Book excerpt: Using a pre-post experimental design this study explored changes in the three core dimensions of burnout; emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment, among mental health professionals (N=13) across three art making conditions: collage, mandala, and directive drawing. The Maslach Burnout Inventory (Hastings, Horne & Mitchell, 2004) Human Services Survey version of the instrument was used. The resuts show that all three art making conditions effectively decreased burnout and that the mandala intervention was the most effective of the three. Further research in the effectiveness of mandala art making for burnout reduction with mental health professionals' long term could contribute to art therapy research.

The beneficial impact of the arts could be furthered through acknowledging and acting on the growing evidence base; promoting arts engagement at the individual, local and national levels; and supporting cross-sectoral collaboration.
