Book excerpt: Raman Spectroscopy and its Application in Nanostructures is an original and timely contribution to a very active area of physics and materials science research. This book presents the theoretical and experimental phenomena of Raman spectroscopy, with specialized discussions on the physical fundamentals, new developments and main features in low-dimensional systems of Raman spectroscopy. In recent years physicists, materials scientists and chemists have devoted increasing attention to low-dimensional systems and as Raman spectroscopy can be used to study and analyse such materials as carbon nanotubes, quantum wells, silicon nanowires, etc., it is fast becoming one of the most powerful and sensitive experimental techniques to characterize the qualities of such nanostructures. Recent scientific and technological developments have resulted in the applications of Raman spectroscopy to expand. These developments are vital in providing information for a very broad field of applications: for example in microelectronics, biology, forensics and archaeology. Thus, this book not only introduces these important new branches of Raman spectroscopy from both a theoretical and practical view point, but the resulting effects are fully explored and relevant representative models of Raman spectra are described in-depth with the inclusion of theoretical calculations, when appropriate.

Book excerpt: A single wall carbon nanotube (SWNT) is a new form of carbon, whose atomic arrangement is equivalent to a graphene sheet rolled into a cylinder in a seamless way. The typical diameter of a SWNT ranges from 0.6 nm to several nm and the typical length ranges from tens of nm to several cm. Due to its small diameter and high aspect ratio, a SWNT has very unique electronic and vibrational properties. The goals of this thesis work are to design and construct a Raman instrument capable of obtaining signals from many different types of individual SWNTs, to develop methods and tools to collect, organize and analyze large amounts of Raman spectra from them, to use resonant Raman spectroscopy to characterize individual SWNTs, and to investigate how their electronic and vibrational properties change under various conditions, such as strain, or different substrate interactions. A high-efficiency widely-tunable Raman instrument is developed for the study of SWNTs. The environmental effects on the electronic and vibrational properties are investigated by suspended SWNTs. Using the high-efficiency Raman instrument, weak optical transitions of metallic SWNTs are found. The effect of strain on the vibrational mode frequencies of SWNTs are studied.

Book excerpt: This work reports the results of two studies which use resonance Raman scattering to evaluate the vibrational properties of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). In the first study, we report an evaluation of second-order combination and over-tone modes in highly ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG), in SWNT bundles, and in isolated SWNTs. We found both dispersive and non-dispersive Raman bands in the range 1650-2100 cm−1, and we show that the appearance and frequency vs. laser energy E[laser] behavior of these features are in agreement with predictions from double resonance Raman theory. In the case of SWNTs, these second-order bands depend on the one-dimensional structure of SWNTs, and, at the single nanotube level, the spectra vary from tube to tube, depending on tube diameter and chirality, and on the energy of the van Hove singularity relative to E[laser]. In the second study, we present a theoretical method of predicting, to within a linear constant [beta], the frequency shift in the Raman features of a SWNT material as the Fermi level is changed by depletion or addition of electrons. This constant is then evaluated for different Raman modes in SWNTs by comparing theoretical predictions to experimental observations by Corio et al., where the Fermi level of SWNT bundles is raised by electrochemical doping and Raman spectra are collected in situ. It is determined that for the G-band of SWNTs, the dependence of frequency on Fermi energy is /[beta][sub]G = 271cm−1 per hole per C-atom for metallic SWNTs with d[sub]f [approximately]= 1.25 ± 0.20nm.

Book excerpt: A thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) reactor was built and used to grow vertically and horizontally aligned carbon nanotube arrays. The as-grown nanotubes were investigated on a single tube level using near-infrared photoluminescence (PL) microscopy and PL excitation spectroscopy as well as Raman, atomic force and scanning electron microscopy. The PL of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) in different surroundings and at temperatures down to 4 K was analyzed. Ultralong CVD-grown nanotubes were imaged on Si/SiO2 to determine their chirality and to check structural integrity along the nanotube length. Furthermore, ultralong SWNTs were manipulated (moved, bent and fractured) employing an AFM. Finally, a new approach to determine relative abundances and PL quantum yields of semiconducting SWNTs in dispersions is presented, which is based on statistical counting of individual nanotubes by means of PL spectroscopy.

Book excerpt: Since their discovery more than a decade ago, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have held scientists and engineers in captive fascination, seated on the verge of enormous breakthroughs in areas such as medicine, electronics, and materials science, to name but a few. Taking a broad look at CNTs and the tools used to study them, Carbon Nanotubes: Properties and Applications comprises the efforts of leading nanotube researchers led by Michael O’Connell, protégé of the late father of nanotechnology, Richard Smalley. Each chapter is a self-contained treatise on various aspects of CNT synthesis, characterization, modification, and applications. The book opens with a general introduction to the basic characteristics and the history of CNTs, followed by discussions on synthesis methods and the growth of “peapod” structures. Coverage then moves to electronic properties and band structures of single-wall nanotubes (SWNTs), magnetic properties, Raman spectroscopy of electronic and chemical behavior, and electromechanical properties and applications in NEMS (nanoelectromechanical systems). Turning to applications, the final sections of the book explore mechanical properties of SWNTs spun into fibers, sidewall functionalization in composites, and using SWNTs as tips for scanning probe microscopes. Taking a fresh look at this burgeoning field, Carbon Nanotubes: Properties and Applications points the way toward making CNTs commercially viable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metallic carbon nanotubes are one dimensional conductors that are both technologically promising for electronic applications, and scientifically interesting for studying the physics of low dimensional materials. In this thesis, we present a detailed study of the inelastic light scattering (Raman) spectrum of individual metallic carbon nanotubes, with a focus on the influence of electronic excitations and charged carriers. We have demonstrated that the frequency and linewidth of certain phonon modes of metallic carbon nanotubes depend strongly the Fermi energy, because they couple strongly to low lying electron hole pairs. Next, we report the first experimental observation of electronic Raman scattering in carbon nanotubes. This observation demonstrates that the same electron-hole pairs that participate in damping the optical phonons of metallic carbon nanotubes, may themselves scatter light, thus giving rise to an electronic Raman spectrum. An analysis of the Fermi level and laser energy dependence of the electronic Raman and phonon Raman contributions allows us to explain the asymmetric lineshape of the G-band phonon modes in terms of a Fano interference. In another experiment, we have shown that the charge-induced expansion and contraction of the the graphitic C-C bond length is different for metallic and semiconducting nanotubes. Finally, we have measured the Stokes and antiStokes intensities of the Raman modes in electrically contacted metallic nanotubes in order to determine their phonon populations during high-field electrical transport. The experiments reported here, have helped to clarify the origin of several features in the Raman spectra of metallic carbon nanotubes that have been heavily debated in recent years. These result also shed light on the way electronic excitations and charged carriers affect the physical properties of metallic carbon nanotubes.
