Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has long been noted that the book of Lamentations shares, at least in part, a theological outlook with the prophetic literature that the destruction of Jerusalem was the result of Yahweh's decisive action against the sins of the nation. Too often, however, this relationship has simply been presupposed, or assumed to be a relationship of shared perspective. To date, there has been no systematic exploration of how it is that Lamentations accepts and/or modifies the theological outlook of the prophetic literature. In addition, when the theology of the prophets has been discussed in relation to Lamentations, there has been a tendency to group all the prophetic books together as if they existed as a homogeneous whole, and shared amongst themselves a singular outlook. This tendency to simplify the theological complexity of the prophetic literature coincides with a similar tendency to reduce the theology of Lamentations to simple, monotheistic assertions. Drawing on the literary insights of Mikhail Bakhtin, this study aims to explore in detail the nature of the relationship between Lamentations and the pre-exilic/exilic prophetic literature. Drawing on the notions of dialogism, polyphony and double-voicing, the study argues that Lamentations enters into a dialogic relationship with prophetic literature, a relationship that both affirms and subverts that literature. Central to the acknowledgement of the dialogic interaction between Lamentations and the prophetic literature is the recognition of Lamentations as a multivalent, polyphonic text in which unmerged viewpoints exist in a tension-filled relationship.

Book excerpt: A Free World Novel THE CITY OF SHARON Real or Imagined: The story is based on actual happenings. The totalitarian situation is common knowledge. Some of the dialog is based on rumor and hearsay and sketchy news reports. The characters are aware of limited mythical influence caused by extreme duress. A prime character, Frederick von Popenov spent the first ten years of his life living with his family on a small farm in the country. Life suddenly changed when the nations political party in control nationalizes industry and sets up the police state and the network city. Nobody was allowed to own property or valuables. Many lower class people were sent to work in the common factories and on the common farms. The class workers and peasants sent to live and work at the City of Sharon found life difficult. Caught in the chaos and desperation of the common movement they miraculously escape the gulag or prison. A series of events involve a people from another side whose presence and assistance culminates in the prisoners escape into the hills around the devastated city. Unknown to the public, due to the type of people sent to live there, the City of Sharon had been set up as a designated bombing target by the World Board of Directors. While the prisoners make their escape, the city is obliterated by a nuclear bomb. Those who remained there were killed. Those who lived in other network cities became suspicious of their invisible government due to the total devastation of the city. All the people begin to look for a way out of party domination. Timorous, desperate and frightened, the fugitives begin a free world civilization in the wilderness about the the city of Sharon. The survivors elude the authorities in control of the totalitarian state and build a military defense system and prepare to defend their new found freedom or nation.

Book excerpt: Volume 3 "POLITICS and GOVERNMENT’ of the American Cities; series. This collection brings together more than 200 scholarly articles pertaining to the history and development of urban life in the United States during the past two centuries. The articles about municipal government contained in the third volume include discussions of how rapid urbanization in the early nineteenth century produced a chain reaction, creating first the need for new political institutions, then the rise of machine politics, and, finally, reform movements that designed, advocated, and implemented new institutional structures such as the commission and city manager forms of government. Volume 3 also includes articles that consider the nature of intergovernmental relations at the end of the twentieth century and the connections between the governments of cities and the governments of the regions surrounding them—localities, states, and the nation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: She eyed him nervously, this man who could end her life without a second thought. She had been complacent, lulled into forgetting the immense power he wielded over her ... London, 1941, and in the battered capital of occupied Britain, Emilia Shaw works as a translator for ruthless SS General Oskar Voigt. But Emilia is also a resistance spy, desperate to avoid the scrutiny of Voigt’s security chief, Irish policeman Brendan O’Connor, and his brutal offsider, SS Colonel Hans Morser. Promised the crown, the Duke of Windsor returns to London, unleashing a wave of violence from the resistance. The Duke pressures the puppet government for his coronation, but finds himself at the mercy of Hitler, the supreme kingmaker. As the violence escalates, Emilia is hunted by both the SS and the resistance, caught in the crossfire as the country threatens to implode. Ultimately, its fate lies in the hands of one man — the most unlikely of them all. Power and Obsession is the vividly imagined tale of an occupied London, a dark labyrinth peopled by the sinister, the smug and the sadistic. Yet it is also a gripping tale of reckless audacity and the obsessive search for justice.
