Book Synopsis A Very Social Time by : Karen V. Hansen
Download or read book A Very Social Time written by Karen V. Hansen and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karen Hansen's richly anecdotal narrative explores the textured community lives of New England's working women and men—both white and black—n the half century before the Civil War. Her use of diaries, letters, and autobiographies brings their voices to life, making this study an extraordinary combination of historical research and sociological interpretation. Hansen challenges conventional notions that women were largely relegated to a private realm and men to a public one. A third dimension—the social sphere—also existed and was a critical meeting ground for both genders. In the social worlds of love, livelihood, gossip, friendship, and mutual assistance, working people crossed ideological gender boundaries. The book's rare collection of original writings reinforces Hansen's arguments and also provides an intimate glimpse into antebellum New England life.
Book Synopsis A Social Dreaming Experience at the Time of COVID 19 by : Elisabetta Pasini
Download or read book A Social Dreaming Experience at the Time of COVID 19 written by Elisabetta Pasini and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-12-09 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book describes the experience of four Social Dreaming Matrices held online between March and May 2020, during the first lockdown caused by the Covid 19 emergency. The pandemic isolated us and imposed prolonged contact with ourselves and our solitary thoughts. Against this backdrop, there was hope for change, a desire for a different kind of sociability and different forms of intimacy. On the basis of this evidence, our research supports the shift "from experiencing trauma to reacting to trauma", looking at a collective traumatic experience not only as something to be overcome but as an opportunity for a transformation that changes our mental schemes in relation to the external context. We have identified Social Dreaming as a privileged technique to overcome a collective traumatic experience, supporting its elaboration through collective feelings, new connections between intuition and rational thought, the discovery of community meanings. The authors's thesis is that the much-needed transition from 'magical thinking' to 'transformative thinking' takes place in a setting that is able to contain the anxieties of life's transitional phases, supporting the creation of new rituals and new social bonds and sustaining the passage from “me” to a “wider we”.
Book Synopsis Concepts and paradigms in operative, strategic and social time management by : Willi Darr
Download or read book Concepts and paradigms in operative, strategic and social time management written by Willi Darr and published by tredition. This book was released on 2020-02-25 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of this book is a subject-specific business discussion on the paradigms of time management. The time itself is not tradable, not storable and also not purchasable to acquire. Time cannot be heard, smelled, tasted or felt. Nevertheless, it is omnipresent for all persons in companies as well as in private life. This book deals with a special question for companies: the paradigms in time management. The term "paradigm" was chosen in order to express the fundamental, generally prevailing and no longer to be discussed opinion on predefined questions, here the temporal arrangement in enterprises. They reflect a generally accepted consensus on what solutions should be found for certain issues. In terms of time, the paradigm is that "acceleration" is the only direction underlying time management. It seems to be a kind of one-way street. In other words, ever faster means ever more successful or ever better. Three special categories of time management and their respective paradigms are discussed in this book: The first category considers time as a measure of efficient operational business processes. So, time has an operative value. The second category regards time as an expression of sustainable competitive strategy and as an opportunity to take a unique position towards competitors. In other words, time has a strategic value. The third category considers time as a measure of the demarcation and characterization of societies. This time management of all people involved in a society does not pass our social developments by without a trace; on the contrary, it strongly shapes them. "Time" in the meaning of a modern spirit makes a clear mark on all of us. I.e., time has a social value.

Book excerpt: Coming on the eve of the Indian elections of 2009, The Measure of Time in the Appraisal of Social Reality is a timely and an explosive expose of what went wrong in Indian developmental planning. Focussing on the land, caste and gender issues, and advocating a place-time-people based research agenda, the Measure of Time is a scathing critique of how the elite nexus between politics and academic neo colonialism has subverted the course of genuine development in India. This is a must read for those who wish to understand contemporary India.
