psychological predispositions of an Ego scriptor whose Broken Angel emerges from broken texts.
Book Synopsis Reshaping of the Nominal Inflection in Early Northern West Germanic by : Elżbieta Adamczyk
Download or read book Reshaping of the Nominal Inflection in Early Northern West Germanic written by Elżbieta Adamczyk and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2018-04-20 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a comprehensive corpus study of analogical developments in the nominal morphology of four Northern West Germanic languages: Old English, Old Frisian, Old Saxon and Old Low Franconian. It examines the patterns of reorganisation of the nominal paradigms, focusing on the analogical interdeclensional shifts of nouns affiliated with historical minor classes. The wide scope and comparative nature of the study facilitate identifying the major patterns of inflectional restructuring, both language-specific and those of a more general character, demonstrating that the process was far from random. By framing the investigated phenomena quantitatively, the study affords insight into the dynamics of the changes, their scope in individual languages, the mechanisms underlying the restructuring process and the factors conditioning it. The book may be of interest to both historical linguists who may appreciate its descriptive aspects as well as morphologists concerned with the mechanisms of morphological processes, especially analogy.
