Book excerpt: The complexity of engineering systems has increased to the extent that the interactive use of computers in their design has become more or less indispensable. Current methods of heuristic design parameter adjustment, via interactive computing, are relatively ineffective. The research covered by this report was aimed at developing a powerful, general purpose, optimization-based computer-aided engineering system design methodology. The generality of our approach is made possible by the fact that a large variety of engineering design problems are transcribable into the form of a very small number of standard, semi-infinite optimization problems, and because new system theoretic results facilitate the use of optimization in engineering design. The reported research can be divided into three parts: the first was concerned with the development of semi-infinite optimization algorithms for engineering design, the second one was devoted to the development of system theoretic results which facilitate the use of optimization in control system design, and the third one was devoted to the development of an interactive software system which provides an appropriate environment for optimization-based computer-aided design. To this end, research was carried out in three areas: (i) the development of a theory of nondifferentiable optimization algorithms for the solution problems with max type inequality constraints, (ii) the exploration of efficient design parametrization and initialization techniques in optimization-based control system design, and finally, (iii) the development of interactive software for optimization-based control system design. As a result of this research, two students will receive their Ph. D. degrees in November, 1986 two students are are halfway through their doctoral research projects, and our interactive optimization-based design system DELIGHT. MIMO was completed. It is currently being installed in alpha sites for testing and evaluation. The Michelson Laboratory in China Lake is one such test site.

These are essential constituents of the iterative process, leading to a feasible and, one hopes, optimal design. 1.3 Content of the Book In Chapter 2 we present briefly the history of CAD. The main components of CAD systems are identified, and their principal functions described. Economi cal and interdisciplinary aspects are discussed. Chapter 3 starts with a systems analysis of the design process. The notion of a process is introduced as a fundamental tool to describe activities like design as a whole, computer-aided design, program executions, terminal sessions etc. The environment and the resources which the environment must supply for the successful execution of any process are discussed. The problem of modelling the design objects in an abstract schema and the interrelation between the schema and the planning of the individual step in the design are analysed. Chapter 4 concentrates on the interfaces among the components of a CAD system, including the human operator. The problem of mapping an abstract schema onto the capabilities of various programming, command, or data de scription languages is described in detail. Emphasis is laid upon the resource aspect and its influence on the design of CAD systems. The concept of a CAD software machine is introduced, and rules for designing such machines are given.

CAD is considered in this book as a discipline that provides the required know-how in computer hardware and software, in systems analysis and in engineering methodology for specifying, designing, implementing, introducing, and using computer based systems for design purposes. The first chapter gives an impression of the book as a whole, and following chapters deal with the history and the components of CAD, the process aspect of CAD, CAD architecture, graphical devices and systems, CAD engineering methods, CAD data transfer, and application examples. The flood of new developments in the field and the success of the first edition of this book have led the authors to prepare this completely revised, updated and extended second edition. Extensive new material is included on computer graphics, implementation methodology and CAD data transfer; the material on graphics standards is updated. The book is aimed primarily at engineers who design or install CAD systems. It is also intended for students who seek a broad fundamental background in CAD.

Ten years ago, analog seemed to be a dead-end technology. Today, System-on-Chip (SoC) designs are increasingly mixed-signal designs. With the advent of application-specific integrated circuits (ASIC) technologies that can integrate both analog and digital functions on a single chip, analog has become more crucial than ever to the design process. Today, designers are moving beyond hand-crafted, one-transistor-at-a-time methods. They are using new circuit and physical synthesis tools to design practical analog circuits; new modeling and analysis tools to allow rapid exploration of system level alternatives; and new simulation tools to provide accurate answers for analog circuit behaviors and interactions that were considered impossible to handle only a few years ago. To give circuit designers and CAD professionals a better understanding of the history and the current state of the art in the field, this volume collects in one place the essential set of analog CAD papers that form the foundation of today's new analog design automation tools. Areas covered are: * Analog synthesis * Symbolic analysis * Analog layout * Analog modeling and analysis * Specialized analog simulation * Circuit centering and yield optimization * Circuit testing Computer-Aided Design of Analog Integrated Circuits and Systems is the cutting-edge reference that will be an invaluable resource for every semiconductor circuit designer and CAD professional who hopes to break the analog design bottleneck.
