Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An easy-to-grasp introduction to nonparametric regression This book's straightforward, step-by-step approach provides an excellent introduction to the field for novices of nonparametric regression. Introduction to Nonparametric Regression clearly explains the basic concepts underlying nonparametric regression and features: * Thorough explanations of various techniques, which avoid complex mathematics and excessive abstract theory to help readers intuitively grasp the value of nonparametric regression methods * Statistical techniques accompanied by clear numerical examples that further assist readers in developing and implementing their own solutions * Mathematical equations that are accompanied by a clear explanation of how the equation was derived The first chapter leads with a compelling argument for studying nonparametric regression and sets the stage for more advanced discussions. In addition to covering standard topics, such as kernel and spline methods, the book provides in-depth coverage of the smoothing of histograms, a topic generally not covered in comparable texts. With a learning-by-doing approach, each topical chapter includes thorough S-Plus? examples that allow readers to duplicate the same results described in the chapter. A separate appendix is devoted to the conversion of S-Plus objects to R objects. In addition, each chapter ends with a set of problems that test readers' grasp of key concepts and techniques and also prepares them for more advanced topics. This book is recommended as a textbook for undergraduate and graduate courses in nonparametric regression. Only a basic knowledge of linear algebra and statistics is required. In addition, this is an excellent resource for researchers and engineers in such fields as pattern recognition, speech understanding, and data mining. Practitioners who rely on nonparametric regression for analyzing data in the physical, biological, and social sciences, as well as in finance and economics, will find this an unparalleled resource.

Book excerpt: We propose three statistics for testing that a predictor variable has no effect on the response variable in regression analysis. The test statistics are integrals of squared derivatives of various orders of a periodic smoothing spline fit to the data. The large sample properties of the test statistics are investigated under the null hypothesis and sequences of local alternatives and a Monte Carlo study is conducted to assess finite sample power properties.

Book excerpt: Tests based on regression spline are developed in this chapter for testing nonparametric functions in nonparametric, partial linear and varying-coefficient models, respectively. These models are more flexible than linear regression model. However, one important problem is if it is really necessary to use such complex models which contain nonparametric functions. For this purpose, p-values for testing the linearity and constancy of the nonparametric functions are established based on regression spline and fiducial method. In the application of spline-based method, the determination of knots is difficult but plays an important role in inferring regression curve. In order to infer the nonparametric regression at different smoothing levels (scales) and locations, multi-scale smoothing methods based on regression spline are developed to test the structures of the regression curve and compare multiple regression curves. It could sidestep the determination of knots; meanwhile, it could give a more reliable result in using the spline-based method.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, there has been a great deal of interest and activity in the general area of nonparametric smoothing in statistics. This monograph concentrates on the roughness penalty method and shows how this technique provides a unifying approach to a wide range of smoothing problems. The method allows parametric assumptions to be realized in regression problems, in those approached by generalized linear modelling, and in many other contexts. The emphasis throughout is methodological rather than theoretical, and it concentrates on statistical and computation issues. Real data examples are used to illustrate the various methods and to compare them with standard parametric approaches. Some publicly available software is also discussed. The mathematical treatment is self-contained and depends mainly on simple linear algebra and calculus. This monograph will be useful both as a reference work for research and applied statisticians and as a text for graduate students and other encountering the material for the first time.

Book excerpt: An exploration of the use of smoothing methods in testing the fit of parametric regression models. The book reviews many of the existing methods for testing lack-of-fit and also proposes a number of new methods, addressing both applied and theoretical aspects of the model checking problems. As such, the book is of interest to practitioners of statistics and researchers investigating either lack-of-fit tests or nonparametric smoothing ideas. The first four chapters introduce the problem of estimating regression functions by nonparametric smoothers, primarily those of kernel and Fourier series type, and could be used as the foundation for a graduate level course on nonparametric function estimation. The prerequisites for a full appreciation of the book are a modest knowledge of calculus and some familiarity with the basics of mathematical statistics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book builds on John Fox′s previous volume in the QASS Series, Non Parametric Simple Regression. In this monograph readers learn to estimate and plot smooth functions when there are multiple independent variables. While regression analysis traces the dependence of the distribution of a response variable to see if it bears a particular (linear) relationship to one or more of the predictors, nonparametric regression analysis makes minimal assumptions about the form of relationship between the average response and the predictors. This makes nonparametric regression a more useful technique for analyzing data in which there are several predictors that may combine additively to influence the response. (An example could be something like birth order/gender/and temperament on achievement motivation). Unfortunately, researchers have not had accessible information on nonparametric regression analysis, until now. Beginning with presentation of nonparametric regression based on dividing the data into bins and averaging the response values in each bin, Fox introduces readers to the techniques of kernel estimation, additive nonparametric regression, and the ways nonparametric regression can be employed to select transformations of the data preceding a linear least-squares fit. The book concludes with ways nonparametric regression can be generalized to logit, probit, and Poisson regression.

Book excerpt: About three years ago, an idea was discussed among some colleagues in the Division of Statistics at the University of California, Davis, as to the possibility of holding an international conference, focusing exclusively on nonparametric curve estimation. The fruition of this idea came about with the enthusiastic support of this project by Luc Devroye of McGill University, Canada, and Peter Robinson of the London School of Economics, UK. The response of colleagues, contacted to ascertain interest in participation in such a conference, was gratifying and made the effort involved worthwhile. Devroye and Robinson, together with this editor and George Metakides of the University of Patras, Greece and of the European Economic Communities, Brussels, formed the International Organizing Committee for a two week long Advanced Study Institute (ASI) sponsored by the Scientific Affairs Division of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The ASI was held on the Greek Island of Spetses between July 29 and August 10, 1990. Nonparametric functional estimation is a central topic in statistics, with applications in numerous substantive fields in mathematics, natural and social sciences, engineering and medicine. While there has been interest in nonparametric functional estimation for many years, this has grown of late, owing to increasing availability of large data sets and the ability to process them by means of improved computing facilities, along with the ability to display the results by means of sophisticated graphical procedures.
