Book excerpt: A stator turn fault in a safety-critical drive application must be detected at its initial stage and imperatively requires an evasive action to prevent a serious accident caused by an abrupt interruption in the drive's operation. However, this is much challenging for the case of an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) drives because of the presence of the permanent magnets that cannot be turned off at will. This work tackles the problem of increase the stator turn fault tolerance of IPMSM drives in safety-critical applications. This objective is achieved by an on-line turn fault detection method and a simple turn fault-tolerant operating strategy. In this work, it is shown that a stator turn fault in a current-controlled voltage source inverter-driven machine leads to a reduced fundamental positive sequence component of the voltage references as compared to the machine without a turn fault for a given torque reference and rotating speed. Based on this finding, a voltage reference-based turn fault detection method is proposed. In addition, it is also revealed that an adjustment to the level of the rotating magnetic flux in an appropriate manner can yield a significant reduction in the propagation speed of the fault and possibly prevention of the fault from spreading to the entire winding. This would be accomplished without any hardware modification. Based on this principle, a stator turn fault-tolerant operating strategy for IPMSM drives maintaining drive's availability is proposed. To evaluate these turn fault detection method and fault-tolerant operating strategy, an electrical model and a thermal model of an IPMSM with stator turn faults are derived. All the proposed models and methods are validated through simulations and experiments on a 10kW IPMSM drive.

Book excerpt: AC motors, specifically Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM) have been gainingpopularity in industrial applications due to their high efficiency, high power density and hightorque generation capabilities. Apart from industrial applications, the market share of these motorshas seen significantly increasing use in emerging technologies such as Electric vehicles (EVs),Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) as traction motors, and use in electric ships, and electricairplanes. To ensure safety and reliability of operation in safety critical applications, continuoushealth condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of these motors is essential. A robust and accuratefault diagnosis and condition monitoring reduces downtime and unplanned catastrophic failures, shutdowns, and maintenance, which saves both time, money, and labor. Through the availabledrive sensors such as current and voltage sensors, current and voltage information can be acquiredand used to diagnose different faults in the motor. This dissertation presents condition monitoringof stator Inter-Turn Short Circuit (ITSC) faults in PMSM motors.ITSC faults make up more than 40% of all PMSM electrical faults, mainly caused by extrememechanical, thermal, and electrical stresses. Other factors such as high dv/dt and chemicalsaccelerate insulation material aging and result in ITSC faults. ITSC fault causes high circulatingcurrents to be induced in the stator of the motors, and if not properly managed, can result in localoverheating which leads to further winding degradation and melting, which can result in completeshutdown of the machines operation. Thus, to avoid unexpected machine shutdowns, ITSC faultmust be monitored, diagnosed, and managed. This dissertation employs continuous monitoring of machines electrical parameters such as thestator resistance (Rs) and both d-axis and q-axis inductances (Ld and Lq) to detect any changeswhich may be a result of ITSC faults. Upon detecting changes in parameters, ITSC fault isdiagnosed by isolating it from other closely similar faults such as eccentricity faults. The techniques employed in this dissertation eliminates the use of extra sensors in the drive, andonly uses current sensors to acquire feedbacks, and uses voltages inside the micro-controller toestimate different parameters for diagnosis purposes.

Book excerpt: With countless electric motors being used in daily life, in everything from transportation and medical treatment to military operation and communication, unexpected failures can lead to the loss of valuable human life or a costly standstill in industry. To prevent this, it is important to precisely detect or continuously monitor the working condition of a motor. Electric Machines: Modeling, Condition Monitoring, and Fault Diagnosis reviews diagnosis technologies and provides an application guide for readers who want to research, develop, and implement a more effective fault diagnosis and condition monitoring scheme—thus improving safety and reliability in electric motor operation. It also supplies a solid foundation in the fundamentals of fault cause and effect. Combines Theoretical Analysis and Practical Application Written by experts in electrical engineering, the book approaches the fault diagnosis of electrical motors through the process of theoretical analysis and practical application. It begins by explaining how to analyze the fundamentals of machine failure using the winding functions method, the magnetic equivalent circuit method, and finite element analysis. It then examines how to implement fault diagnosis using techniques such as the motor current signature analysis (MCSA) method, frequency domain method, model-based techniques, and a pattern recognition scheme. Emphasizing the MCSA implementation method, the authors discuss robust signal processing techniques and the implementation of reference-frame-theory-based fault diagnosis for hybrid vehicles. Fault Modeling, Diagnosis, and Implementation in One Volume Based on years of research and development at the Electrical Machines & Power Electronics (EMPE) Laboratory at Texas A&M University, this book describes practical analysis and implementation strategies that readers can use in their work. It brings together, in one volume, the fundamentals of motor fault conditions, advanced fault modeling theory, fault diagnosis techniques, and low-cost DSP-based fault diagnosis implementation strategies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catastrophic failure of the electric machines can result from stator inter-turn faults even at their very incipient stage i.e. single-turn fault. Consequently, fire and explosion, loss of human life and property, extended downtime of the equipment, increased cost of repair and heavy financial losses in the industries may take place. As a recent trend, online fault diagnosis of the electric machines that are employed in critical applications has been considered of paramount importance since frequent outage of the machines for the purpose of testing cannot be recommended. In this thesis, a very accurate diagnostic scheme has been developed to unambiguously detect single-turn faults on line in squirrel cage induction machines by detecting positive and negative sequence line current third harmonic components. Initially, inadequacy has been identified in a diagnostic scheme based on negative sequence quantities of the machine and critical improvements have been realized to suppress the effects of changing supply unbalance. However the modified method fails to detect faults involving one turn short. The feasibility of computing positive and negative sequence line current third harmonic components have been proved by conducting space vector analysis. Subsequently, a detailed description upon the introduction of these line current third harmonic components is given that accounts for the effects of air gap permeance harmonics. MMF harmonics under supply unbalance, internal asymmetries as well as fault conditions. Least-square method is employed to discriminate fault signatures from those arise from other abnormal operating conditions. The implementation of the scheme is carried out on both simulated and experimental machines. Mathematical models of the induction machines have been developed which took different induction machine operating conditions into consideration. The machine has been simulated to verify the differences among different complex coefficients by computing complex line current spectra fault signatures with ideal (harmonics-free) three phase voltages input as well as experimentally collected voltages input. Further in an attempt to test the effectiveness of the diagnostic scheme under practical conditions, stator inter-turn faults associated with varying fault severities have been introduced to the line and inverter fed machines under different stator configuration. It has been demonstrated from experimental results that proposed fault signatures can achieve unambiguous single-turn fault detection. In addition the need of different coefficients for computing the positive and the negative third harmonic related fault signatures have also been demonstrated.

Book excerpt: Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM) are widely used in various applications from home appliances to electric vehicles due to its advantages like high efficiency, high power density etc. The market share of this type of motor is increasing significantly in the recent decade. In order to ensure their reliable operation in safety critical system, condition monitoring tools are essential. The effective fault diagnosis and condition monitoring system reduces downtime and unplanned maintenance which saves both time and money. Though several motor attributes like current, vibration, temperature etc. can be used for diagnosis of health condition of an electric motor, stray magnetic flux around the motor housing has rich information about the health status of PM motors due to the use of high energy magnets. This dissertation presents condition monitoring techniques which are developed to address three major issues in PMSM. Stator fault is the most common electrical fault which begins as an inter-turn failure. It is essential to identify this failure at its initial stage to prevent the catastrophic damage caused by stator fault. It is shown that the fundamental component of stray magnetic flux may result in fault negative error under certain operating conditions. To overcome this problem, third harmonic component is analyzed comprehensively and proposed as a reliable fault metric throughout the entire range of operation to detect and locate the fault. Secondly, the common mechanical fault in electrical motors, bearing damage is studied. It is shown that the magnetic field of PM motors exhibit asymmetry due to the manufacturing imperfections of magnet. A stray magnetic flux-based bearing fault detection method is proposed by leveraging this asymmetry. The proposed method is analyzed extensively in both simulations and experiments. A comparative study between motor current based detection and the proposed method is also performed. In the last part of the research, a stray magnetic flux based the temperature estimation of permanent magnet is proposed. The stray magnetic flux around the motor can be correlated to the magnet temperature. However, it also is affected by the permeability variation of iron core and magnetic field generated by the stator current. A compensation co-efficient is proposed to compensate the mentioned effects and obtain the permanent magnet component of stray magnetic flux from the measured data. Then the proposed scheme is adopted to estimate the temperature of magnets online under dynamic operating conditions.

Book excerpt: This book is a result of the author's work which was initiated about a decade ago and which, in the meantime, has resulted in his Ph.D. Thesis and several technical papers. The book deals with accurate modeling of electric machines during transient and steady states, a topic which has been usually avoided in the literature. The modeling techniques herein take into account all machine peculiarities, such as the type and connection of its windings, slotting, and saturation in the iron core. A special emphasis in the book is given to the exact physical interpretation of all phenomena which influence the machine's transient behavior. Besides the Introduction, the book has five chapters. The second chapter describes basic concepts of the magnetic equivalent circuit theory and has examples of magnetic equivalent circuits of several types of machines with their node potential equations. In the third chapter the transform matrices w' and w" of A.C. wind ings are derived. These matrices playa very important role in the magnetic equivalent circuit theory because they connect the quantities from the ma chine's magnetic equivalent circuit, branch fluxes, and mmfs with the ma chine's phase currents and fluxes.

Book excerpt: In this original book on model predictive control (MPC) for power electronics, the focus is put on high-power applications with multilevel converters operating at switching frequencies well below 1 kHz, such as medium-voltage drives and modular multi-level converters. Consisting of two main parts, the first offers a detailed review of three-phase power electronics, electrical machines, carrier-based pulse width modulation, optimized pulse patterns, state-of-the art converter control methods and the principle of MPC. The second part is an in-depth treatment of MPC methods that fully exploit the performance potential of high-power converters. These control methods combine the fast control responses of deadbeat control with the optimal steady-state performance of optimized pulse patterns by resolving the antagonism between the two. MPC is expected to evolve into the control method of choice for power electronic systems operating at low pulse numbers with multiple coupled variables and tight operating constraints it. Model Predictive Control of High Power Converters and Industrial Drives will enable to reader to learn how to increase the power capability of the converter, lower the current distortions, reduce the filter size, achieve very fast transient responses and ensure the reliable operation within safe operating area constraints. Targeted at power electronic practitioners working on control-related aspects as well as control engineers, the material is intuitively accessible, and the mathematical formulations are augmented by illustrations, simple examples and a book companion website featuring animations. Readers benefit from a concise and comprehensive treatment of MPC for industrial power electronics, enabling them to understand, implement and advance the field of high-performance MPC schemes.
