A wide variation in chemical composition, as well as in physical properties, is found within very Short distances. During a recent investigation in this laboratory upon the determination of humus, the character of the clay in Hawaiian soils, as regards certain of its properties, was found to be radically different from that in mainland soils. Chief among these abnormal properties is the incomplete coagulation when coag ulants are added. This is especially true in case of addition of ammonium carbonate, which has been successfully used on mainland soils for the coagulation of clay in humus extracts. This peculiarity of the clay has led to a study of the composition of the coagulable and noncoagulable grains and a further investiga tion upon the composition of the clay, fine silt, silt, fine sand, and coarse sand separates in the important Hawaiian types of soil differ ing in color, chemical composition, and physical properties. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Humus in California Soils Information and data regarding the nature of the soils of the State have been Obtained through the physical and chemical analyses Of thousands of samples taken according to our directions and sent to our laboratory by farmers throughout California; 'by the examination of samples of a few feet in depth taken by us or other members Of the station staff; and of one hundred soil columns taken to depths of ten or twelve feet from each of the main soil regions of the State, chiefly by the author and his assistant, the late F. E. Johnson. It has been the policy of the California Experiment Station, from the time when Professor Hilgard established it in 1875 to the present time, to respond to the call of farmers for information regarding problems of the farm in all of its branches, and especially those of the soil and its products. The examination of soils has been free to the farmer, and during these years many thousands of samples of soil have been sent to us by them to ascertain whether there be a lack of plant food and a need of fertilizers, whether alkali salts be present and how gotten rid of, or whether there be some other causes of infertility. The samples were for the most part taken according to our directions, and examined as to their physical properties, and as to the approximate amount of humus, lime, and phosphoric acid, and sometimes of potash, short methods for these determinations having been adopted. Where alkali was found to be present in any appreciable amount, the percentage of each salt was determined by a regular analysis. These examinations of soils that came from every part of the State, together with such personal visits as Professor Hilgard and the author were able to make to the main agricultural regions, gave an excellent insight into the agricultural conditions of every part of the State; which has been of very great importance in our work and a special help toward the completion of a soil map of the State, there being no funds available for the prosecution of a soil survey. The concept of bioavailability has recently piqued the interest of the hazardous waste industry as an important consideration in deciding how much waste to clean up. The rationale is that if contaminants in soil and sediment are not bioavailable, then more contaminant mass can be left in place without creating additional risk. A new NRC report notes that the potential for the consideration of bioavailability to influence decision-making is greatest where certain chemical, environmental, and regulatory factors align. The current use of bioavailability in risk assessment and hazardous waste cleanup regulations is demystified, and acceptable tools and models for bioavailability assessment are discussed and ranked according to seven criteria. Finally, the intimate link between bioavailability and bioremediation is explored. The report concludes with suggestions for moving bioavailability forward in the regulatory arena for both soil and sediment cleanup.

Our home's energy budget, our firm's inventory, our nation's debt, and humanity's numbers all have accounts that change at rates that are equal to the inputs minus the outputs. Jenny's "system view" of the soil was carried into the fertile fields of Midwestern American prairies from the laboratories of Switzerland in the late 1920s. Jenny's rate equations provided the other paradigm or world view that, I recall, brought us to the threshold of systems ecology as it later evolved in the second half of the twentieth century. As if world renown in the specialties of pedology and soil chemistry were not enough for one lifetime, excerpts below remind us that Hans Jenny has also been a perceptive outdoor field ecologist since his early Alpine expeditions with Braun Blanquet in the mid 1920s. Jenny's ecosystem studies in the pygmy forest, a further classic example of a soil-plant system "run down" over hundreds of thousands of years since its origin, continue to occupy some of the vigorous retirement time near his farm in Mendocino County. But each specific, quantitative case study, and each research area conserved (with additional hard work) for further study by future generations, fits into Jenny's coherent world view.
