Book Synopsis The Changing Language Roles and Linguistic Identities of the Kashmiri Speech Community by : M. Ashraf Bhat
Download or read book The Changing Language Roles and Linguistic Identities of the Kashmiri Speech Community written by M. Ashraf Bhat and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-06-23 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book operates from the premise that linguistic identities are important because they make sense to people, are meaningful, and have an impact on the thinking and behaviour of individuals and groups, both overtly and covertly. The framework outlined here synthesises key works on linguistic identity and draws together insights from a range of disciplines, such as sociolinguistics, linguistic anthropology, discourse analysis, cognitive sciences, and social psychology. It investigates linguistic assertions of community identity in the multilingual context of the Kashmir region in India, by studying the dimensions of changing language roles and linguistic practices in relation to the process of creating and maintaining new linguistic identities under different circumstances. It examines the nature of changing language roles as a combination of several linguistic and extra-linguistic factors, which include script uncertainty, interlingual diglossia, language attrition, language policies of the state, collective attitudes towards language(s), corresponding speech communities, intergenerational transmission, and instrumental orientation, among others. It demonstrates that changes in role are principally motivated by various factors, which may lead to the demise of the distinct symbol and roots of the Kashmiri linguistic-cultural identity in favour of the non-native code, Urdu, which could emerge as the primary linguistic identity in the near future.

Download or read book A Sociolinguistic Survey of Pashtu Community in Present Day Kashmir written by Neelofar Wani and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-04 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of this study was to understand the sociolinguistic situation of Pashtu community in present day Kashmir. Other objective was to understand the impact of Urdu and Kashmiri on Pashtu. The study was aimed at a comprehensive sociolinguistic account of Pashtu speakers in Kashmir valley. The study examined various features associated with the Pashtuns of Kashmir. As a minority community Pashtuns have been living in Kashmir from past 150 years and have been successful somehow in settling as groups in various districts of Kashmir valley. Inspite of being a minority community, Pashtuns have maintained their language and culture and have kept themselves distinct from the mainstream society. In this sociolinguistic study, it was interesting to note that Pashtuns in Kashmir although very conscious about Pashtu language and identity have somehow been influenced by their contact with Kashmiri majority in particular and the global society in general. This study has shown that education among youth is fostering positive attitudes towards the use of Kashmiri and Urdu.

Book Synopsis Kashmir's Right to Secede by : Matthew J. Webb
Download or read book Kashmir's Right to Secede written by Matthew J. Webb and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-02-13 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A separatist conflict has been ongoing in India-administered Kashmir since 1989. Focusing on this region, this book critiques the existing normative theories of secession, and offers a comprehensive examination of the right of sub-groups to secede. The book looks at the different accounts of the moral right to secede, and assesses both the theories themselves as well as the claims of those who want to separate Kashmir from India. Included within this analysis are the three main types of normative theory that ground the right of groups to secede in principles of national self: determination, consensual governance and rectificatory justice. Previous studies have discussed the causes behind the uprising in Kashmir against Indian authority and examined some of the legal and geo-political implications of the conflict for India and the wider region. This book provides a new way of looking at the Kashmir dispute, by asking what these theories tell us about Kashmir, and in turn what the example of Kashmir allows us to learn about these theories. It is of interest to students and scholars of South Asian Politics and International Relations.

Book excerpt: The Indo-Aryan languages are spoken by at least 700 million people throughout India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and the Maldive Islands. They have a claim to great antiquity, with the earliest Vedic Sanskrit texts dating to the end of the second millennium B.C. With texts in Old Indo-Aryan, Middle Indo-Aryan and Modern Indo-Aryan, this language family supplies a historical documentation of language change over a longer period than any other subgroup of Indo-European. This volume is divided into two main sections dealing with general matters and individual languages. Each chapter on the individual language covers the phonology and grammar (morphology and syntax) of the language and its writing system, and gives the historical background and information concerning the geography of the language and the number of its speakers.
