There was that little brush at Fort Necessity last year, from which they brought away nothing but their skins, and damned glad they were to do that. They brought away their arms, I cried hotly, and would have brought away all their stores and munitions, had the French kept faith and held their Indians off. That, too, in face of an enemy three times their number. The Virginians have no cause to blush for their conduct at Fort Necessity. The Coldstreams could have done no better. Allen laughed again. Ah, pardon me, Stewart, he said contemptuously, I forgot that you were present on that glorious day. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. One winter, in the South, I had for my neighbor a gentle, little brown-haired lady, who spent many evenings at my fireside, as I at hers, where with bits of needlework in our hands we gossiped away as women will. I discovered in her an unconscious heroine, and her Civil War experiences made ever an interesting topic. Wishing to share with others the reminiscences she gave me, I seek to present them here in her own words. "

This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Civil War classic of soldiering in the ranks debunks all the romantic notions of war. Like his Northern counterpart, the Confederate soldier fought against bullets, starvation, miserable weather, disease, and mental strain. But the experience was perhaps even worse for Johnny Reb because of the odds against him. Never as well equipped and provisioned as the Yankee, he nevertheless performed heroically. Carlton McCarthy, a private in the Army of Northern Virginia, describes the not-always-regular rations, various improvisations in clothing and weaponry, campfire entertainments, the jaunty spirits and the endless maneuvering of the men in gray. Real but forgotten faces are glimpsed momentarily in famous battles, and the tramp of feet on the way to Appomattox is heard. Detailed Minutiae of Soldier Life does for the Confederate side what John Billings’s Hardtack and Coffee, also a Bison Book, does for the Northern. David Donald wrote in the New York Herald Tribune that McCarthy’s book, too, was "as fresh, as amusing, and as revealing" as the day it was first published in 1882. In a new introduction Brian S. Wills considers the book’s niche in Civil War literature.

Book excerpt: "The story is extremely powerful. The soldier of Virginia relates his own romance, interwoven with the story of Braddock's disastrous campaign....the love story is delicate, in keeping with the best customs of the times." -Chicago Banker "An historical romance of the time of Braddock's ill-fated expedition to Fort Duquesne. The hero, a Virginian, is much in love with a girl whose guardians do not favor his suit, and so the current of his true love is anything but smooth. He enlists as a soldier under Washington, and is detained long in the field in the midst of perils of hardships. Sometimes fate gives him a sight of the heroine, but there are long stretches of hope deferred. At last he has the good fortune to be the defender against an Indian attack of a fort in which are the heroine and her guardians. His valor and resourcefulness save the fort, and he keeps the savages at bay until relief arrives. The guardians change their minds....Mr. Stevenson shows a thorough knowledge of the period to which his story relates; he draws the character of Washington admirably, and depicts him with fine historic justice; his hero and heroine are effectively presented and are uncommonly attractive; and the style of the book is worthy of the strong, high-toned, very readable story it tells." -Publishers Weekly "It's chief interest centers about Braddock's ill-fated expedition, and the savage strategy which struck with panic and disaster his unfortunate followers. Colonel Washington figures pleasantly in this narrative, although the post of hero is reserved for his imaginary friend Stewart, who takes an active part in the campaign, and at once wins military renown and the love of the charming heroine." -The Spectator "A striking picture of Washington in his young manhood, also a delightful picture of early Virginia life." -Louisville Times CONTENTS I.
