Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several different scenarios for neutrino scattering experiments using a neutrino beam from the muon collider complex are discussed. The physics reach of a neutrino experiment at the front end of a muon collider is shown to extend far beyond that of current neutrino experiments, since the high intensity neutrino beams one would see at the muon collider allow for a large flexibility in choosing neutrino targets. Measurements of quark spin, A-dependence of the structure function xF3 and neutral current chiral couplings to quarks are outlined.

Book Synopsis Particles and Nuclei by : Bogdan Povh
Download or read book Particles and Nuclei written by Bogdan Povh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-10-10 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To cope with modern developments, especially in nuclear physics research, this textbook presents nuclear and particle physics from a unifying point of view. The first part, Analysis, is devoted to disentangling the substructure of matter. The second part, Synthesis, shows how the elementary particles may be combined to build hadrons and nuclei. A section on neutrino oscillations and one on nuclear matter at high temperatures bridge the field of "nuclear and particle physics" and "modern astrophysics and cosmology". New developments are also covered. This concise text has become a standard reference for advanced and undergraduate courses.
Book Synopsis Deep Inelastic Scattering by : Robin Devenish
Download or read book Deep Inelastic Scattering written by Robin Devenish and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2011-04-28 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an up-to-date, self-contained account of deep inelastic scattering in high-energy physics, intended for graduate students and physicists new to the subject. It covers the classic results which led to the quark-parton model of hadrons and the establishment of quantum chromodynamics as the theory of the strong nuclear force, in addition to new vistas in the subject opened up by the electron-proton collider HERA. The extraction of parton momentum distribution functions, a key input for physics at hadron colliders such as the Tevatron at Fermi Lab and the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, is described in detail. The challenges of the HERA data at 'low x' are described and possible explanations in terms of gluon dynamics and other models outlined. Other chapters cover: jet production at large momentum transfer and the determination of the strong coupling constant, electroweak interactions at very high momentum transfers, the extension of deep inelastic techniques to include hadronic probes, a summary of fully polarised inelastic scattering and the spin structure of the nucleon, and finally a brief account of methods in searching for signals 'beyond the standard model'.
Book Synopsis From Parity Violation to Hadronic Structure and more by : Serge Kox
Download or read book From Parity Violation to Hadronic Structure and more written by Serge Kox and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-06-07 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost 50 years after the proposal of Lee and Young in 1956 to test the hypothesis of parity violation in weak interactions and the subsequent experimental verification of parity violation by C. S. Wu, parity violation has today become a useful property of weak interactions. This is due to the fact that the focus nowadays has changed: parity violation in weak interactions is no more a topic of investigation but is used as a tool in many different fields ranging from nuclear physics to the search for the hidden extra dimensions requested by string theory. For our first workshop which took place June 5-8, 2002, at the Institut fiir Ke- physik of the Johannes Gutenberg-Universitat Mainz, we concentrated on the in vestigation of the strangeness contribution in the nucleon. This book contains the refereed and selected papers of the second workshop "From Parity Violation to Hadron Structure and more (Part II)", which took place June 8-11, in the Labo- toire de Physique Subatomique et de Cosmologie, in Grenoble. These papers appear in EPJAdirect, the electronic-only part of EPJA, and they are accessible without restrictions. They will also appear in printed form and can be ordered through Springer. The excellent presentations show the dramatic and steady progress in the accuracy of measured parity violating asymmetries over the last few years.
Book Synopsis Deep Inelastic Positron-Proton Scattering in the High-Momentum-Transfer Regime of HERA by : Ulrich F. Katz
Download or read book Deep Inelastic Positron-Proton Scattering in the High-Momentum-Transfer Regime of HERA written by Ulrich F. Katz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-07-01 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About three decades after the first experiments on deep inelastic lepton hadron scattering began to investigate the structure of hadrons, the history of this fruitful field of particle physics continues in the broad spectrum of research performed at the electron and positron proton collider HERA at DESY, where the multipurpose detectors ZEUS and H1 access ep scattering at a center of mass energy of 300 GeV and explore as yet uncharted kinematic realms of deep inelastic scattering. After the first years of data taking at HERA, each of the experiments has collected a total of roughly 40 pb 1 of e+p data, yielding sensitivity to deep inelastic e+p interactions at high four momentum transfers, Q2, where typi cal cross sections drop into the subpicobarn regime. This kinematic domain is characterized by electroweak unification, manifesting itself most markedly in the neutral and charged current cross sections, which approach an equal order of magnitude as Q2 rises above the square of the W and Z masses. Consequently, HERA allows, for the first time, studies of both types of pro cesses simultaneously with the same initial state conditions and in the same detector, and thus we can investigate the interplay of electroweak and strong forces governing the respective cross sections.

Book Synopsis Measurement of Muon Neutrino Quasi-Elastic-Like Scattering on a Hydrocarbon Target at ${\bf E_{\nu}} \sim $ 6 GeV. by :
Download or read book Measurement of Muon Neutrino Quasi-Elastic-Like Scattering on a Hydrocarbon Target at ${\bf E_{\nu}} \sim $ 6 GeV. written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The MINERA Experiment (Main Injector Experiment $\nu$ -A interaction) is a highly segmented detector of neutrinos, able to record events with high precision using the NuMI Beam (Neutrino Main Injector) at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. In this thesis, we present the rst measurement of the charged current quasi-elastic-like interaction on polystyrene scintillator (CH) in the MINERA detector at neutrino energies around 6 GeV. The dataset used was taken between 2013 and 2014 with a total of 1:17 x $10^{21}$ protons on target. The interactions were selected by requiring a negative muon, a reconstructed and identied proton, no michel electrons in the nal state (in order to get rid of soft pions decaying) and a low calorimetric recoil energy away from the interaction vertex. The nal measurement reported is a dierential cross section in terms of the muon quadratic transfered energy $Q^{2}$.
