Book excerpt: This thesis proposes a three-level DC-to-DC converter with capacitive output filter and its extension to single-phase, single-stage, three-level AC-to-DC converter with capacitive output filter. The AC-to-DC converter integrates a three-level boost converter operating in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) and a three-level half-bridge DC-to-DC converter with capacitive output filter. The steady-state operation of the DC-to-DC converter and AC-to-DC converter with capacitive output filter are studied with phase-shifted gating scheme. The three-level topology reduces the voltage rating of the switches to half of the input voltage. Soft-switching is achieved for switches at different load and input voltage conditions. Boost section of the AC-to-DC converter achieves automatic power factor correction (PFC). At reduced load and higher input voltage conditions, the line current Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) increases with phase-shifted gating scheme. The THD has been reduced by using a complementary PWM gating control in the AC-to-DC converter.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents the operation, analysis, simulation and experimental results of a single-phase single-stage soft-switched high frequency (HF) transformer isolated ac-to-dc bridge converter with low total harmonic distortion (THD) and its extension to ac-to-dc multiphase converter. A single-phase single-stage soft-switched ac-to-dc bridge converter cell has been proposed based on a new gating scheme. Due to the discontinuous current mode (DCM) operation of the boost inductor, natural power factor correction and low THD are ensured. The single-stage ac-to-dc multiphase converter is realized based on this bridge converter cell to reduce HF harmonic components in the line current. The steady-state operation of the single-stage bridge converter is explained for all operating modes. Intervals of operation in these modes are identified and analyzed. The steady-state solutions are presented. Based on these solutions, design curves are obtained. Design example of a 1.7 kW converter is presented to illustrate the design procedure. Operational characteristics are obtained for different line and load conditions. PSPICE simulation results for the designed converter are presented. An experimental prototype is built to verify the operation and performance of the converter. All four switches in the fixed frequency bridge converter undergo soft switching (common switch requires an auxiliary circuit) for a wide line and load range. A single-stage HF transformer isolated ac-to-dc multiphase converter is proposed. The analyses of the single-stage bridge converter cell are extended to the multiphase converter. It is shown that N = 3 is near the optimum number of cells to reduce the input current HF harmonic components. A design example of a 166 to 260 V (rms) input, 420 V output, 5 kW converter switching at 50 kHz is presented. PSPICE simulation results are obtained for the designed converter to study its performance for varying load and line conditions. A 3-cell 1.5 kW experimental prototype is built and experimental results are obtained. All the results show that HF harmonics in the line current are reduced and output voltage ripple frequency is increased. Each cell handles equal power and all bridge-switches are soft switched. As a result, uniform thermal distribution is obtained. Small-signal analysis of the single-stage ac-to-dc bridge converter cell is presented for all operating modes using state-space averaging technique. Based on this analysis, small signal transfer functions are obtained. Frequency response of the transfer functions are plotted using MATLAB program and verified by PSPICE simulation results. A closed loop control system is designed and frequency response of the overall loop gain is presented. Large-signal transient behavior of the converter cell is studied with open loop using PSPICE simulation program for step change in line and load conditions. The simulation results show that the closed loop system is required to improve the converter performance during step increase in line voltage.

Book excerpt: In this dissertation, two high-frequency (HF) transformer isolated single-stage integrated ac-dc converters are proposed for a small scale permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) based wind energy conversion system (WECS). These two types of single-stage integrated ac-dc converters include expected functions of HF isolation, power factor correction (PFC), and output regulation in one single-stage. Fixed-frequency phase-shift control and soft-switching operation are employed in both proposed ac-dc converters. After reviewing the literature and discussing pros and cons of the existing topologies, it is preferred that three identical single-phase single-stage integrated converters with interleaved connection configuration are suitable for the PMSG. For the single-phase converter, two new HF isolated single-stage integrated resonant ac-dc converters with fixed-frequency phase-shift control are proposed. The first proposed circuit is HF isolated single-stage integrated secondary-side controlled ac-dc converter. The other proposed circuit is HF isolated single-stage dual-tank LCL-type series resonant ac-dc converter, which brings better solutions compared to the first converter, such as high power factor and low total harmonic distortion (THD) at the ac input side. Approximate analysis approach and Fourier series methods are used to analyze these two proposed converters. Design examples for each one are given and designed converters are simulated using PSIM simulation package. Two experimental circuits are also built to verify the analysis and simulation. The simulated and experimental results reasonably match the theoretical analysis. Then the proposed HF isolated dual-tank LCL-type series resonant ac-dc converter is used for three-phase interleaved connection in order to satisfy requirements of PMSG based WECS. A design example for this three-phase interleaved configuration is given and simulated for validation under several operating conditions.

Book excerpt: This book presents novel contributions in the development of solid-state-transformer (SST) technology both for medium-voltage (MV) and low-voltage (LV) utility grid interfaces, which can potentially augment the grid modernization process in the evolving power system paradigm. For the MV interface, a single-stage AC-DC SST submodule topology has been proposed, and its modulation and soft-switching possibilities are analysed, experimentally validated and adequately benchmarked. A control scheme with power balance capability among submodules is developed for MV grid-connected single-stage AC-DC SST for smooth operation under inevitable parameter drift scenario, and experimental validation shows excellent performance under drastic load change conditions. A novel machine learning-aided multi-objective design optimization framework for grid-connected SST is developed and experimentally validated, which equips a power electronics design engineer with meagre computational resources to find out the most optimal SST design in a convenient time-frame. This book has also contributed towards the development of dual-active-bridge (DAB)-type and non-DAB-type LV grid-interfaced isolated AC-DC converters by providing solutions to specific topology and modulation-related shortcomings in these two types of topologies. A comprehensive comparison of the DAB and non-DAB-type LVAC-LVDC converters reveals the superiority of DAB-type conversion strategy.

Book excerpt: The use of single-phase line-interfaced power converters in electrical power systems is rapidly growing due to the changing nature and power quality requirements of electrical loads. Most applications require these single-phase line-interfaced power converters to be compact and efficient, and depending on application meet additional performance, cost, and reliability targets. This thesis presents innovative system architectures, circuit topologies, design methodologies, and control strategies for highly compact and efficient single-phase ac-dc and ac-ac line-interfaced power converters. First, a comprehensive design methodology for step-down isolated two-stage ac-dc converters is presented which compares various designs and operating modes and selects the optimal design based on overall volume and efficiency. Additionally, a new control strategy is presented for a compact front-end soft-switched power-factor correction (PFC) stage to ensure compliance with strict electromagnetic interference (EMI) regulations. A 1-kW universal-input to 28 V-output isolated ac-dc prototype converter is built to showcase performance benefits of proposed design and control strategies. This prototype achieves a high-power-density of 84W/in3 and maintains greater than 93% efficiency across a wide output power range. Next, the functionality of the proposed ac-dc converter is further enhanced by incorporating a new droop control strategy for parallel operation of multiple similar ac-dc converter modules. The proposed control strategy uses the input current of the secondary dc-dc stage of two-stage ac-dc converters in conjunction with variable droop resistance to achieve near-perfect parallel operation. A multi-module ac-dc conversion system is built to validate the proposed droop control strategy. The parallel modules achieve a current distribution error of less than 2% near their maximum output power. Multiple ac-ac conversion applications are also addressed in this thesis. For highly cost-sensitive applications, two compact and efficient single-stage ac-ac converters are presented which utilize a comprehensive design methodology centered around minimizing the total cost of components. Moreover, innovative control strategies are presented for both ac-ac converters to enable output voltage regulation under input voltage and output load fluctuations. Both single-stage ac-ac prototype converters, utilizing the proposed design and control strategies, are built and tested. The 600-W 480 Vrms to 264 Vrms prototypes achieve power densities exceeding 40W/in3 while maintaining conversion efficiencies of greater than 96% across majority of the output load. Finally, a much more feature-rich ac-dc-ac converter is also proposed for advanced ac-ac conversion applications, such as data center online uninterruptible power supplies (UPS). The proposed transformer-less two-stage ac-ac converter is based on a new circuit topology which can operate at high switching frequencies (up to several MHz) and utilize 50% lower dc-bus capacitance than conventional split-dc-bus topologies. A 1-k VA 120 Vrms prototype ac-dc-ac converter is built and extensively tested to showcase performance improvements. This prototype achieves high peak conversion efficiency of greater than 95% and high power density of 26.4W/in3 while utilizing long-life but relatively bulky film dc-bus capacitors.

Book excerpt: Two-stage single-phase converters, including two-stage single-phase dc-ac inverters and two-stage single-phase PFC converters, are interfacing power converters between dc and ac voltage/current sources, which have been widely applied for dc-ac and ac-dc power conversion. For the two-stage single-phase converter, the ac-side power pulsates at twice the ac voltage frequency, resulting in second harmonic current (SHC) which might flow into the dc-dc converter, the dc voltage source, and dc load. This book clarifies the generation, propagation, and side-effects of this SHC and proposes the SHC reduction control schemes for the dc-dc converter, with different topologies and/or different operating modes, in the single-phase converter. On this basis, the second harmonic current compensator (SHCC) is proposed to compensate the SHC, significantly reducing the dc bus capacitance. In doing so, the electrolytic capacitors, with short lifetimes, are removed from the two-stage single-phase converter, leading to extended system lifetime and enhanced system stability. For having flawless SHC compensation performance, the port-current control schemes are proposed for the SHCC. Additionally, the stability analysis is carried out for the two-stage single-phase converter with the addition of SHCC. This book is a monograph combining theoretical analysis and engineering design, which could not only be a reference book for master students, Ph.D. students, and teachers majoring in power electronics but also be a handbook for the electrical engineers working on the research and development of LED drivers, EV on-board chargers, railway auxiliary power supplies, aviation power supplies, renewable energy generation systems, etc.

Book excerpt: This thesis investigates the possibilities for increasing the power conversion efficiency and power density of a single-phase single-stage AC-DC converter with power factor correction capability. Initially, the limitations are investigated for simultaneous increase of power density and efficiency in hard switched bidirectional converters. The switching frequency dependent turn-on losses of the transistors have been identified as the main limiting factor. In order to avoid the increase in total power losses with increasing the switching frequency, a control approach is proposed for achieving zero voltage switching transitions within the entire operating range of a bidirectional converter that utilizes power transistors in a bridge structure. This approach is based on operation in the discontinuous conduction mode with a variable switching frequency. Operation in the discontinuous conduction mode ensures the necessary reversed current that naturally discharges the parasitic output capacitance of the transistor and thus allows this transistor to be turned on at zero voltage. On the other hand, the varying switching frequency ensures that the converter operates close to the zero voltage switching boundary, which is defined as the minimum required current ripple at which zero voltage switching can be maintained. Operation with the minimum required current ripple is desirable as it generates the lowest magnetic core losses and conduction losses within the power circuit. The performance and effectiveness of the investigated approach were initially verified in a bidirectional DC-DC converter. A reliable zero voltage switching was confirmed over the entire operating range of a bidirectional DC-DC converter, as well as the absence of the reverse recovery effect and the unwanted turn-on of the synchronous transistor. In order to justify its usage and demonstrate its superior performance, the proposed zero voltage switching technique was compared with a conventional continuous conduction mode operation which is characterized by hard switching commutations. After successful verification and implementation in a bidirectional DC-DC converter, the investigated zero voltage switching approach was adapted for usage in an interleaved DC-AC converter with power factor correction capability. Comprehensive analysis of the converter's operation in discontinuous conduction mode with a variable switching frequency was performed in order to derive its power loss model. The latter facilitated the design process of the converter's power circuit. A systematic approach for selecting the converter's power components has been used while targeting for an extremely high power conversion efficiency over a wide operating range and a low volume design of the converter. The final result of the investigations performed within the scope of this thesis is the interleaved AC-DC converter with power factor correction capability. Utilization of interleaving allows for increasing the converter's power processing capability, reduces the conducted differential mode noise and shrinks the range within which the switching frequency has to vary. The proposed zero voltage switching control approach was entirely implemented within a digital signal controller and does not require any additional components within the converter's circuit. The experimental results have confirmed highly efficient operation over a wide range of operating powers. A peak efficiency of 98.4 % has been achieved at the output power of 1100 W, while the efficiency is maintained above 97 % over the entire range of output powers between 200 W and 3050 W.
