Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to examine the potential effects of athletic scholarships, gender, and length of time with a scholarship on the types and levels of student athletes' motivations. The study employed self-determination theory, specifically cognitive evaluation theory, as a means to explain and discriminate among motivations. Previous research has provided somewhat conflicting results on the effects of scholarships and gender. There was limited research on the effects of time with scholarships on student athletes' motivations. This study examined differences in student athletes' motivational types and levels to participate in their primary sport. The design of the study was an ex post facto, nonexperimental, survey research design. Four NCAA Division II institutions in the Gulf South Athletic Conference provided the setting for this study. The main analysis included a total of 299 responses. The data were analyzed and the results were presented using nonparametric ANOVAs and post hoc nonparametric t-tests, in addition to descriptive statistics, tables, and graphs. The results of the study revealed no significant differences between genders on any form of motivation. Significant differences were found in types of motives relative to participants' scholarship status. However, these differences were not found in the direction theorized by SDT. No significant differences were observed for length of time on scholarship as measured in this study on forms of motivation. Finally, significant effects were identified for all extrinsic forms of motivation relative to the variable primary sport.

Book excerpt: Too few studies relating to motivation and wellness have targeted the NCAA Division II student-athlete (SA) population. PURPOSES: To examine differences in SAs' sport motivation (SM) types over three time points as well as multi-dimensional wellness (MDW) levels in SAs during one time point. METHODS: Overall, 530 Division II SAs (nmales = 355, nfemales = 175) with an overall age range of 18 to 23 (M = 19.40, SD = 1.33) from 21 teams voluntarily completed the 18-item Self-Determination Theory-based SM Scale II used to measure six motivation types, the 45-item MDW Inventory used to measure nine wellness dimensions, and a demographics questionnaire. Repeated measures Analyses of Variance (ANOVA) and 2x2x3 Mixed ANOVAs were used to analyze SM types while a multivariate ANOVA was used to analyze MDW with an alpha level of 0.05 set for statistical significance. RESULTS: Analyses demonstrated statistically significant differences in SM types over time (p = .05), interactions and differences in SM types between interactive/coactive and male/female SAs (p = .05), and interactions and differences in MDW levels between male/female SAs and SAs who completed/did not complete a college wellness course (p = .05). CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggested that autonomous-based SM types decreased over time whereas amotivation increased over time indicating possible athlete burnout. Interactive and female SAs showed similarities also representative of athlete burnout. SAs who completed the MDW course demonstrated higher physical wellness exercise scores than SAs who did not. Female SAs had higher means in five wellness dimensions when compared to male SAs. SAs who completed the course showed higher means for seven wellness dimensions versus SAs who did not. Further research should ensue to better understand motivation and wellness on a national scale examining Division I, II and III and NAIA athletes in order to provide more generalizable results.

Based on Self-Determination Theory and Cognitive Evaluation Theory (Deci &Ryan, 1985), this study had four purposes. The purposes of the current study were to: a) evaluating gender differences in preferences toward internal or external competition b) examining the relationship of competition preferences and sport achievement orientations with motivation type c) investigating the motivational profiles of athletes based on their competition preference towards internal and external competition and d) exploring gender differences in motivation and sport achievement orientations. Participants (N=142) were NCAA Division-I collegiate track and field athletes from various universities throughout the United States. The participants completed a measures assessing a demographic, a motivation type (Behavioral Regulation in Sport Questionnaire; BRSQ), sport achievement orientation (Sport Orientation Questionnaire; SOQ) and competition preference (Internal and External Competition Questionnaire; IECQ). Paired- samples t-tests, Pearson correlation and various ANOVAs were conducted to analyze the data. Results of the study indicated that a) both male and female track and field athletes have a higher preference for external competition than internal competition b) internal and external competition preference and sport achievement orientation variables were positively related to one or more self- determined motivational variables (intrinsic, integrated or identified motivation), c) three distinct competition preference groups were identified and there are motivational differences between the groups d) women had higher levels of self-determined forms of motivation than males, but no significant differences were found in sport achievement orientation. The results are discussed in relative to the Self-Determination Theory and Cognitive Evaluation Theory (Deci & Ryan, 1985).

Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative, non-experimental correlational survey study was to evaluate the relationship between sport motivation and the types of support received from coaches, parents, and peers for NCAA Division III athletes. NCAA Division III athletes (n= 74) who participated in baseball, softball, men’s and women’s basketball, and men’s and women's soccer during the 2021-2022 school year completed a demographic survey, the Sport Motivation Scale-II (SMS-II), and the Athlete Received Support Questionnaire (ARSQ). Scores for the SMS-II and the ARSQ were calculated, and a multiple linear regression was used to analyze the data. Athlete’s scores for the SMS-II averaged M= 39.08, with scores ranging from -38 to 105. Average scores on the ARSQ for coaches: emotional (M= 15.47), esteem (M= 16.24), informational (M= 20.32), and tangible (M= 20.91); parents: emotional (M= 22.27), esteem (M= 121.66), informational (M= 22.59), and tangible (M= 16.53); peers: emotional (M= 20.45), esteem (M= 20.38), informational (M= 22.97), and tangible (M= 20.79). A statistically significant relationship was found between sport motivation and the types of support provided by coaches, where the researcher rejected the null hypothesis F(4, 69) = 3.65, p = .009. An analysis of coefficients was performed, but none of the predictor variables were significant on their own. The researcher failed to reject the null hypothesis for parents F(4, 68) = 0.724, p = .579 and peers F(4, 68) = .705, p = .591. Based on the findings, social support from coaches has a positive impact on the sport motivation of NCAA Division III athletes. More research needs to be done to further determine the relationship between types of support provided by parents and peers and sport motivation.

Book excerpt: This quantitative, correlational study examined whether gender, sport-type, and sport attrition can predict university attrition of student-athletes from a small, private, NCAA DIII institution. Student-athletes attending DIII institutions are considered a vulnerable population and are largely under-studied. Participation in extra-curricular activities, such as belonging to an athletics team, has been linked to higher rates of social integration on campus and smoother transitions into college life overall. This participation has not been shown to decrease academic performance; however, university attrition of student-athletes remains a problem. This problem is especially relevant in smaller schools, where a small percentage of student attrition can create a sizable change in both revenue and campus climate. Student-athletes from a single institution (N = 409) made up the sample, with data being collected through archival data from the university. This study employed a logistic regression to analyze the data and determine the predictive association of gender, sport-type, and sport attrition on university attrition. Future studies should consider qualitative follow-up with student-athletes who have left their institution to determine whether there are more important factors in attrition that should be examined.

Student-athletes' individual experiences have received considerable attention in the popular media and literature as the pressures to perform both athletically and academically are vast (Benford, 2007; Meyer, 2005). The purpose of this study was to examine whether gender (men's vs. women's sports), sport visibility (highly visible versus non-highly visible sports), race (white vs. non-white), and perceived motivational climate (task- and ego-involved) significantly predicts motivation towards academics, athletics, and career. Finally, this study attempted to establish possible correlational explanations for the lack of academic integrity in intercollegiate athletics. Approximately 310 Division I student-athletes were contacted to participate in the study. Student-athletes in this study were recruited from one Midwest University. Gender, race, and sport visibility were assessed using the demographic questionnaire. To measure players' perceptions of the motivational climate on each team, the Perceived Motivational Climate in Sport Questionnaire-2 (PMCSQ-2); (Newton, Duda, & Yin, 2000) was used. The dependent variable of motivation was measured by using the Student Athlete's Motivation toward Sports and Academics Questionnaire (SAMSAQ); (Gaston-Gayles, 2004; 2005) to assess academic, athletic, and career motivation. To describe underlying structure principal components analysis was conducted. On the items of the PMCSQ-2, the analysis produced a three-component solution. The task-involving component accounted for 20.64% of the total variance, ego-involving approach accounted for 13.97% of the total variance, and the ego-involving avoidance accounted for 10.28% of the total variance. On the items of the SAMSAQ, the analysis produced a two-component solution. After iv rotation, the academic motivation component accounted for 21.60% of the total variance, while the sport motivation component accounted for 20.20% of the total variance. To describe and examine the existence of predictable relationships among the independent (gender, sport visibility, race, and perceived motivational climate) and dependent (motivation) variables, multiple regression was conducted. Female athletes with a female or male coach showed the relationship as more close and complementary than male athletes with a male coach. Male athletes with a male coach had more external motivation than female athletes with a female coach or a male coach. Female athletes with a female coach had less Introjected motivation than male athletes with a male or female coach. Female athletes with a male coach had less Introjected motivation than male athletes with a male or female coach.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Recent data indicates that college student athletes are graduating at higher rates than their non-student athlete peers; however, among student athletes in general, revenue sport student athletes are well below other college sport student athletes in terms of academic performance. One variable that has shown to have a connection with academic performance among college student athletes is academic motivation. An area within academic motivational research that has not been investigated is how a revenue sport student athlete’s time commitment to their sport (competition and non-competition semester) influences their academic motivation. Additionally, the large majority of research assessing academic motivation among college student athletes analyzed academic motivation at one point in time rather than throughout a time period. Conversely, this study examined academic motivation several times within an academic year, rather than at a single point in time. The study also aimed to determine if academic motivation among NCAA Division I football players is significantly different during their competition semester compared to their non-competition semester and if academic motivation changed from month to month within each semester. The researcher created a survey entitled the College Student‐Athlete Academic Motivation Survey (CSAAM-S) which examined academic motivation among 75 NCAA Division I football players during three months within a given semester. Using a repeated measures ANOVA, it was discovered that the football players had higher levels of academic motivation within their non-competition semester (Spring 2013) compared to their competition semester (Fall 2012). Also, differences were found in academic motivation for each month within the competition semester and the non-competition semester. Additionally, race/ethnicity, athletic standing, and scholarship type were also found to yield different levels of academic motivation among the football players. From a practical standpoint, investigating academic motivation through moments of time rather than a single moment of time can lead to a better understanding of the concept of academic motivation. Results from the study will be noteworthy in providing more information to campus leaders and athletic department administrators in order to develop, implement, and better time academic motivational programs for NCAA Division I football players.

Book excerpt: Student-athletes face multiple challenges in their first year of college; understanding what influences a healthy adjustment is critical to aiding their success (Parham, 1993; Turner & Thompson, 2014). First-year student-athletes are presented with the challenge of having to rapidly adjust to a new social and academic environment and having the added challenge of adjusting to a new sport environment. However, little is known about how student-athletes are coping with their first year in college. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between race, gender, coping styles, athletic identity and the college adjustment for first-year student-athletes at Division III institutions. Participants were 200 first-year Division III athletes. Their ages ranged from 18-21 years old (M = 18.49, SD = .56). Female identified student-athletes represented 42.5% of the sample and 56% were male identified. The sample was 73.5% European/White, 12.5% African American/Black, 5% Hispanic/Latino/a, 5% Biracial or Multiracial, 1% Asian, and .5% other race/ethnicity. Twenty-one team and individual sports were represented including revenue and non-revenue sports. Data were collected in person from three NCAA Division III Midwestern universities from the MIAA conference. The participants were administered a demographic form and three survey instruments: the Coping Strategy Indicator (Amirkhan, 1990) with three subscales measuring problem solving coping, seeking social support coping, and avoidance coping; the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (Brewer et al., 1993), and the Student Adjustment to College Questionnaire (Baker, McNeil, & Siryk, 1985; Baker & Siryk, 1984). Descriptive statistics and correlations were calculated to initially investigate relationships among the variables. An ANOVA and MANOVA were conducted to examine possible differences in athletic identity and coping styles associated with gender. Findings indicated that there were no significant differences in athletic identity associated with gender. With respect to coping styles, analyses yielded a significant multivariate effect associated with gender and coping styles, with women using more seeking social support strategies than men. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses were used to investigate the extent to which gender, race, coping styles and athletic identity predicted college adjustment. Regression analyses indicated that athletic identity was not a statistically significant predictor of adjustment to college, above and beyond the variance accounted for by race and gender. In the analyses related to coping styles and college adjustment, results revealed that the avoidant coping style was a statistically significant predictor of adjustment to college, after controlling for race and gender. More avoidant coping was associated with poorer adjustment to college. When all variables were entered into the regression model, gender and avoidant coping were the two significant unique predictors. Findings, implications, and directions for future research are discussed.
