Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distributed power generation is a technology that could help to enable efficient, renewable energy production both in the developed and developing world. It includes all use of small electric power generators, whether located on the utility system, at the site of a utility customer, or at an isolated site not connected to the power grid. Induction generator (IG) is the most commonly used and cheapest technology, compatible with renewable energy resources. Permanent magnet (PM) generators have traditionally been avoided due to high fabrication costs; however, compared with IGs they are more reliable and productive. Distributed Generation thoroughly examines the principles, possibilities and limitations of creating energy with both IGs and PM generators. It takes an electrical engineering approach in the analysis and testing of these generators, and includes diagrams and extensive case study examples to better demonstrate how the integration of energy sources can be accomplished. The book also provides the practical tools needed to model and implement new techniques for generating energy through isolated or grid-connected systems. Besides a chapter introducing the technical, economic and environmental impacts of distributed generation, this book includes: an examination of various phase-balancing schemes for a three-phase IG operating on a single-phase power system; a coupled circuit 2-D finite element analysis of a grid-connected IG, with Steinmetz connection; a study of self-excited induction generator (SEIG) schemes for autonomous power systems, and the voltage and frequency control of SEIG with a slip-ring machine (SESRIG); a report on a PM synchronous generator with inset rotor for achieving a reduced voltage regulation when supplying an autonomous power system, and an analysis of its performance using a two-axis model and finite element method; experimental work on various IG and SEIG schemes. This book is a must-read for engineers, consultants, regulators, and environmentalists involved in energy production and delivery, helping them to evaluate renewable energy sources and to integrate these into an efficient energy delivery system. It is also a superior reference for undergraduates and postgraduates. Designers, operators, and planners will appreciate its unique contribution to the literature in this field.

Book excerpt: Wind power is the fastest growing renewable energy and is promising as the number one source of clean energy in the near future. Among various generators used to convert wind energy, the induction generator has attracted more attention due to its lower cost, lower requirement of maintenance, variable speed, higher energy capture efficiency, and improved power quality [1-2]. Generally, there are two types of induction generators widely used in wind power systems - Squirrel-Cage Induction Generator (SCIG) and Doubly-Fed Induction Generator (DFIG). The straightforward power conversion technique using SCIG is widely accepted in fixed-speed applications with less emphasis on the high efficiency and control of power flow. However, such direct connection with grid would allow the speed to vary in a very narrow range and thus limit the wind turbine utilization and power output. Another major problem with SCIG wind system is the source of reactive power; that is, an external reactive power compensator is required to hold distribution line voltage and prevent whole system from overload. On the other hand, the DFIG with variable-speed ability has higher energy capture efficiency and improved power quality, and thus dominates the large-scale power conversion applications. With the advent of power electronics techniques, a back-to-back converter, which consists of two bidirectional converters and a dc-link, acts as an optimal operation tracking interface between DFIG and loads [3-5]. Field orientation control (FOC) is applied to both rotor- and stator-side converters to achieve desirable control on voltage and power [6,7].

Book excerpt: The objective of this research paper is to compare various types of generator used in Wind Energy Conversion system topologies. Now a days there is fast growth of variable speed WECS due to rapid advances in power electronics technologies. In present scenario there are primarily two types of generators used in WECS namely Doubly Fed Induction Generator(DFIG) used for geared operation for variable speeds and fixed speeds and Permanent Magnet Synchronous generator(PMSG) can operate gearless. As there is higher demand of power, offshore installations are gaining popularity and hence new wind turbine designs are being expected in near future, as there will be development in generators and converter design.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis studies the basic concept of doubly-fed induction generators (DFIG) and develops a laboratory model to simulate DFIG wind turbine generators (WTG). 0́−Doubly-fed0́+ refers to the three-phase stator and rotor windings, both of which have electric power exchange with the ac power system. Different from synchronous generators installed in coal, oil, gas, hydro, and nuclear power plants, asynchronous DFIG generators are widely used for wind energy conversion because of the diversity of wind power. Through the control of back-to-back PWM converters connected between the DFIG rotor and power system, a DFIG can operate at variable speed but constant stator frequency. Below rated wind speed, the DFIG controls the torque on the turbine shaft to track the best operating point (i.e. at best tip-speed ratio). Above rated wind speed, the pitch angle of the turbine blades is adjusted to limit the power captured from the wind. DFIG can provide power factor regulation by controlling the reactive power exchange with the grid. In this laboratory DFIG experiment, a DC motor is open-loop controlled as a prime mover with variable mechanical power output. A wound-rotor induction motor is mechanically coupled to the DC motor and operated as a DFIG. An IGBT inverter is connected to a variable DC voltage source in order to provide a controllable three-phase voltage applied to the rotor windings. The reactive power output is controlled by setting the magnitude of the rotor excitation voltage. The active power (torque), reactive power output and speed can be controlled by setting the frequency of the rotor excitation voltage. Through manually adjusting the DC input and rotor excitation voltage, the laboratory DFIG is able to operate at a variable simulated wind speed (4 0́3 25 m/s) with desired power output following the GE 1.5 MW WTG. As an advanced control strategy, decoupled d-q vector control for DFIG using back-to-back converters is studied. Under a stator-flux oriented reference frame, for the rotor-side converter, the rotor d- component (i.e. vrd, ird) controls the stator reactive power (rotor excitation current), while the rotor q- component (i.e. vrq, irq) controls the stator active power (electrical torque); for the supply-side converter, the d- component (i.e. vd, id) controls the DC-link voltage, while the q- component (i.e. vq, iq) controls the reactive power.

Book excerpt: EVALUATION OF OCEAN-ENERGY CONVERSION BASED ON LINEAR GENERATOR CONCEPTS As the world continues to demand greater productivity and lifestyle enrichment through technological advancements, the demand for electrical power is predicted to escalate dramatically. Thus far, this increased demand has been primarily supplied from fossil fueled plants. Unfortunately, the burning of fossil fuels produce harmful carbon dioxide pollution as a by-product. It has been hypothesized that unless a clean, renewable, and efficient alternate source of energy is found soon, the world may either exhaust its supplies of energy-producing materials or drastically degrade its environment. However, motions that occur naturally, such as ocean waves, can play a significant role in generating environmentally safe and economically viable energy for human utilization. The focus of this work predicts the electrical power generation capabilities from a seabed mounted linear generator tethered to a floating buoy heaving under the influence of passing ocean surface waves. Mathematical models are introduced which simulate the oceans' surface conditions under both the regular (basic) and irregular (natural) wave regimes, the heave (vertical displacement) response for a floating buoy, and the resulting electrical output parameters of the linear generator. Within these models, various physical and electrical parameters are altered in an attempt to generate a greater output power for a given sea state condition, making the Wave Energy Converter (WEC) more efficient. It is shown theoretically that the buoy can be designed to have a greater heave response than that of the height of a passing wave resulting in an increase in generated power from the linear generator.
