Book Synopsis Towards the Day after Tomorrow by : P. H. Brazier

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humanity is moving ever towards its final destination without knowing why, when, where: teloi, multiple paths, leading towards God’s eschaton. These essays examine the movement towards this day of reckoning, and how such eschatological events are projected back into time. Towards the Day after Tomorrow, or the one after that, or months, decades—centuries—away, often we behave as though the end is upon us. These essays start with the beginning of the end: the incarnation. We examine the origins of Karl Barth’s realized eschatology in Expressionism. We consider death and judgment, as usurped by humanity, an eschaton without God’s forgiving judgment: multiple Holocausts. War ushers in the eschaton, but how do Christians handle conflict in the light of a redefined just war theory? We analyze the eschatological insights into humanity’s end in The Simpsons—post mortem. Consider the issue of atheistic human authorities usurping God’s judgment. Finally crisis and judgment are glimpsed in the mindset of people who suffer seizures—postlapsarian exile, the sufferance of salvation: how God blesses us despite the chaos of our human-generated teloi, in preparation for the end. As the end approaches, events become darker, chaotic, confusion reigns: “Judas immediately went out. And it was night.”

Book Synopsis Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow by : Roslyn Arlin Mickelson
Download or read book Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow written by Roslyn Arlin Mickelson and published by Harvard Education Press. This book was released on 2017-11-14 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow provides a compelling analysis of the forces and choices that have shaped the trend toward the resegregation of public schools. By assembling a wide range of contributors—historians, sociologists, economists, and education scholars—the editors provide a comprehensive view of a community’s experience with desegregation and economic development. Here we see resegregation through the lens of Charlotte, North Carolina, once a national model of successful desegregation, and home of the landmark Swann desegregation case, which gave rise to school busing. This book recounts the last forty years of Charlotte’s desegregation and resegregation, putting education reform in political and economic context. Within a decade of the Swanncase, the district had developed one of the nation’s most successful desegregation plans, measured by racial balance and improved academic outcomes for both black and white students. However, beginning in the 1990s, this plan was gradually dismantled. Today, the level of resegregation in Charlotte has almost returned to what it was prior to 1971. At the core of Charlotte’s story is the relationship between social structure and human agency, with an emphasis on how yesterday’s decisions and actions define today’s choices.
Book Synopsis How Far It Is to Tomorrow... by : Nikita N. Moiseev
Download or read book How Far It Is to Tomorrow... written by Nikita N. Moiseev and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-07 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a translated autobiography of applied mathematician N. N. Moiseev, providing an insider’s view of the history of the Soviet Union from its founding in 1917 to its collapse in 1991, as well as a little of the aftermath. We see vividly the precariousness of life just after the October Revolution; his happy family life during the years 1921-28 of Lenin’s New Economic Policy; the subsequent destruction of his family by Stalin’s regime; his trials as a social outcast; his student days at Moscow State University; his experiences as a Soviet Air Force Engineer in World War II, including sorties as a gunner and a brush with an NKVD agent; post-war euphoria, marriage, and another round of ostracism; and then the vicissitudes of a highly varied academic career. Here we meet many famous Soviet and Western engineers and scientists. The last several chapters are devoted more to wide-ranging reflections on God, philosophy, science, communism, modelling the biosphere, and the threat of nuclear winter. His thoughts concerning the impending and then final collapse of the USSR, as well as hopes for Russia’s future, conclude the journey through Moiseev's life.
