Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preacher, Sermon and Audience in the Middle Ages presents research by specialists of preaching history and literature. This volume fills some of the lacunae which exists in medieval sermon studies. The topics include: an analysis of how oral and written cultures meet in sermon literature, the function of vernacular sermons, an examination of the usefulness of non-sermon sources such as art in the study of preaching history, sermon genres, the significance of heretical preaching, audience composition and its influence on sermon content, and the use of rhetoric in sermon construction. The study looks at preaching history and literature from a wide geographical and chronological area which includes examples from Anglo-Saxon England to late medieval Italy. While doing so, it outlines the state of sermon studies research and points to new areas of investigation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The four Middle English sermons from British Library, MS Harley 2268, for the occasions of the Annunciation/Passion Sunday, the Feast of St Mary Magdalene, a Procession, and a Dedication of an Altar to St Anne are edited here for the first time. They form an integrated group, sharing a consistency in content, a similarity of style, and a uniformity of outlook. Although clearly the work of a very scholarly preacher and replete with authorities both biblical and patristic, the tone adopted can also be a populist one, while the preacher makes use of images and allegories more often found in obviously literary works. Prepared at the peak of the Lollard threat and at the height of the turmoil of the Schism, the sermons provide an important example of outspoken and political preaching. Moreover, there is probably a wider range of implicit and explicit contextual information for the Harley 2268 texts than for any other similar set of sermons. This evidence gives strong support to the argument that the sermons were associated with the Benedictine Abbey of St Mary in York, specifically the abbot, Thomas Spofford, and were designed for different venues in York in the early decades of the fifteenth century.

This is the first scholarly study systematically to describe and analyse the collections of Latin sermons from the golden age of medieval preaching in England, the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Basing his studies on the extant manuscripts, Siegfried Wenzel analyses these sermons and the occasions when they were given. Larger issues of preaching in the later Middle Ages such as the pastoral concern about preaching, originality in sermon making, and the attitudes of orthodox preachers to Lollardy, receive detailed attention. The surviving sermons and their collections are listed for the first time in full inventories, which supplement the critical and contextual material Wenzel presents. This book is an important contribution to the study of medieval preaching, and will be essential for scholars of late medieval literature, history and religious thought.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering snapshots of mercantile devotion to saints in different regions, this volume is the first to ask explicitly how merchants invoked saints, and why. Despite medieval and modern stereotypes of merchants as godless and avaricious, medieval traders were highly devout – and rightly so. Overseas trade was dangerous, and merchants’ commercial activities were seen as jeopardizing their souls. Merchants turned to saints for protection and succor, identifying those most likely to preserve their goods, families, reputations, and souls. The essays in this collection, written from diverse angles, range across later medieval western Europe, from Spain to Italy to England and the Hanseatic League. They offer a multi-disciplinary examination of the ways that medieval merchants, from petty traders to influential overseas wholesalers, deployed the cults of saints. Three primary themes are addressed: danger, community, and the unity of spiritual and cultural capital. Each of these themes allows the international panel of contributors to demonstrate the significant role of saints in mercantile life. This book is unique in its exploration of saints and commerce, shedding light on the everyday role religion played in medieval life. As such, it will be of keen interest to scholars of religious history, medieval history, art history, and literature.
