Book excerpt: ISSN: 2397-9607 Issue 111 ÿ In issue 111 of the Baba Indaba Children's Stories, Baba Indaba narrates the West African tale about A Maiden and a Pumpkin. A young girl asks her mother to pick her a pumpkin, and the mother, already laden, says not today. The next day the girl awakes to see the pumpkin she wanted hopping into town and it begins to follow her about asking to be fed meat ...?? Download and read this story to find out what happened to the girl, her mother and her meat-eating pumpkin. ÿ INCLUDES LINKS TO DOWNLOAD 8 FREE STORIES ÿ Each issue also has a "WHERE IN THE WORLD - LOOK IT UP" section, where young readers are challenged to look up a place on a map somewhere in the world. The place, town or city is relevant to the story, on map. HINT - use Google maps. ÿ Baba Indaba is a fictitious Zulu storyteller who narrates children's stories from around the world. Baba Indaba translates as "Father of Stories". ÿ It is believed that folklore and tales are believed to have originated in India and made their way overland along the Silk and Spice routes and through Central Asia before arriving in Europe. Even so, this does not cover all folklore from all four corners of the world. Indeed folklore, legends and myths from Africa, Australia, Polynesia, and some from Asia too, are altogether quite different and seem to have originated on the whole from separate reservoirs of lore, legend and culture. ÿ Baba Indaba,Childrens,Folklore,Fairy,Tales, bedtime story, legends,West Africa,Hausa, girl, mother, pumpkin

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When R. Sutherland Rattray joined the School of Anthropology at Exeter College, Oxford, he had already published Chinyanja Folklore which documented the tales and customs of the Chinyanja of Central Africa. He was also quite familiar with several West African languages. Therefore on his transfer to West Africa learning about the Hausa language and culture became another string in his already full bow and it was only a matter of time before Hausa Folklore was published. However, understanding the Hausa culture requires an understanding of Islam itself-a task that can seem near insurmountable when the student is from a Western back- ground. Hausa Folklore does not claim to stand alone-a considerable library of Hausa literature already exists. Hausa Folklore is an enrichment of this proud tradition, which brings the Western world directly into contact with Hausa culture. This volume tells of the origin of the spider, of beautiful maidens, of how hartebeest came by the teardrops under their eyes, of witches, of doctors riding hyenas on pilgrimages, of the cause of thunder, and more. Some of these tales are more fairy than legend and others more folk than fairy. Each story imparts a clear message about right and wrong while showing what colour and variety lies hidden in the monotone of the Sahara. A percentage of the profit from the sale of this book will go towards organisations which offer educational scholarships in Africa. So curl up with these unique West African stories from yesteryear with the knowledge that you have helped sponsor the education of an underprivileged African youth.

Book excerpt: ISSN: 2397-9607 Issue 404 In this 404th issue of the Baba Indaba?s Children's Stories series, Baba Indaba narrates the Swahili Fairy Tale "THE ONE-HANDED GIRL?. A dying man asked his children which they would have: his property or his blessing. His son wanted his property, and his daughter his blessing. He died. Soon after, his wife died as well, and again, the son wanted her property and the daughter her blessing. She died. The brother left his sister only a pot and a vessel, but people borrowed her pot and gave her corn for it, so the sister survived. One day, she had a pumpkin seed and planted it, and grew pumpkins as well. Her brother, envious, stole her pot and mortar, but she was able to replace them by selling her pumpkins. Her brother's wife sent a slave to buy one, and the sister gave her one for free, though there were few left, so the wife sent another slave, and this one the sister had to send away, because there were none left. The wife wept and told the brother that his sister would sell pumpkins to other people but not to her. Enraged, the brother went to cut the sister's pumpkin patch down. His sister told him that if he did, he would cut off her hand with it, but putting her hand on it did her no good: he cut it off while chopping down the vines. Then he sold the house she lived in and cast her out. Well, what happened next you ask?? Well many things happened. There were some strange, some silly and some serious occurrences. But exactly what were they? To find the answers to these questions, and others you may have, you will have to download and read this story to find out! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: collected and retold by Buchi Offodile Once upon a moonlit night, children gathered elbow to elbow, lying on the ground, while the adults sat near by, drinking and snacking. They listened to the storyteller, who held adult and child alike rapt with animal noises and spooky voices, gesture and song, call and response, until the wick of the palm-oil lamp ran down and the storyteller tired. It wasn’t that the stories themselves were over—no, many more were yet to be told: tales of the ever-scheming tortoise, spider, or hare; tales of spirits tempting children; tales of fate punishing whole villages for their folly, or rewarding them for their perseverance. Though almost all the tales have morals, the most popular characters are the tricksters: the tortoise, the spider, and the hare. The Orphan Girl includes a fascinating introduction exploring the roots of the storytelling tradition in the history and culture of West Africa. History’s boundaries divide this book by nation, from Mauritania into the continent’s interior, to the hinterlands of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, and down the Atlantic coast as far as Cameroon. Each country is represented by several stories, a map and brief information. Invariably though, as all of these countries share common origins and cultures, the stories overlap and play off each other. For example, a Ghanaian story featuring Anansi, the spider, is almost the same tale told by the Igbos of Eastern Nigeria starring Mbe Nwaniga, the tortoise.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twenty-one folk and fairy tales in this volume are dedicated to the victims of the Grenfell Tower Fire disaster which occurred on 14 June 2017. They have been selected from the folklore and legends of the countries from which the victims originated. These stories can be found in the Public Domain where, for the majority of the time, they lie dormant and forgotten. In republishing these forgotten children’s stories, we hope that we will be creating a lasting legacy for the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire, so that, unlike these stories, the memory of the victims will never fade into obscurity. The title of the book, while not quite a portmanteau, has been developed by blending the name of Grenfell Tower’s local tube station, Latimer Road, and word-morphing the name of an adjacent street, Bramley Road, into Rambles. I hope you will enjoy these stories as much as I enjoyed compiling this special book. John Halsted, Author and Publisher
