Short range charge correlations are observed between all combinations of these hadron species, confirming that charge, strangeness and baryon number are conserved locally in the jet fragmentation process. The range of this effect is found to be independent of momentum. A strong long-range correlation is observed for high-momentum charged kaon pairs, and weaker long-range[pi][sup+]-[pi][sup -], [pi][sup+]-K[sup -] and p-K[sup -] correlations are observed. The SLC electron beam polarization is used to tag the quark hemisphere in each event, allowing the first study of rapidities signed such that positive rapidity is along the quark rather than antiquark direction. Distributions of signed rapidities and of ordered differences between signed rapidities provide new insights into leading particle production and several new tests of fragmentation models.

Short range charge correlations are observed between all combinations of these hadron species, indicating local conservation of quantum numbers and charge ordering in the jet fragmentation process. The rapidity range of this effect is found to be independent of particle momentum. Book excerpt: The authors have measured production rates as a function of momentum of the identified hadrons [pi], K, K°, K*°, [phi], p, [Lambda]° and their antihadrons in inclusive hadronic Z° decays, as well as separately in decays into light, c and b flavors. In addition they have compared hadron and antihadron production rates in light quark (rather than antiquark) jets. The SLD Cherenkov Ring Imaging Detector was used to identify charged hadrons. The vertex detector was used to tag high-purity samples of light- and b-flavor events. The electron beam polarization was used to tag samples of quark and antiquark jets. Clear flavor dependences are observed, consistent with expectations based upon measured production and decay properties of heavy hadrons. They use the light-flavor results to test the predictions of MLLA QCD and of various fragmentation models. Differences between hadron and antihadron production in light quark jets are observed at high momentum fraction, providing direct evidence that higher-momentum particles are more likely to contain a primary quark or antiquark, and they use these results to make a new direct measurement of strangeness suppression in the jet fragmentation process.

Book excerpt: The STAR Collaboration presents for the first time two-dimensional di-hadron correlations with identified leading hadrons in 200 GeV central Au + Au and minimum-bias d + Au collisions to explore hadronization mechanisms in the quark gluon plasma. The enhancement of the jet-like yield for leading pions in Au + Au data with respect to the d + Au reference and the absence of such an enhancement for leading non-pions (protons and kaons) are discussed within the context of a quark recombination scenario. The correlated yield at large angles, specifically in the ridge region, is found to be significantly higher for leading non-pions than pions. As a result, the consistencies of the constituent quark scaling, azimuthal harmonic model and a mini-jet modification model description of the data are tested, providing further constraints on hadronization.

Book excerpt: We present preliminary evidence for leading particle production in hadronic decays of the Z[sup 0] to light quark pairs using 150,000 events recorded in the SLD experiment at SLAC. The highly polarized electron beam produced by the SLC is used to tag quark and antiquark jets, and a signed impact parameter technique is employed to reject heavy flavor events. Charged hadrons are identified in the SLD Cherenkov Ring Imaging Detector (CRID) and[Lambda]/[bar[Lambda]] are reconstructed using their charged decay modes. In a high purity sample of quark jets, the baryon momentum spectrum is harder that that of the antibaryon, and conversely for a sample of antiquark jets, supporting the hypothesis that the faster particles in jets are more likely to carry the primary quark or antiquark from the Z[sup 0] decay. Similarly, more high momentum K[sup -] that K[sup+] are observed in quark jets and conversely for antiquark jets, consistent with the hypothesis that leading K[sup[+-]] are produced predominantly in s[bar s] events rather than[ital u][bar[ital u]] events.

Book excerpt: This dissertation attempts to probe hadronization, the process by which the fundamental quarks described by quantum chromodynamics produce the jets of hadrons that the author observed in experiments. The measurements are made using e[sup+]e[sup -] collisions at the SLAC Linear Collider (SLC), operating at the Z[sup 0] resonance with the SLC Large Detector (SLD), and the unique capabilities of the SLC/SLD facility are exploited. First, the spectra of charged hadrons ([pi][sup[+-]], K[sup[+-]], and p/[bar p]) are measured. This is accomplished with the SLD Cherenkov Ring Imaging Detector (CRID), one of a first generation of devices that have been developed for efficient particle identification over a wide momentum range. The use of the CRID is central to this dissertation, and its design and performance are described in detail here. The measured spectra agree with other measurements at the Z[sup 0] and extend the momentum coverage. Next, the excellent spatial resolution of the SLD tracking systems, along with the small and stable beam spots of the SLC, is employed to identify jets produced from heavy b or c quarks and to separate them from the remaining light-quark (uds) jets. This removes the effects of heavy quark fragmentation and decays of heavy-quark hadrons from the study of hadronization. The first measurements of particle spectra in light-quark jets are then presented. Finally, the highly-polarized incident electron beam of the SLC, together with the electroweak asymmetries of the quarks, is exploited to separate quark and antiquark jets. Significant differences in quark-antiquark production of protons and of kaons are observed at high momenta. This signal suggests a leading particle effect, where the particles containing the primary quark of a jet are more likely to populate the high-momentum phase space than are other hadrons.

Differences between hadron and antihadron production at high momentum fraction provide precise measurements of leading particle production and new, stringent tests of fragmentation models.
