Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is written to provide a qualitative introduction, appropriate for a general science audience, to the application of pragmagnetic resonance to the determination of biomolecular dynamics. The work is also intended as a reference resource for those pursuing or contemplating research in the hydrodynamics. The work is also intended as a reference resource for those pursuing or contemplating research in the hydrodynamic characterization of components of Biosystems. Thus, the Introduction, Theory, and Methodology sections involve presentations at two levels a pictorial and intuitive presentation for the generalist and a quantitative presentation for the specialist. The sections on applications provide a critical discussion of both pure and applied research applications which yields insights into both the capabilities and limitations of the methodology. The applications sections are also of interest from the standpoint of the detailed characterization of certain Biosystems, such as erythrocytes, which have evolved from EPR measurements.

Book excerpt: Spin Labeling: Theory and Applications covers the background, theory, and applications of spin labeling. The book starts by providing an introduction about electron spin resonance in biology and a reporter group technique of spin labelling. The text then describes the principles and theories of magnetic resonance; the theory of slow tumbling ESR spectra for nitroxides; and the influence of electron-electron interactions on the appearance of the electron resonance spectrum. The chemistry of spin labels; the molecular structures of nitroxides; the instrumental aspects of spin labeling; as well as the use of spin labels for studying the structure and function of enzymes are also considered. The book further discusses spin-label-induced nuclear magnetic resonance relaxation studies of enzymes; anisotropic motion in liquid crystalline structures; and the use of oriented lipid systems as model membranes. The text also looks into the application of lipid spin labels in biological membranes as well as the molecular motion in biological membranes. Chemists, molecular biologists, chemical physicists, people involved in the study of physical spectrometry, and graduate students taking related courses will find the book invaluable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside flap of this volume.

Book excerpt: Rapid developments in analytical techniques and the use of modern reagents in organic synthesis during the last two decades have revolutionized the approach to organic structure determination. As advanced topics in organic analysis such as spectroscopic methods are being introduced, postgraduate students (majoring in organic chemistry) have been feeling handicapped by the non-availability of a book that could uncover various aspects of qualitative and quantitative organic analysis. This book is written primarily to stimulate the interest of students of organic chemistry and pharmaceutical sciences in organic analytical chemistry. Key features: Identification and characterization of organic compounds by classical methods Mechanism of various reactions involved in the detection of functional groups and their derivatization Functional groups interfering with a given test procedure Identification of organic compounds by spectral methods (IR, UV, NMR and Mass Spectrometry) Chemical analysis by other instrumental techniques-Atomic emission spectroscopy, Electron spin resonance spectroscopy, Atomic absorption spectroscopy, flnorimetry & Phosphorimetry, Flame photometry and X-ray methods General techniques for separation and purification including Gas Chromatography and HPLC Preparation of organic compounds based on important name reactions and pharmaceutical properties Mechanism of the reactions involved in the synthesis Simple analytical techniques and specific methods of quantitative elemental, functional groups and biochemical estimations Composite spectral problems Incorporating ample modern techniques of organic analysis, this book will be of great value to graduate & postgraduate students, teachers and researchers in the field of organic chemistry and pharmaceutical sciences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of any new and effective therapy is soon followed by large numbers of publications in which the indications and benefits are explored critically. It is not unexpected, therefore, that within five years of the first Bermuda Symposium on advances in parenteral nutrition that a second Symposium was considered appropriate to review progress and explore new areas of investigation, as well as enlarging the scope of the meeting to include enteral nutrition. The rate of progress can be judged by the number of subjects which were not discussed at the first Symposium. For example, home parenteral nutrition, computer assisted assessment and prescribing, Studies of body protein synthesis and breakdown and the role of branched-chain amino acids are all new subjects for this Symposium which were not covered at all in the first meeting. Much progress has also been made to our understanding of the biochemi cal complications of parenteral nutrition and the problems related to long term access to the circulation. Nutritional care has become safer and more effective. There is an increasing awareness of the difficulties in making a true nutritional assessment in selecting patients for total parenteral nutrition and more attention has also been focussed on different approaches to enteral support in the management of undernourished patients. There is also continuing debate on the cost effectiveness of this expensive method of treatment and critics look in vain for evidence of efficacy based on controlled trials in specific groups of patients.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present here the second issue devoted entirely to the spin-labeling technique as part of Biological Magnetic Resonance. Volume 14 commemorates a modifi- tion in our editorial policy with the retirement of my esteemed coeditor, Jacques Reuben. From thisjuncture into the future, each issue will focus on some special topic in magnetic resonance. Each volume will be organized in most cases by guest editors, for example forthcoming issues will address the following topics: in vivo magnetic resonance (P. Robitaille and L. J. Berliner, eds. ) Modern techniques in proton NMR ofproteins (R. Krishna and L. J. Berliner, eds. ) Instrumental techniques of EPR (C. Bender and L. J. Berliner, eds. ) Thecurrent volume, Spin Labeling: The NextMillennium, presents an excellent collection of techniques and applications that evolved during the past decade since the last volume, volume 8 (1989). Someobvious omissions, such as multiquantum EPR and very high-frequency FT-ESR were unfortunately not possible for this volume. Perhaps they will appear in Spin Labeling: 2001. Lastly it is a pleasure to honor two scientists whose contributions were both pioneering and pivotal to the spin label technique: Professor Eduard G. Rozantsev (Moscow), whose synthetic feats in nitroxyl chemistry set the broad stage for a versatile catalog of labels; and Professor Harden M. McConnell, last year's Int- national ESR (EPR) Society Gold Medalist, who conceived and developed the spin label technique to address many biological problems (proteins, enzymes, m- branes, cells, immune response, etc. ).
