Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Waggoner is a semi-rural hamlet several miles down river from New Orleans, nestled into one of the meanders of the mighty Mississippi and surrounded by forest wetlands and swamp. Al Bauer is a professor of Astronomy at a local university who directs a Junior Astronomical Society for Waggoner's children. The quest of his life has been to locate the specific phenomenon that caused the Star of Bethlehem, something he is convinced will be either a black hole or a pulsar left behind after a supernova event. The community he loves plans to put on a living Creche for their annual Christmas pageant but right away things start going wrong. Bauer loses his position at the university, The creche gets caught up in a legal quagmire, one of his junior astronomers runs away from home, and another, Peanut, who's already lost his mom, faces losing his pop. Carol Perilloux, alias Christmas Carol, a name not originally given as a compliment enters into a conspiracy with Bauer to help Peanut's family, and the end result is a meshing of the lives and adventures of all the major players in a delightfully inextricable way. It all culminates in a surprise conclusion for all the characters in this very Christmas tale. A Star for Waggoner is a true American Christmas Carol blending nostalgia of Christmases past with modern times. There are Christmas stories of historical fiction based on the factual Christmas Truce of 1914 at the outbreak of World War I, to one about a little old Cajun lady living alone in the swamp. One can hardly read the story and not come away with a renewed love for the Christmas season, and the spirit it brings. It is a story about love, about hope, and about faith, particularly the faith of one little boy that binds all of the events together.

Book excerpt: Cowboys of the historic Waggoner Ranch are living legends. They are men who embody the attributes of dusty riders who braved the wild a century ago. The cowboys ride a vast ranch, the largest in the United States within one fence. The 510,772-acre ranch, a couple of hours northwest of Dallas/Fort Worth, was established in 1854, only nine years after Texas joined the Union. Jeremy Enlow was granted rare access to photograph the twenty-six cowboys who ride the trails of their forebearers, living a life and practicing skills that have almost disappeared. It is important to record their lives before they shut the gate behind them the last time. This book is a tribute to the cowboys of the Waggoner Ranch.

Centuries ago, when Earth's Darkfolk -- vampires, werewolves, witches and other creatures -- were threatened by humanity, they departed our planet's dimension and journeyed to a shadowy realm, where they built the great city of Necropolis. Matthew Adrion is an Earth cop who came through a portal to Necropolis on a case, died, and was resurrected as a zombie. Unable to return home, he works as a private investigator on the very mean streets of this shadowy, dark city. Tim Waggoner lives in Ohio.

Stephen is, significantly, a time-obsessed writer who wishes to obtain the time-transcending status of an Ovid or a Homer. When the wider tale is examined in terms of Stephen's ambition, Ulysses emerges as, potentially, a "self-begetting" work - that is, the finished narration can be read as a creation of the aspiring writer featured within the narrative itself."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: A journey through the Christmases of yesteryear, with artwork, photos, magazine content, and others treasures of decades past. We all have memories of long-ago Christmases locked away in our hearts. This book explores—with vibrant period art, surprising facts, and excerpts from letters, diaries, and magazines through the decades—what the holiday was like from the 1920s through the 1960s. In Christmas Memories, Susan Waggoner, author of It’s a Wonderful Christmas and Under the Tree, looks at bygone holidays from the perspective of those who lived them. Beginning with “Christmas in the Melting Pot,” which depicts yuletide in the early 1920s, she presents detailed snapshots that re-create seasons past. She chronicles the gifts, activities, fads, and fancies that made each Christmas unique; indulges in fantasy shopping at yesterday’s prices; shares thoughts from letters, diaries, and magazines of the era; and makes the past come to life with vibrant period art that lets you revel in the irresistible nostalgia of Christmas memories.

Book excerpt: "In this illuminating, multi-pronged cultural and performance history of such phenomena as Chautauqua and radio, movies, and electrical technology, Timothy Raphael puts together a compelling and sometimes revelatory narrative of how commandingly Reagan mastered the matrix of performance, technology, media, celebrity, and the 'republic of consumption' he came of age in." ---Dana Nelson, Vanderbilt University "Garry Wills and others have written well on the phenomenon of Ronald Reagan, the actor-president, but this is the first book by a real authority---trained in performance and fully reflective about it from the inside . . . unquestionably an important contribution to the disciplinary fields of American studies and performance studies, and an important contribution to public affairs." ---Joseph Roach, Yale University When Ronald Reagan first entered politics in 1965, his public profile as a performer in radio, film, television, and advertising and his experience in public relations proved invaluable political assets. By the time he left office in 1989, the media in which he trained had become the primary source for generating and wielding political power. The President Electric: Ronald Reagan and the Politics of Performance reveals how the systematic employment of the techniques and technologies of mass-media performance contributed to Reagan’s rise to power and defined his style of governance. The President Electric stands out among books on Reagan as the first to bring the rich insights of the field of performance studies to an understanding of the Reagan phenomenon, connecting Reagan's training in electronic media to the nineteenth-century notion of the "fiat of electricity"---the emerging sociopolitical power of three entities (mechanical science, corporate capitalism, and mass culture) that electric technology made possible. The book describes how this new regime of cultural and political representation shaped the development of the electronic mass media that transformed American culture and politics and educated Ronald Reagan for his future role as president.
