This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of Archaism in Euripides I shall here consider some of the ways in which Euripides, the man of curious and ironic history, as Professor Murray terms him, set himself to restore and revivify old forms of tragedy and older usages, and in which he carried on the tradition of Aeschylus, the poet with whom Aristophanes unfavorably com pared him in the Hogs. Strange as it may seem to consider the sceptic and recluse, the innovator and reformer, as the suc cessor of the warrior of Marathon, we shall find it true that in many ways Euripides undertook successfully to revive and adapt the methods of Aeschylus, and that we can understand better many of the peculiarities of his dramatic technique, if we consider them from this point of view. Book Synopsis Euripides' Kresphontes and Archelaos by : A. Harder
Download or read book Euripides' Kresphontes and Archelaos written by A. Harder and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains an introduction to the text of and a commentary on the fragments of two plays by Euripides, the Kresphontes (ca. 424 B.C.) and the Archelaos (ca. 408/7 B.C.) Fragments of both plays are preserved in quotations by other writers and in recently published papyri. The introduction discusses aspects of the background and of the contents of the plays, such as, for example, their first performances, the relation of the Kresphontes with the plays about Orestes, and Euripides' motives in writing the Archelaos (politics or flattery?). The commentary to each play deals with the interpretation of the fragments and testimonia, with textual problems and with typical elements of Euripides' style. This is the first full-scale treatment of both plays and offers, thanks to modern papyrus finds, some new evidence on their composition and context. The text of the papyrus fragments is based on personal inspection of the papyri concerned, which has resulted in a number of new readings.

Book Synopsis Euripides' "Alcestis" by : Andreas Markantonatos
Download or read book Euripides' "Alcestis" written by Andreas Markantonatos and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-10-14 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is an accessible yet in-depth narratological study of Euripides’ Alcestis - the earliest extant play of Euripides and one of the most experimental masterpieces of Greek tragedy, not only standing in place of a satyr-play but also preserving at least some of its typical features. Commencing from the widely-held view, so lamentably ignored within the domain of Classics, that a narratology of drama should be predicated upon the notion of narrative as verbal, as well as visual, rendition of a story, this unique volume contextualizes the play in terms of its reception by the original audience, locating the intricate narrative tropes of the plot in the dynamics of fifth-century Athenian mythology and religion.
