The proposed method has a sound theoretical basis and is expressed in a unified form applicable to all structural members, as well as their connections. It is applied in practice through the use of simple failure criteria derived from first principles without the need for calibration through the use of experimental data. The method is capable of predicting not only load-carrying capacity but also the locations and modes of failure, as well as safeguarding the structural performance code requirements. In this book, the concepts underlying the method are first presented for the case of simply supported RC beams. The application of the method is progressively extended so as to cover all common structural elements. For each structural element considered, evidence of the validity of the proposed method is presented together with design examples and comparisons with current code specifications. The method has been found to produce design solutions which satisfy the seismic performance requirements of current codes in all cases investigated to date, including structural members such as beams, columns, and walls, beam-to-beam or column-to-column connections, and beam-to-column joints.

Book excerpt: In reinforced concrete (RC) structures, wide RC beams are used as primary structural members to support floor loads and to transfer forces from the floor to the vertical elements which are below them, e.g. columns and walls. In these cases, wide concrete beams may be loaded and supported by wide columns or walls (full-width loads and supports) and/or by narrow columns (partial-width loads and supports). In both cases of support and load conditions, the one-way (beam) and two-way (punching) shear capacities should be checked for wide RC members. For both wide and narrow load/support configurations, the provisions of current design Codes require that one-way shear capacity is assessed for a cross-section involving the full width of the beam, and the contribution of shear strength resisted by stirrups is assessed according to the longitudinal stirrup-legs spacing where the transverse stirrup-legs spacing is neglected. Moreover, the current design Codes neglect the load and support widths to predict the flexural strength. The main concern is whether the requirements of current design Codes may lead to poor predictions of flexural and shear strengths of wide concrete beams, especially for narrow-supported wide beams, because they ignore the support width, load width, longitudinal and transverse spacing of stirrup-legs. The objective of this study is to develop new Prediction, Detailing and Design Models for wide reinforced concrete beams to be used in Practice. The results of 26 tests on wide RC beam specimens are reported in this study. The models were developed to account for the missed parameters mentioned above which showed an actual influence on the flexural and shear strengths of wide RC beams with full- and narrow- width loads and supports (wide- and narrow- supported wide RC beams). They take into the consideration the load- and support- widths (or at best, the ratios of load- and support- width to the beam-width). Comprehensive verifications and evaluations of the proposed models were conducted for comparing them with the existing design Codes and other proposed models. It is shown that the proposed models perform the best among the existing Codes and models. It is shown that the flexural and shear strengths decrease as the ratio of the load- and/or support- width to the beam-width decreases, while the shear strength resisted by stirrups contribution decreases as the transverse stirrup legs spacing increases. These influences occur for members with and without shear reinforcement. Based on the proposed design model, the longitudinal and transversal stirrup legs spacing are reduced as the ratio of the load- and/or support- width to the beam-width decreases, and then this will enhance to increase the shear strength; therefore, the failure mode will change from brittle to ductile manner. These influences occur for members with shear-reinforcement. For the members without shear-reinforcement, the proposed detailing approach will enhance the flexural reinforcements (tensile and compressive bars) when they are distributed according to their portions of concentrations within the effective-widths of supports and loads. For wide RC beams with and without shear-reinforcement, test results showed that the shear strength decreased as the support-width and/or load-width was reduced. In addition, for wide RC beams with shear-reinforcement, tests results showed that the shear strength decreased as the longitudinal or transverse spacing of stirrup-legs increased. The tests results also showed that the flexural strength of wide RC beams with stirrups decreased as the support-width and/or load-width was reduced. The behavior of reinforced concrete deep beams is complex. Nonlinear distribution of strain and stress must be considered. Prior to 1999, ACI 318 Codes included an empirical design equation for reinforced concrete deep beams. Since 2002, the strut and tie model and nonlinear analysis have been required. However, both methods have disadvantages of complexity or lack of transparency. The objective of this study is to produce a simple, reliable design equation for reinforced concrete deep beams. A nonlinear finite element program, ATENA, was used for analyzing and predicting the behavior of concrete and reinforced concrete structures. First, applicability of ATENA was verified by developing the computer models of simply supported and two span continuous deep beams based on Birrcher's tests of simply supported deep beams. Tests by Rogowsky and Macgregor and by Ashour are the basis for the models of continuous two span deep beams. Those tests were selected because the researchers reported adequate details of the experimental program and on specimen behavior. Then a series of simply supported and two span continuous deep beam models were developed based on the details and geometry of Birrcher's beams. The computer models were used to investigate the following parameters: the compressive strength of concrete, shear span to depth ratios, longitudinal reinforcement ratios, web reinforcement, effect of member depth, and loading conditions. Finally, a proposed design equation for shear strength of reinforced concrete deep beams was derived based on the observed the behavior of reinforced concrete deep beam tests, the results of the analytical study, and a plastic truss model. The proposed equations were in good agreement with test values and provide an alternate approach to current design procedures for deep beams.

Book excerpt: The modelling of glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) reinforced, concrete beams was conducted by the author in the finite element analysis software ABAQUS. The study extended upon the work done by Joseph Stoner (2015) to calibrate the Concrete Damaged Plasticity (CDP) model, with the intent to ultimately complement laboratory testing in a research setting. Furthermore, current strength prediction methods for beams reinforced with fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) were evaluated against a database of tested beams collected from literature. The validity of the proposed ABAQUS models was assessed against selected beams from the database. Finally, a parametric study was conducted on 12 GFRP reinforced beams, over 12 slenderness ratios, to study the effects of slenderness. The database of tested beams consisted of beams that failed in shear, as tests on slender beams reinforced with FRP are scarce. The strength prediction models were therefore evaluated on their ability to predict shear capacity. The models included in the analysis are the CSA S806-12, the ACI440.1R-15, the Japan Society of Civil Engineers (JSCE), and the Intelligent Sensing for Innovative Structures (ISIS) Canada Manual No. 3 shear models, as well as a prediction model proposed by Nehdi et al. (2007). The study concluded that Nehdi model most accurately predicts the shear capacity for beams with transverse reinforcement, with the remainder of the models providing very conservative values. For beams without shear reinforcement, all models provided good estimates for the shear capacity, with the CSA S806-12 model matching most closely to experimental data. The ABAQUS models proposed by Stoner were evaluated against a series of 8 beams taken from literature: two beams without shear reinforcement, and six with shear reinforcement. The results validated the recommendations made by Stoner, and verified the use of 30° dilation concrete to model beams without stirrups, and 50° dilation concrete to model beams with stirrups. Further research was deemed necessary to accurately model beams that exhibited both flexural crushing and stirrup rupture. The results of the parametric study suggested that the beams without shear reinforcement required large shear span to depth ratios to fail in flexure, exceeding ratios of 15. The beams with shear reinforcement failed in flexure at slenderness ratios approaching 10, demonstrating the increased shear strength provided by the stirrups. The increase in slenderness ratio required to fail in flexure (compared to steel reinforced beams) is attributed to the larger tensile strength of GFRP bars. Furthermore, an investigation into the shear capacity prediction methods of CSA S806-12 yielded that the model under-predicts the stirrup contribution to shear capacity. Further investigation determined the most likely cause was the modelling of the confinement induced by the stirrups.

Shear is one of a few areas of research into fundamentals of the behaviour of concrete structures where contention remains amongst researchers. There is a continuing debate between researchers from a structures perspective and those from a materials or fracture mechanics perspective about the mechanisms that enable the force flow through a concrete member and across cracks. In 2009, a Working Group was formed within fib Task Group 4.2 "Ultimate Limit State Models" to harmonise different ideas about design procedures for shear and punching. An important outcome of this work was the ensuing discussions between experts and practitioners regarding the shear and punching provisions of the draft fib Model Code, which led to the organization of the Salò workshop. Invited experts in the field of shear and FRC gave 18 lectures at the workshop that was attended by 72 participants from 12 countries in 3 different continents. The contributions from this conference as compiled in this bulletin are believed to represent the best of the current state of knowledge. They certainly are of general interest to fib members and especially helpful in the finalization of the 2010 fibModel Code. It is hoped that this publication will stimulate further research in the field, to refine and harmonize the available analytical models and tools for shear and punching design.
