Book excerpt: During China's reform and opening-up era, hundreds of millions of peasants have moved to urban areas looking for jobs, which constitutes the largest movement of labor in human history. This large-scale labor migration has drawn much public and academic attention. Yet there has been little research seeking to understand public opinion on internal migrants. This article examines the role of material factors in urbanites' opinion formation about internal migration. Leveraging an original public opinion survey with an embedded experiment, this study finds that urbanites in general are not supportive of internal labor migration. When asked a general attitudinal question, urbanites do not make an immediate, strong connection between their economic situations and internal migration. When urbanites are exposed to information about the negative impact of internal migration on local labor markets and public finance, economic considerations become prominent in their opinion formation. This study is among the first to systemically examine the determinants of public opinion about China's internal migration. Findings in the article have implications for reform of the household registration system and public goods provision in China.

Book excerpt: In 2010, the International Labour Organization (ILO) conducted a large-scale public opinion survey of 4,020 nationals in four Asian migrant destination countries - the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand - to assess public attitudes towards migrant workers. In 2019, nearly a decade later, the TRIANGLE in ASEAN (ILO) and Safe and Fair (ILO and UN Women) projects have conducted a similar survey of 4,099 nationals to track trends in Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand, and adding Japan, given its emergence as an important destination country for low-skilled migrant workers in Asia. Findings from the study indicate that support for migrant workers has decreased overall in the last nine years. Where there is public support for migrants, it is largely driven by the relationships people have with migrant workers, rather than demographic characteristics. Knowledge regarding migrant workers across the four countries remains low, and discriminatory attitudes prevail with significant numbers of members of the public in migrant destination countries stating that migrant workers should not enjoy equal working conditions with nationals. However, the public in countries of destination show more positive support for policies that particularly address gender equality, violence against women, and problems in women dominant job sectors. Respondents largely agreed that care work should be recognized as a profession, and that women migrant workers should receive maternity leave. Similarly, respondents expressed support for shelters when women migrant workers face violence, and for stronger enforcement against violence against women.

Book excerpt: Migrant workers, meaning those who used to be farmers but have left rural areas and found jobs in cities as a result of economic reform and rapid development in China, have made a significant contribution to the burgeoning labor market and played an important role in speeding up the transition from a planned to a market economy. This present paper considers the economic status and social attitudes of migrant workers. It is based on the analysis of a large-scale survey in 2006, which was conducted using questionnaires and covered 28 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions throughout the country. It was found that the income status of migrant workers depends heavily on the education and technical skills that they have developed, rather than on identity-based discrimination. Surprisingly, it was also found that those on less income and of lower economic and social status show more positive attitudes to society than those who are affluent and considered of higher social status. It is concluded that the decisive factor in attitude and behavior of migrant workers is historic rather than economic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation explored help seeking for mental health concerns in migrant workers using a community-based mixed-methods design. Specifically, the study asked two sets of questions; the first explored individual-level predictors of help seeking and the second focused on contextual-level factors related to mental health, well-being, and help seeking. Participants were 95 Latina/o migrant workers living in South Florida. A portion of these individuals participated in the qualitative phase. Hierarchical regression analyses were used to answer the first set of questions. Results indicated informal help seeking was predicted by gender, acculturation, coping strategy, depressive symptomology, and attitudes toward seeking professional help. Five themes emerged from directed content analysis of focus group and interview data. The current study found that migrant workers experience significant levels of depressive symptomology, which is consistent with the literature on the mental and physical health of migrant workers. A unique contribution is the moderator analysis, which found that the level of depressive symptomology moderated the effect of religious coping on help seeking. From the perspective of participants, the centrality of children appeared as a protective factor in their lives. The implications of these findings for practice, research, and policy are discussed.
