Abstract: With the advancement of design and fabrication of high-performance integrated circuits technology, it is foreseeable that processors with more than 1,000 cores per die will appear in the near future. However, these many-core architectures have introduced a lot of challenges at the memory system level, such as complicated cache coherence and limited memory access speed, to name a few. This thesis focuses on one prominent many-core prototype - the Intel's Single-chip Cloud Computer (SCC). The SCC architecture does not provide hardware cache coherency. Instead, it relies on on-chip programmable memory. The baseline coherence protocol for the SCC is the Software Managed Coherence (SMC) layer. To achieve memory consistency, it accesses shared memory without part of the typical cache hierarchy for efficient invalidation and flushing. We found that performance provided by this coherence layer in this manner is sub-optimal because accesses of shared memory would all turn into data update messages within the network mesh. As cache locality could not be exploited to its full potential, the execution pipelines stall much often for memory fetches from outside the chip. This research is to address the performance problem of shared virtual memory consistency for this cache in-coherent architecture. Oriented at sitting data on-chip as much as possible to reduce memory accesses external to the chip, we propose two techniques to leverage the cache hierarchy to full and reside data in the on-chip scratchpad memory. First, targeted at the architectural specificity of the hardware, we redesigned traditional software distributed shared memory (SDSM) to allow shared data be treated transparently like private memory so the cache hierarchy can be fully utilised without sacrificing memory consistency. Second, we propose a distance-aware page allocation scheme that samples access frequencies and select the most frequently-recently used pages to be stored on the on-chip scratchpad memory. Our experimental results show that our first technique, the ordinary SDSM outperforms the current SMC approach by 5 times. Moreover, in some cases, with the second technique that is based on scratchpad memory, our proposed system outperforms further by an additional 1.57 times. Our experiments also demonstrated that the SMC approach is not scalable due to congestion of the network mesh by coherence traffic generated while the two new approaches continued to scale well. The main contribution of this research is the implementation of a cache coherence software library system built for an architecture that comes with non-coherent cache hardware and just relies on software-defined cache. This new cache hierarchy has evidently opened the door for smarter and faster inter-processor-core data sharing without the need of complicated cache coherence hardware. Book excerpt: Abstract: "The recent spurt in the popularity of message-passing (distributed memory) massively parallel machines for providing high performance at relatively low costs has caused researchers to look for avenues aimed at easing the programming inconveniences associated with these machines. The Shared Virtual Memory (SVM), which provides a single coherent address space across all computing nodes, is one such approach. This research was aimed at the design and implementation of an SVM system for hypercube multicomputers. We have verified our design ideas through an implementation on the nCUBE 2 hypercube multicomputer. This system is implemented at the user level (as a software layer between the kernel and the user program) in a C programming environment using high level constructs to support data sharing. Shared variables are treated as objects rather than pages. We have improved upon an existing algorithm for maintaining coherency in the SVM system, thus achieving a reduction in the number of inter-node messages required in coherency maintenance. Detailed timing analysis is conducted to analyze the feasibility of this shared environment. Experimental results indicate that parallel programs running under the SVM system show linear speedup, suggesting that SVM systems could provide an effective programming environment for the next generation of distributed memory parallel computers. Two bottlenecks of this implementation have been identified. First, expensive interrupt handling by the nCUBE 2 kernel makes asynchronous message reception very slow, thus increasing the latency in all shared memory operations. Second, extremely slow disk access makes disk swapping virtually useless for high performance application."

Exploiting commutativity has historically been a fruitful avenue to reduce traffic and serialization. This is because commutative operations produce the same final result regardless of the order they are performed in, and therefore can be processed concurrently and without communication. Unfortunately, software techniques that exploit commutativity, such as privatization and semantic locking, incur high runtime overheads. These overheads offset the benefit and thereby limit the applicability of software techniques. To avoid high overheads, it would be ideal to exploit commutativity in hardware. In fact, hardware already provides much of the functionality that is required to support commutativity For instance, private caches can buffer and coalesce multiple updates. However, current memory hierarchies can understand only reads and writes, which prevents hardware from recognizing and accelerating commutative operations. The key insight this thesis develops is that, with minor hardware modifications and minimal extra complexity, cache coherence protocols, the key component of communication and synchronization in shared-memory systems, can be extended to allow local and concurrent commutative operations. This thesis presents two techniques that leverage this insight to exploit commutativity in hardware. First, Coup provides architectural support for a limited number of single-instruction commutative updates, such as addition and bitwise logical operations. CouP allows multiple private caches to simultaneously hold update-only permission to the same cache line. Caches with update-only permission can locally buffer and coalesce updates to the line, but cannot satisfy read requests. Upon a read request, Coup reduces the partial updates buffered in private caches to produce the final value. Second, CoMMTM is a commutativity-aware hardware transactional memory (HTM) that supports an even broader range of multi-instruction, semantically commutative operations, such as set insertions and ordered puts. COMMTM extends the coherence protocol with a reducible state tagged with a user-defined label. Multiple caches can hold a given line in the reducible state with the same label, and transactions can implement arbitrary user-defined commutative operations through labeled loads and stores. These commutative operations proceed concurrently, without triggering conflicts or incurring any communication. A non-commutative operation (e.g., a conventional load or store) triggers a user-defined reduction that merges the different cache lines and may abort transactions with outstanding reducible updates. CouP and CoMMTM reduce communication and synchronization in many challenging parallel workloads. At 128 cores, CouP accelerates state-of-the-art implementations of update-heavy algorithms by up to 2.4x, and COMMTM outperforms a conventional eager-lazy HTM by up to 3.4x and reduces or eliminates wasted work due to transactional aborts.
