Book excerpt: `Clay-with-flints' refers to deposits lying on the hilltops and plateaux of the Chalk Downlands of southern England. This study is based on the archaeology, geology and sedimentology of these deposits and forms a comprehensive review of the Palaeolithic stone tools found embedded within them. Evidence relating to the author's excavations at the Lower Palaeolithic site of Wood Hill in East Kent (1993-1994) provides the foundation for her discussion of these clay-with-flint deposits and the earliest occupation of southern England. Since this work presents much new information, two explanatory sections outline the theoretical analysis of the deposits and the processes of their function as well as the methodology for studying and identifying in-situ Palaeolithic material.

Book Synopsis The Lower Palaeolithic Occupation of Britain: Text by : John Wymer
Download or read book The Lower Palaeolithic Occupation of Britain: Text written by John Wymer and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been no satisfactory account of the British Lower Palaeolithic for the last 20 years, despite huge changes in our understanding of our earliest ancestors. This is a comprehensive review of the sites yielding evidence of the Lower Paleolithic in Britain. Most of the finds come from alluvial deposits in river valleys, and maps and sections illustrating the sequence of these deposits form an important part of the book, providing the framework for a chronological separation of the finds. The sites are reviewed in the context of their landscapes: river valleys, seaside, lakeside, downs and hillsides, caves and rock shelters, and in three broad chronological phases. This huge, two-volume publication, accompanied by maps and a gazetteer, is the culmination of an English Heritage Research Programme.

Book Synopsis Archaeological Research Agenda for the Avebury World Heritage Site by :
Download or read book Archaeological Research Agenda for the Avebury World Heritage Site written by and published by Wessex Archaeology. This book was released on 2001 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Avebury is one of the few places in southern Britain to have acted as a focus for ceremonial and ritual activity during the Neolithic and early Bronze Age. The rich collection of archaeological sites, some visible and some buried, exerted physical and cultural influence on the landscape and environment for millennia. This volume forms the first formal research agenda for a World Heritage Site and is the result of several years' work by leading specialists. An introductory discussion of the specific research requirements of such an extraordinary site is followed by a Resource Assessment, a Research Agenda and a study of Research Strategies. These sections are arranged chronologically and cover the Palaeolithic through to the Saxon and medieval periods. The final section examines the methods and techniques used to gather data. These include geophysical survey, fieldwalking, aerial survey, evaluation and excavation, GIS survey and metal detecting. Contributors include Andrew J Lawson, Rosemary M J Cleal, Bryn Walters, Andrew Reynolds, Chris Gingell, Mark Corney, Gill Swanton, Peter Fowler, Michael J Allen, Mark Bowden and Nick Burton.
Book Synopsis The Lower and Middle Palaeolithic Periods in Britain by : Derek A. Roe
Download or read book The Lower and Middle Palaeolithic Periods in Britain written by Derek A. Roe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-30 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the earliest period of human settlement in Britain, proposing a series of archaeological stages for the Lower and Middle Palaeolithic periods. An introduction on the problems and methods of studying the Palaeolithic and Pleistocene periods leads into the technical argument, a sequence of development derived from evidence of stone artefacts and other signs of human activity at stratified sites in south-east England. Materials from all occupied parts of Britain are related to this basic sequence and, stressing that Britain lay on the edge of the Palaeolithic world, the author also brings in essential evidence from Europe and farther afield. The final chapter suggests the probable way of life of human groups in this period. This broad survey synthesises material from widely scattered sources including museums from all over Britain and has an extensive bibliography. Originally published in 1981.
Book Synopsis The Avebury Landscape by : Graham Brown
Download or read book The Avebury Landscape written by Graham Brown and published by Oxbow Books Limited. This book was released on 2005 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is over one hundred years since the publication of the wide ranging archaeological field investigation undertaken on the Marlborough Downs by the Rev A C Smith. His work Guide to the British and Roman Antiquities of the North Wiltshire Downs in a Hundred Square Miles round Abury was originally published in two volumes in 1884 by the Marlborough College Natural History Society, then reprinted and bound into a single volume and published in 1885 by the Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Society after half the original print run was destroyed in a fire. As in most works of inventory the volume has certainly stood the test of time and is still one of the basic reference texts for students of the area. Since then, apart from a few notable exceptions, archaeological literature about the area has been largely site-based and there has been little concerning the Marlborough Downs as a whole. In order to try and redress this imbalance, a day conference was organised in April 2002 at the University of Bath, Swindon, where it was possible to acknowledge and mark the ongoing validity of Smith's work and where a number of papers on various aspects of recent research on the Marlborough Downs were presented. The results of the conference are presented in this volume, together with a number of other commissioned contributions from individuals who have undertaken research in the area during the last decade or so. Each essay stands alone, but they are connected by a common theme, that of the land and how it has changed over millennia.
