Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practical production of ordinary and special, high performance concretes and their behaviour and properties when fresh are the main themes of this book. It derives from the International RILEM Conference held in Paisley, Scotland in June 1996, and represents the culmination of the work of two RILEM Technical Committees (145 WSM Workability of Special Mixes, and 150 ECM Efficiency of Concrete Mixers). Very significant advances have been made recently in the development of concrete with outstanding properties. Such advances in research must be matched by progress in the technology of concrete production. This book focuses on production methods and on workability and handling, two fundamental and closely linked stages of the concrete construction process. It has a strongly practical emphasis, with many contributions showing how to build effectively using the many high performance concretes which have progressed from research into construction in recent years. The main themes covered are: production mixers and mixing processes; production methods; sprayed and very dry precasting mixes; fibre reinforced concrete; flowing and superfluid mixes; rheology; test methods; mix design and models; special cements and concretes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reliability of Structures enables both students and practising engineers to appreciate how to value and handle reliability as an important dimension of structural design. It discusses the concepts of limit states and limit state functions, and presents methodologies for calculating reliability indices and calibrating partial safety factors. It also supplies information on the probability distributions and parameters used to characterize both applied loads and member resistances. This revised and extended second edition contains more discussions of US and international codes and the issues underlying their development. There is significant revision and expansion of the discussion on Monte Carlo simulation, along with more examples. The book serves as a textbook for a one-semester course for advanced undergraduates or graduate students, or as a reference and guide to consulting structural engineers. Its emphasis is on the practical applications of structural reliability theory rather than the theory itself. Consequently, probability theory is treated as a tool, and enough is given to show the novice reader how to calculate reliability. Some background in structural engineering and structural mechanics is assumed. A solutions manual is available upon qualifying course adoption.

Book excerpt: The behavior of plain concrete subjected to a plane state of stress consisting of shearing compressive stress components has been investigated. It has been found by comparison with numerous test results that Mohr's rupture theory is adequate in predicting failure stresses for such cases. Equations based on Mohr's theory have been developed which express the "interaction" of the shearing and compressive stresses at failure. The problem of predicting the ultimate load of beams failing in shear has been approached by applying the "interaction" equations developed for plain concrete, since it has been recognized that failure in shear is essentially a failure of the concrete. A failure theory for the cases of beams with plain webs and beams with vertical stirrups has been developed. Test data from forty-five beams have been used to check the validity of the theory developed

Book excerpt: Behavioral equations were developed for reinforced concrete deep beams, especially in the realm of shear capacity. A series of static and dynamic beam tests was performed to aid in the development of this objective. Static shear behavior equations for deep beams were derived on the lower boundary of reinforced concrete deep beam data represented by research from this report and other research comprising 73 tests. Equations for a total static shear capacity are given which conservatively predict shear capacities of the beam tests considered. (Author).

Book excerpt: A statistical regression analysis was conducted on 146 selected test results from the literature to evaluate the basic ACI318 two-way shear strength equation, which has not changed since 1963. The basic ACI318 shear equation was established based on a statistical analysis of test results on scaled slab samples that were believed to have failed in shear. Only slabs with square columns, sheared on four sides and without shear reinforcement were needed in this study, resulting in 146 selected test results from 1956 to 2014. The study included slabs with normal and high strength concrete. This study presents new equations for slab punching shear capacity. The effect of several parameters on the punching shear strength is also discussed in this study. A simplified practical punching shear equation is also proposed based on statistical analysis of the experimental results from the database. The new proposed equations include the reinforcement ratio of the slab and the cubic root of the concrete strength. The study also showed that including the reinforcement ratio in the punching shear equation increases its accuracy. The new proposed equations are valid for normal and high strength concrete slabs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is focused on the theoretical and practical design of reinforced concrete beams, columns and frame structures. It is based on an analytical approach of designing normal reinforced concrete structural elements that are compatible with most international design rules, including for instance the European design rules – Eurocode 2 – for reinforced concrete structures. The book tries to distinguish between what belongs to the structural design philosophy of such structural elements (related to strength of materials arguments) and what belongs to the design rule aspects associated with specific characteristic data (for the material or loading parameters). A previous book, entitled Reinforced Concrete Beams, Columns and Frames – Mechanics and Design, deals with the fundamental aspects of the mechanics and design of reinforced concrete in general, both related to the Serviceability Limit State (SLS) and the Ultimate Limit State (ULS), whereas the current book deals with more advanced ULS aspects, along with instability and second-order analysis aspects. Some recent research results including the use of non-local mechanics are also presented. This book is aimed at Masters-level students, engineers, researchers and teachers in the field of reinforced concrete design. Most of the books in this area are very practical or code-oriented, whereas this book is more theoretically based, using rigorous mathematics and mechanics tools. Contents 1. Advanced Design at Ultimate Limit State (ULS). 2. Slender Compression Members – Mechanics and Design. 3. Approximate Analysis Methods. Appendix 1. Cardano’s Method. Appendix 2. Steel Reinforcement Table. About the Authors Jostein Hellesland has been Professor of Structural Mechanics at the University of Oslo, Norway since January 1988. His contribution to the field of stability has been recognized and magnified by many high-quality papers in famous international journals such as Engineering Structures, Thin-Walled Structures, Journal of Constructional Steel Research and Journal of Structural Engineering. Noël Challamel is Professor in Civil Engineering at UBS, University of South Brittany in France and chairman of the EMI-ASCE Stability committee. His contributions mainly concern the dynamics, stability and inelastic behavior of structural components, with special emphasis on Continuum Damage Mechanics (more than 70 publications in International peer-reviewed journals). Charles Casandjian was formerly Associate Professor at INSA (French National Institute of Applied Sciences), Rennes, France and the chairman of the course on reinforced concrete design. He has published work on the mechanics of concrete and is also involved in creating a web experience for teaching reinforced concrete design – BA-CORTEX. Christophe Lanos is Professor in Civil Engineering at the University of Rennes 1 in France. He has mainly published work on the mechanics of concrete, as well as other related subjects. He is also involved in creating a web experience for teaching reinforced concrete design – BA-CORTEX.
