Excerpt: ...against each other, amidst the reciprocities, the fair exchanges, and the civilizing intercourse which a true commerce and trade engender among nations. He has no objection to gold and silver coin being also a "legal tender," as well as paper. It is so in France. The objection that "it will set up three standards for the payment of debts," and the injustice to the creditor by the fluctuations in value of either standard, is more than met by the fact that gold and silver, as the present monev of the world, do not fluctuate much, except as the currents of the world's commerce ebb and flow; and this cannot be controlled by Government, but must be guarded against by a domestic paper currency, from leaving us with too little money at any time to do business with; while the paper can be made of stable value by proper Government regulation and the " interconvertible bond." Making gold and silver coin a legal tender will tend to enhance their value among us, encourage the production of gold and silver, in which the country is very rich, and equalize our exchanges with foreign nations more, by furnishing them what they now desire the most, in exchange for their commodities. " Justice and equal rights " is Mr. Cooper's motto in the public administration of Government;--no monopolies, and no special or class legislation. " All laws should be general laws." So far from giving occasion and instruments to the selfishness, or greed, or love of power of individuals and classes, Government is espesially constituted to keep an even balance among the rights of the people, and not only protect their lives and property from the violence that springs from such passions, but from the cunning devices of law and vested privileges by which the few, often take away...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born after the Revolution, the first generation of Americans inherited a truly new world--and, with it, the task of working out the terms of Independence. Anyone who started a business, marketed a new invention, ran for office, formed an association, or wrote for publication was helping to fashion the world's first liberal society. These are the people we encounter in Inheriting the Revolution, a vibrant tapestry of the lives, callings, decisions, desires, and reflections of those Americans who turned the new abstractions of democracy, the nation, and free enterprise into contested realities. Through data gathered on thousands of people, as well as hundreds of memoirs and autobiographies, Joyce Appleby tells myriad intersecting stories of how Americans born between 1776 and 1830 reinvented themselves and their society in politics, economics, reform, religion, and culture. They also had to grapple with the new distinction of free and slave labor, with all its divisive social entailments; the rout of Enlightenment rationality by the warm passions of religious awakening; the explosion of small business opportunities for young people eager to break out of their parents' colonial cocoon. Few in the nation escaped the transforming intrusiveness of these changes. Working these experiences into a vivid picture of American cultural renovation, Appleby crafts an extraordinary--and deeply affecting--account of how the first generation established its own culture, its own nation, its own identity. The passage of social responsibility from one generation to another is always a fascinating interplay of the inherited and the novel; this book shows how, in the early nineteenth century, the very idea of generations resonated with new meaning in the United States.

Book excerpt: On May 11, 1911, the New York Public Library opened its “marble palace for book lovers” on Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street. This was the city’s first public library in the modern sense, a tax-supported, circulating collection free to every citizen. Since before the Revolution, however, New York’s reading publics had access to a range of “public libraries” as the term was understood by contemporaries. In its most basic sense a public library in the eighteenth and most of the nineteenth centuries simply meant a shared collection of books that was available to the general public and promoted the public good. From the founding in 1754 of the New York Society Library up to 1911, public libraries took a variety of forms. Some of them were free, charitable institutions, while others required a membership or an annual subscription. Some, such as the Biblical Library of the American Bible Society, were highly specialized; others, like the Astor Library, developed extensive, inclusive collections. What all the public libraries of this period had in common, at least ostensibly, was the conviction that good books helped ensure a productive, virtuous, orderly republic—that good reading promoted the public good. Tom Glynn’s vivid, deeply researched history of New York City’s public libraries over the course of more than a century and a half illuminates how the public and private functions of reading changed over time and how shared collections of books could serve both public and private ends. Reading Publics examines how books and reading helped construct social identities and how print functioned within and across groups, including but not limited to socioeconomic classes. The author offers an accessible while scholarly exploration of how republican and liberal values, shifting understandings of “public” and “private,” and the debate over fiction influenced the development and character of New York City’s public libraries in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Reading Publics is an important contribution to the social and cultural history of New York City that firmly places the city’s early public libraries within the history of reading and print culture in the United States.

This study argues that the transition of the United States from an agrarian economy in 1790 to an industrial leader in 1865 relied fundamentally on the spread of technological knowledge within and across industries.
