Thus, preventive dentistry is a cross-sectional challenge for all fields in dentistry, and one that has already achieved great success, as shown by the caries decline in many countries. The walls between prevention and treatment have recently fallen in caries and periodontal disease, as well as in orthodontics, where guidance of function and space maintenance are a combination of prevention and treatment. This book discusses new developments and innovations in preventive dentistry, from primary "real" prevention to secondary prevention by inactivating initial lesions, and on to tertiary prevention to avoid subsequent progression and complications of manifest oral disease. This evidence base is then translated into clinical dental practice. The book addresses everyone interested or involved in dentistry, including students, the whole dental practice team, educators, health scientists, and policy makers, who want to gain insight into these up-to-date clinical practices and future developments. It intends to make an impact on teaching and all fields of clinical dentistry – not by giving cookbook recipes, but by pointing out the rationale behind the changes in our routines. Presented by an international group of recognized specialists in their fields, the topics include the new understanding and management of caries and periodontal disease, prevention of orthodontic problems, diagnostic approaches, the role of diet and according recommendations for oral health, routes to better oral hygiene, changes in oral disease patterns and their consequences, non- and minimally invasive caries treatment, current fluoride guidelines including the use of silver fluorides, risk management, a common risk-factor approach, facilitating behavior changes, sealants, and probiotics. This broad spectrum is elucidated for the most relevant dental problems from early childhood to seniors to implement preventively oriented dental practice.

Book excerpt: Provides up-to-date information on the rationale for the use of fluoride in dentistry This volume brings together current concepts relating to the use of fluoride in dentistry. In contributions written by expert authors, data from this large and complex field have been assembled into a clear sequence and presented in a lucid fashion. The first section deals with the sources of fluoride intake and its metabolism, in order to fully understand fluoride toxicity and the importance of monitoring intake. The second section focuses in more detail on modes of fluoride application and the mechanisms by which this ion interacts with the oral environment to cause a remarkable reduction in dental caries. The role of fluoride in the prevention of dental erosion is also elucidated. The complex mechanisms by which fluoride exerts its effects are described with clarity and the entire text is accompanied by particularly useful illustrations. As a clear up-to-date summary of current thinking in the field, this book will be essential reading for research workers and postgraduate students. Established researchers and teachers in both clinical and basic sciences will find it to be a valuable addition to their libraries, and clinicians will be able to better evaluate the current scientific evidence on the advantages as well as the hazards of fluoride in dentistry.

Also referred to as tooth decay, this disease is one of the most common disorders throughout the world, second only to the common cold. Dental caries is the most common chronic childhood disease in the United States and is 5 to 7 times more common than asthma. According to the World Oral Health Report in 2003, dental caries affect 60-80% of school children and a vast majority of adults. Dental caries is a chronic bacterial infection of the hard tissue of the tooth that is characterized by alternating phases of demineralization and remineralization. Dental decay can lead to significant pain and dysfunction that can interfere with basic functions such as eating, sleeping, and speaking. If left untreated, dental caries can result in cavities forming and, eventually, tooth loss. Although the prevalence and severity of dental caries has decreased over the years, this disease can be controlled better with proper fluoride exposure. Fluoride dentifrices have been shown in numerous clinical trials to be effective anticaries agents and have been recognized as a major cause of the remarkable decline in caries prevalence in many developed countries. Dentifrices have been widely adopted around the world as the principle means of delivering topical fluoride and obtaining caries preventive benefits. Although there is documented literature on the use of topical fluorides, the issue needs to be further researched based on the recent documented literature and guidelines regarding use of topical fluorides. Hence, the present review was conducted with the aim to review the available literature on the use and effectiveness of different topical fluorides used in dentistry.

Download or read book The Cost and Effectiveness of School-based Preventive Dental Care written by Stephen P. Klein and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results with 9,566 children who participated for four years in a 10-site, school-based preventive care program indicated that dental health lessons, brushing and flossing, fluoride tablets and mouthrinsing, and professionally applied topical fluorides were not especially effective in reducing a clinically significant amount of dental decay. This was true when the procedures were used singly or in combination. The only study procedure that consistently reduced decay involved applying occlusal sealants to the chewing surfaces of the posterior teeth. Although this measure prevented 23 to 65 percent of all new carious lesions, this amounted to only one to two carious surfaces in four years. Children who were especially susceptible to decay did not benefit appreciably more from any of the preventive measures than did children in general. The direct costs of sealants or prophy/gel treatments were about $23 per child per year (in 1981 dollars). The cost of adding a fluoride mouthrinse program to an existing supervised health education program was about $3.29 per child per year. Communal water fluoridation was reaffirmed as the most cost effective measure for reducing dental decay in children.
