Presently fielded systems like pulsed electromagnetic induction systems and cesium-vapor magnetometers are able to distinguish between UXO and other metallic ground clutter only with difficulty. The discovery of giant magnetoresistance (GMR) has led to the development of a new generation of integrated-circuit magnetic sensors that are far more sensitive than previously available room-temperature-operation electronic devices. The small size of GMR sensors makes possible the construction of array detectors that can be used to image the flux emanating from a ferrous object or from a non-ferrous object with eddy currents imposed by an external coil. The purpose of a GMR-based imaging detector would be to allow the operator to easily distinguish between UXO and benign objects (like shrapnel or spent bullets) that litter formerly used defense sites (FUDS). In order to demonstrate the potential of a GMR-based imaging technology, a crude magnetic imaging system has been constructed using commercially available sensors. The ability to roughly determine the outline and disposition of magnetic objects has been demonstrated. Improvements to the system which are necessary to make it into a high-performance UXO detector are outlined.

Book excerpt: The Chemistry Division of the Naval Research Laboratory has developed the Multi-sensor Towed Array Detection System for use in unexploded ordnance detection and classification. With support from the Environmental Security Technology Certification Program, we are developing a frequency-domain electromagnetic induction sensor array to extend our capabilities. The first task in this program is to characterize the commercial GEM-3 sensor and assess its suitability for use in a towed array. In this report, we detail our characterization results and note the problems we encountered. We conclude by listing the modifications to the baseline sensors that we will make for the array we will field.

Book excerpt: The Standardized UXO Technology Demonstration Sites were established by the Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP) under project MM-0103 to ensure that critical unexploded ordnance (UXO) technology performance parameters such as detection capability, false alarm rates, discrimination, reacquisition, and system efficiency are determined through standardized test methodologies, procedures, and facilities. This project has performed standardized analyses of data collected at the two standardized sites at Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG) in Maryland and Yuma Proving Ground (YPG) in Arizona in order to understand the factors that affect UXO detection and discrimination. We focus on electromagnetic induction (EMI) sensor and total field magnetometer systems. The EMI sensors (EM61 and EM63) excite eddy currents in the target with an electromagnetic pulse (primary field) and measure the induced field associated with the eddy current decay at a range of times after the primary field cutoff. The magnetometers measure distortions of the earth's magnetic field caused by ferromagnetic targets. The standardized sites and the data sets used in the analyses reported here are described in Section 2. The demonstrator data sets analyzed in this project were collected by the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), Tetra Tech Foster Wheeler, Inc. (TtFW), Army Corps of Engineers Engineering Research and Development Center in Vicksburg (ERDC), Shaw Environmental, Inc., and NAEVA Geophysics. The analysis focused primarily on systems using total field magnetometers and systems based on the EM61 MkII time-domain EMI sensor. ERDC used the EM63 sensor. It is similar to the EM61, but measures the EMI response over a greater range of time decay than the EM61. Section 2 also includes brief discussions of the physical principles of the sensors and the interpretation of data collected using the sensors.

Book excerpt: US Defense Department estimates indicate that as many as 11 million acres of government land in the U.S. may contain unexploded ordnance (UXO), with the cost of identifying and disposing of this material estimated at nearly $500 billion. The size and character of the ordnance, types of interference, vegetation, geology, and topography vary from site to site. Because of size or composition, some ordnance is difficult to detect with any geophysical method, even under favorable soil and cultural interference conditions. For some sites, airborne methods may provide the most time and cost effective means for detection of UXO. Airborne methods offer lower risk to field crews from proximity to unstable ordnance, and less disturbance of sites that maybe environmentally sensitive. Data were acquired over a test site at Edwards AFB, CA using airborne magnetic, electromagnetic, multispectral and thermal sensors. Survey areas included sites where trenches might occur, and a test site in which we placed deactivated ordnance, ranging in size from small ''bomblets'' to large bombs. Magnetic data were then acquired with the Aerodat HM-3 system, which consists of three cesium magnetometers within booms extending to the front and sides of the helicopter, and mounted such that the helicopter can be flown within 3m of the surface. Electromagnetic data were acquired with an Aerodat 5 frequency coplanar induction system deployed as a sling load from a helicopter, with a sensor altitude of 15m. Surface data, acquired at selected sites, provide a comparison with airborne data. Multispectral and thermal data were acquired with a Daedelus AADS 1268 system. Preliminary analysis of the test data demonstrate the value of airborne systems for UXO detection and provide insight into improvements that might make the systems even more effective.

Book excerpt: Buried explosive hazards present a pressing problem worldwide. Millions of acres and thousands of sites are contaminated in the United States alone [1, 2]. There are three categories of explosive hazards: metallic, intermediate-electrical conducting (IEC), and non-conducting targets. Metallic target detection and classification by electromagnetic (EM) signature has been the subject of research for many years. Key to the success of this research is modern multi-static Electromagnetic Induction (EMI) sensors, which are able to measure the wideband EMI response from metallic buried targets. However, no hardware solutions exist which can characterize IEC and non-conducting targets. While high-conducting metallic targets exhibit a quadrature peak response for frequencies in a traditional EMI regime under 100 kHz, the response of intermediate-conducting objects manifests at higher frequencies, between 100 kHz and 15 MHz. In addition to high-quality electromagnetic sensor data and robust electromagnetic models, a classification procedure is required to discriminate Targets of Interest (TOI) from clutter. Currently, costly human experts are used for this task. This expense and effort can be spared by using statistical signal processing and machine learning. This thesis has two main parts. In the first part, we explore using the high frequency EMI (HFEMI) band (100 kHz-15 MHz) for detection of carbon fiber UXO, voids, and of materials with characteristics that may be associated with improvised explosive devices (IED). We constructed an HFEMI sensing instrument, and apply the techniques of metal detection to sensing in a band of frequencies which are the transition between the induction and radar bands. In this transition domain, physical considerations and technological issues arise that cannot be solved via the approaches used in either of the bracketing lower and higher frequency ranges. In the second half of this thesis, we present a procedure for automatic classification of UXO. For maximum generality, our algorithm is robust and can handle sparse training examples of multi-class data. This procedure uses an unsupervised starter, semi-supervised techniques to gather training data, and concludes with supervised learning until all TOI are found. Additionally, an inference method for estimating the number of remaining true positives from a partial Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve is presented and applied to live-site dig histories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents the FY95 Pulsed ElectroMagnetic Induction (PEMI) project. This project was a component of the Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) Detection, Identification, and Remediation Advanced Technology Demonstration (ATD) program. Work under the UXO-ATD program began as a result of the new U.S. Government emphasis on Department of Defense reductions and consolidations, the need to close and clean up military bases and ranges, and return them to the public. The PEMI was one of several projects performed under the UXO-ATD program in support of sensor development to increase the reliability, accuracy, and cost effectiveness of the methods used for UXO detection, identification, and characterization. The PEMI project included several phases of work: modelling and simulation, assembling data collection hardware, performing a field experiment in March and April 1995 in Washington state, and performing a second field demonstration at the Naval Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technology Division magnetometer test range in Indian Head, Maryland in July 1995. The results of the project indicate that the PEMI method will be useful in UXO remediation efforts. Additional work is required to develop a field prototype that will be able to detect, localize, charactenze, and identify UXO.

Book excerpt: Remediation of unexploded ordnance (UXO) and prioritization of excavation procedures for archaeological artifacts using electromagnetic (EM) induction are studied in this dissertation. Lowering of the false alarm rates that require excavation and artifact excavation prioritization can reduce the costs associated with unnecessary procedures. Data were taken over 5 areas at the San Jacinto Battleground near Houston, Texas, using an EM-63 metal detection instrument. The areas were selected using the archaeological concepts of cultural and natural formation processes applied to what is thought to be areas that were involved in the 1836 Battle of San Jacinto. Innovative use of a Statistical Point Pattern Analysis (PPA) is employed to identify clustering of EM anomalies. The K-function uses point {x, y} data to look for possible clusters in relation to other points in the data set. The clusters once identified using K-function will be further examined for classification and prioritization using the Weighted K-function. The Weighted K-function uses a third variable such as millivolt values or time decay to aid in segregation and prioritization of anomalies present. Once the anomalies of interest are identified, their locations are determined using the Gi-Statistics Technique. The Gi*-Statistic uses the individual Cartesian{x, y} points as origin locations to establish a range of distances to other cluster points in the data set. The segregation and location of anomalies supplied by this analysis will have several benefits. Prioritization of excavations will narrow down what areas should be excavated first. Anomalies of interest can be located to guide excavation procedures within the areas surveyed. Knowing what anomalies are of greater importance than others will help to lower false alarm rates for UXO remediation or for archaeological artifact selection. Knowing significant anomaly location will reduce the number of excavations which will subsequently save time and money. The procedures and analyses presented here are an interdisciplinary compilation of geophysics, archaeology and statistical analysis brought together for the first time to examine problems associated with UXO remediation as well as archaeological artifact selection at historic battlegrounds using electromagnetic data.

Book excerpt: This report describes a set of field tests conducted at Badlands Bombing Range (BBR) in South Dakota in September 2002. The primary goal of the field tests was to evaluate parameters critical to the design of an airborne electromagnetic system capable of detecting a variety of buried ordnance. The resulting system, called ORAGS-TEM, was patterned after the low-flying helicopter magnetic systems under development at ORNL through separate SERDP/ESTCP programs. Thus, the ORAGS-TEM has a frame mounted, multiple sensor design that permits helicopter surveys at altitudes as low as one meter over UXO-contaminated terrain. As with the magnetic systems, GPS and laser altimetry provide precise positioning to within a few tens of centimeters.
