Book excerpt: Stochastic processes often pose the difficulty that, as soon as a model devi ates from the simplest kinds of assumptions, the differential equations obtained for the density and the generating functions become mathematically formidable. Worse still, one is very often led to equations which have no known solution and don't yield to standard analytical methods for differential equations. In the model considered here, one for tumor growth with an immunological re sponse from the normal tissue, a nonlinear term in the transition probability for the death of a tumor cell leads to the above-mentioned complications. Despite the mathematical disadvantages of this nonlinearity, we are able to consider a more sophisticated model biologically. Ultimately, in order to achieve a more realistic representation of a complicated phenomenon, it is necessary to examine mechanisms which allow the model to deviate from the more mathematically tractable linear format. Thus far, stochastic models for tumor growth have almost exclusively considered linear transition probabilities.

Book excerpt: The articles of these proceedings arise from a NSF-CBMS regional conference on the mathematical modeling of the hearing process, that was held at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the summer of 1980. To put the a=ticles in perspective, it is best to briefly review the history of suc~ modeling. It has proceeded, more or less, in three stages. The first was initiated by Herman Helmholtz in the 1880's, whose theories dominated the subject for years. However, because of his lack of accurate experimental data and his heuristic arguments it became apparent that his models needed revision. Accordingly, based on the experimental observations of von Bekesy, the "long wave" theories were developed in the 1950's by investigators such as Zwislocki, Peterson, and Bogert. However, as the ex?eri~ents became more refined (such as Rhode's ~wssbauer Measurements) even these models came into question. This has brought on a flurry of 'activity in recent years into how to extend the models to account for these more recent eXT. lerimental observations. One approach is through a device co~monly refered to as a second filter (see Allen's article) and another is through a more elaborate hydroelastic model (see Chadwick's article). In conjunction with this latter approach, there has been some recent work on developing a low frequency model of the cochlea (see Holmes' article).

Book excerpt: A rich and abundant literature has developed during the last half century dealing with mechanical aspects of the eye, mainly from clinical and, experimental points of view. For the most part, workers have attempted to shed light on the complex set of conditions known by the general term glaucoma. These conditions are characterised by an increase in intraocular pressure sufficient to cause de generation of the optic disc and concomitant defects in the visual field, which, if not controlled, lead to inevitable permanent blindness. In the United States alone, an estimated 50,000 persons are blind as a result of glaucoma, which strikes about 2% of the population over 40 years of age (Vaughan and Asbury, 1974). An understanding of the underlying mechanisms of glaucoma is hindered by the fact that elevated intraocular pressure, like a runny nose, is but a symptom which may have a variety of causes. Only by turning to the initial pathology can one hope to understand this important class of medical problems.

Possible applications of the theory presented are indica ted throughout the text. However, they are not explored in de tail for two reasons : first, the universal character of n- ral activity in nearly all animals requires some type of a general approach~ secondly, the mathematical perspicuity would suffer if too many experimental details and empirical peculiarities were interspersed among the mathematical investigation. A guide to many applications is supplied by the references concerning a variety of specific issues. Of course the theory does not aim at covering all individual problems. Moreover there are other approaches to neural network theory (see e.g. Poggio-Torre, 1978) based on the different lev els at which the nervous system may be viewed. The theory is a deterministic one reflecting the average be havior of neurons or neuron pools. In this respect the essay is written in the spirit of the work of Cowan, Feldman, and Wilson (see sect. 2.2). The networks are described by systems of nonlinear integral equations. Therefore the paper can also be read as a course in nonlinear system theory. The interpretation of the elements as neurons is not a necessary one. However, for vividness the mathematical results are often expressed in neurophysiological terms, such as excitation, inhibition, membrane potentials, and impulse frequencies. The nonlinearities are essential constituents of the theory.

In this text, some fundamental theoretical and practical questions are resolved. Despite recent research activity in the area, the crucial subject of the uniqueness of the reconstruction and the effect of noise in the data posed some unsettled fundamental questions. In particular, Kennan Smith proved that if we describe an object by a C^inf_o function, i.e., infinitely differentiable with compact support, then there are other objects with the same shape, i.e., support, which can differ almost arbitrarily and still have the same projections in finitely many directions. On the other hand, he proved that objects in finite dimensional function spaces are uniquely determined by a single projection for almost all angles, i.e., except on a set of measure zero. Along these lines, Herman and Rowland in "Three Methods for reconstructing objects from x-rays: a comparative study" (1973) showed that reconstructions obtained from the commonly used algorithms can grossly misrepresent the object and that the algorithm which produced the best reconstruction when using noiseless data gave unsatisfactory results with noisy data. Equally important are reports in Science, and personal communications by radiologists indicating that in medical practice failure rates of reconstruction vary from four to twenty percent. within this work, the mathematical dilemma posed by Kennan Smith's result is discussed and clarified.

Historically, the subject has its origin in several papers of Etherington in 1939- 1941. Fundamental contributions have been given by Schafer, Gonshor, Holgate, Reiers¢l, Heuch, and Abraham. At the moment there exist about forty papers in this field, one survey article by Monique Bertrand from 1966 based on four papers of Etherington, a paper by Schafer and Gonshor's first paper. Furthermore Ballonoff in the third section of his book "Genetics and Social Structure" has included four papers by Etherington and Reiers¢l's paper. Apparently a complete review, in par ticular one comprising more recent results was lacking, and it was difficult for students to enter this field of research. I started to write these notes in spring 1978. A first german version was finished at the end of that year. Further revision and translation required another year. I hope that the notes in their present state provide a reasonable review and that they will facilitate access to this field. I am especially grateful to Professor K. -P. Hadeler and Professor P. Holgate for reading the manuscript and giving essential comments to all versions of the text. I am also very grateful to Dr. I. Heuch for many discussions during and after his stay in TUbingen. Nonetheless, a number of workers in Japan, the United States and elsewhere have begun to contribute to a theory which provides techniques of mathematical analysis and computer simulation to explore properties of neural systems containing immense numbers of neurons. Recently, it has been gradually recognized that rather independent studies of the dynamics of pattern recognition, pattern format::ion, motor control, self-organization, etc. , in neural systems do in fact make use of common methods. We find that a "competition and cooperation" type of interaction plays a fundamental role in parallel information processing in the brain. The present volume brings together 23 papers presented at a U. S. -Japan Joint Seminar on "Competition and Cooperation in Neural Nets" which was designed to catalyze better integration of theory and experiment in these areas. It was held in Kyoto, Japan, February 15-19, 1982, under the joint sponsorship of the U. S. National Science Foundation and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. Participants included brain theorists, neurophysiologists, mathematicians, computer scientists, and physicists. There are seven papers from the U. S.
