Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Spiritual Aeneid And if in the course of this book I quote too freely, as I have quoted just now, from the poem which is its title, it is because the Aeneid travelled with me in the last two months before the end of my journey, and I read it, as Christians used to, with something like a demand for spiritual comfort. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Virgil's Aeneid: Book III Long ago, before the time when Saul was king over Israel, it is said that a ten year's war was waged, in which the Greeks sought to take the city. Of Troy. Troy was situated in the north-western corner of Asia Minor, at the foot of Mount Ida, and was inhabited by a people connected with the Phrygians Of Asia Minor, under the rule of a family of kings descended from Teucer. Those who came against them, lived in Greece, one of the sunniest and most pleasant parts of the world, including with the mainland all the islands both to the east and to the west. The Greeks and the Trojans seem to have been very much alike in most ways. Their armor and method of warfare were alike, they seemed to be able at all times to understand each other's speech, and their manners, customs, and religion are represented as being in most points identical. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eighth Book of Virgil's Aeneid: Edited for the Use of Schools The advisability of including selections from the later books of the Aeneid in the reading even of classes that are to translate not more than six books of the poem, will hardly be questioned. The difference in character between the first six books and the last six is marked, and has often been pointed out; the former, as a story of adventure, being compared to the Odyssey, and the latter, as a narrative of war and conquest, to the Iliad. Some acquaintance with the second half of the poem is obviously essential to an adequate appreciation of the poem as a whole. Again, that part of the Aeneid which deals with Italy and the subjugation of the native races has quite as important a bearing on the main purpose of the poem the celebration of the origin and historic career of the Roman nation as that which has to do with the fate of Troy and the wanderings of Aeneas. Perhaps, too, not the least significant of the reasons which might be urged in favor of an occasional excursion into the field of the later books is to be found in the fact that such excursions afford relief to the teacher from the monotony of carrying successive classes, year after year, over exactly the same ground, while they give to his work a positive zest which is sure to react with happy effect on his pupils. Of the later books of the Aeneid, none is better fitted to engage the pupil's attention than the eighth. The exceptional freedom of the text from doubtful readings, the interest with which the characters, both leading and minor, are invested, the charm of the story, the wealth of mythological and historical allusion, and the significant relation which this part of the poem bears to the general plan of the whole, combine to give this book a special claim to recognition. The story of Hercules and Cacus puts into concrete form the traditions current in the poet's time of the barbarism which characterized pre historic Italy; Evander, the hero of the book, is the most gracious personality in the entire poem, worthy, as the type of knightly courtesy, simple dignity, and manly fortitude, of a place beside Sir Guyon of the Faery Queene the shield of Aeneas, with its prophetic pictures of scenes and characters from legendary and contem poraneous history, carries the reader into the very heart of Roman life and thought and aspiration, revealing the source and embodying the spirit of Roman nationality and patriotism. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aeneid of Virgil: Translated Into English Verse Greeks, and his poems bear eloquent testimony to the profound impression made upon him by his reading of the Greek poets. His first important work, the Eeloguee, was. Directly inspired by the pastoral poems of Theocritus, from whom he borrowed not only much of his imagery but even whole lines in the Georgie: he took as his model the Warts and Day: of Hesiod, and though in the former case it must be confessed that he suffers from the weakness inherent in all imitative poetry, in the latter he far surpasses the slow and simple verses of the Boeotian. But here we must guard ourselves against a misapprehen sion. We moderns look askance at the writer who borrows without acknowledgment the thoughts and phrases of his forerunners, but the Roman critics of the Augustan Age looked at the matter from a different point of view. They regarded the Greeks as having set the standard of the highest possible achievement in literature, and believed that it should be the aim of every writer to be faithful, not only to the spirit, but even to the letter of their great exemplars. Hence It was only natural that when Virgil essayed the task of writing the national Epic of hu country, he should be studious to embody In his work all that was best in Greek Epic poetry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Virgil's Aeneid: With Explanatory Notes The publication and extensive introduction of the excellent Latin Grammar of Professor Harkness has created a demand for an edition of the Aeneid, with references to the new grammar. While the editor has endeavored in the present edition to meet this demand by adding to the notes copious references to Harkness' Latin Grammar, he has also embraced the opportunity to subject the text as well as the notes to a careful revision. In particular he has thought it best to depart from the punctuation of Jahn's text so far as to substitute the comma for the stronger punctuation of Jahn in separating the protasis from the aprodosis. It is hoped that the second edition will thus be found worthy at least of the favor which has been so kindly extended to the first.
