This book begins to examine the above by investigating three solo piano works that synthesize various Chinese traditional practices and certain aspects of Western art music. The Treatise covers her most significant solo piano compositions to date, which include Singing in the Mountain, Guessing, Ji-Dong-Nuo, Duo Ye and Ba Ban. Her compositions achieve an impressive fusion of Chinese and Western musical idioms, displaying excellent craftsmanship that is original and brilliantly effective. This Treatise comprises five chapters. Chapter One explains the background and significance of this project, as well as its purpose. Chen Yi's own personal and professional background is also introduced in this chapter through references, documented interviews, and personal correspondence. Her musical training, heritage, and cultural influences to her musicianship are vividly explored. Chapter Two is divided into two sections: 1) the musical and historical background of each of Chen Yi's solo piano works chosen for this study, and 2) the background of ancient Chinese musical aesthetics. A brief introduction to each solo piano work highlights its significant compositional background. The survey of essential ancient Chinese musical concepts brings to light the distinct Chinese inspiration in Chen Yi's music. The material covered in these two sections will provide sufficient background knowledge necessary to recognize and appreciate Chen Yi's compositional style, which is studied in detail in Chapter Three. This chapter surveys her most frequently used musical devices and unique compositional idioms, as examined through specific musical examples from her solo piano works. Chapter Four is an in-depth, vivid theoretical analysis of Chen Yi's largest solo piano works, Duo Ye and Ba Ban. Book excerpt: This paper describes six representative works by twentieth-century Chinese composers: Jian-Zhong Wang, Er-Yao Lin, Yi-Qiang Sun, Pei-Xun Chen, Ying-Hai Li, and Yi Chen, which are recorded by the author on the CD. The six pieces selected for the CD all exemplify traits of Nationalism, with or without Western influences. Of the six works on the CD, two are transcriptions of the Han Chinese folk-like songs, one is a composition in the style of the Uyghur folk music, two are transcriptions of traditional Chinese instrumental music dating back to the eighteenth century, and one is an original composition in a contemporary style using folk materials. Two of the composers, who studied in the United States, were strongly influenced by Western compositional style. The other four, who did not study abroad, retained traditional Chinese style in their compositions. The pianistic level of difficulty in these six pieces varies from intermediate to advanced level. This paper includes biographical information for the six composers, background information on the compositions, and a brief analysis of each work. The author was exposed to these six pieces growing up, always believing that they are beautiful and deserve to be appreciated. When the author came to the United States for her studies, she realized that Chinese compositions, including these six pieces, were not sufficiently known to her peers. This recording and paper are offered in the hopes of promoting a wider familiarity with Chinese music and culture.

Debussy is one of the most prominent composers in the history of Western music, and his music draws on many features for inspiration, among which Asian elements and impressionism are the most representative. Debussy was inspired by Asian music, literature, and painting in many compositions, giving these works distinctive sound qualities as well as artistic appeal.Based on a comprehensive study of scholarly literature as well as theoretical analysis, this project explores several Asian influences on Debussy and offers reasons for the formation of Asian style in Debussy's music. Particular elements of Asian style examined include Japanese prints and painting, Javanese gamelan music, and the Chinese pentatonic scale. Through the analysis of several of Debussy's piano pieces, including "Et la lune descend sur le temple qui fut", "La fille aux cheveux de lin", and "Le palais du silence", This study discusses how Debussy's exotic colors reflect various Asian styles. Additionally, through research on Chinese music history and theory, this project compares and summarizes several differences between Chinese music and Debussy s own music in various compositions. It also analyzes three Chinese piano pieces in order to make comparisons with Debussy's music. This research supports the conclusion that Asian influences, including Chinese elements, endowed Debussy with indispensable inspiration and artistic expression in his musical compositions.

Book excerpt: This lecture-recital document traces the lineage of pentatonicism, Chinese music theory, and Chinese philosophy from Ancient China to the Jesuits, to Rameau, to Laloy, and finally to Debussy. The Jesuits wrote treatises on Chinese music theory and culture, which they brought back to the West. These treatises were studied by Western musicians, eventually leading to Debussy’s use of the pentatonic scale. After exploring this history, one can find the ways in which Debussy’s philosophy on “Nature” and “Harmony” in fact parallels those same philosophical concepts in Chinese culture. Both Debussy and the ancient Chinese believed in spiritual interconnections between the Earth, the heavens, humankind, and the arts. These connections impacted the way they wrote and performed music. Once the historical, philosophical, and cultural interconnections are understood, one may understand Debussy’s music in a new light. This lecture-recital document reinterprets a selection of Debussy’s piano music based on these philosophical and aesthetic parallels.

Book excerpt: Although Béla Bartók never visited China, his music was widely performed and accepted in China after 1949 because of his significant contributions to the combination of western compositional techniques and national music elements. Many Chinese composers of different generations have been inspired by his achievement. This research focuses on the study of selected contemporary Chinese solo piano music after 1980 and investigates Bartók's influence on these works. Besides repertoire practice, which occupied most research time, the research methods included a literature review, analysis of compositions and interviews with composers. This research discusses Bartók's treatment of Hungarian folk music on three levels in keyboard compositions, and explores their influence on selected contemporary Chinese piano music. Furthermore, it develops performance techniques and approaches to interpretation of these selected works, especially the specific techniques which are related to the playing of traditional instruments and folk singing. This research highlights not only how the composers combine their national musical language with western compositional techniques, but also how pianists can deliver this national musical idiom and the spirit of folk music through performance. The outcomes of this project are two 60-minute recital recordings and this supporting exegesis.
