This book was released on 2008-12-30 with total page 667 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistical models attempt to describe and quantify relationships between variables. In the models presented in this chapter, there is a response variable (sometimes called dependent variable) and at least one predictor variable (sometimes called independent or explanatory variable). When investigating a possible cause-and-effect type of relationship, the response variable is the putative effect and the predictors are the hypothesized causes. Typically, there is a main predictor variable of interest; other predictors in the model are called covariates. Unknown covariates or other independent variables not controlled in an experiment or analysis can affect the dependent or outcome variable and mislead the conclusions made from the inquiry (Bock, Velleman, & De Veaux, 2009). A p value (p) measures the statistical significance of the observed relationship; given the model, p is the probability that a relationship is seen by mere chance. The smaller the p value, the more confident we can be that the pattern seen in the data 2 is not random. In the type of models examined here, the R measures the prop- tion of the variation in the response variable that is explained by the predictors 2 specified in the model; if R is close to 1, then almost all the variation in the response variable has been explained. This measure is also known as the multiple correlation coefficient. Statistical studies can be grouped into two types: experimental and observational.

Download or read book A Silk Purse from a Sow's Ear written by Mischka Zakharin and published by University Editions. This book was released on 1999-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Publisher's description: A Silk Purse From a Sow's Ear is an enthralling blend of real life experiences, mixed with a nearly surrealistic sense of fantasy; at times, a warm and tender reflection of emotional and intellectual expression-- at other times, an absurd uprising of grand jocundity. Mishka Zakharin offers his unique perspectives on a variety of subjects, from the bitterness of unrequited love, to the passions of untamed sexuality; from life and death and the nature of the universe, to the sometimes blatantly disgusting functions of the human condition. Providing substance that is both darkly philosophical and divinely loopy-- an odd juxtaposition of spiritual wisdom and somewhat psychotic musings-- A Silk Purse From a Sow's Ear has a bit of something for just about everyone.

Book excerpt: At the 2019 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, TODAY show anchor, Al Roker, had a hilarious run-in with a giant stick of butter that sent social media into a frenzy. With #butterman trending on Twitter, celebrities and noncelebrities alike remarked on the scene, which for many was the highlight of the parade. From that event, Donny Willis (a.k.a. the "Butter Man") has been featured on the TODAY show and a variety of other media outlets. Borrowing from that experience and many others in his life, Donny seeks to answer questions like: Can big dreams actually become reality? If so, do we just stumble into these dreams, or can we do something to nudge them along? Is it just sheer luck, or is there a science to making dreams come true? As you walk alongside Donny on his journey unveiling the growth cycle of a dream, you will discover practical ideas you can apply to your own life as you head toward a butter tomorrow.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Making of Silk Purses From Sows' Ears: A Contribution to Philosophy When the time comes for it to make the Great Change, to transform itself from a gluttonous worm into a winged moth, to cease its gross existence as a creeping thing and to enter into an aerial life, to sip honey and to make love, it requires an envelope for hiding, for a dark and secret place, according to the command of Nature. From certain glands at the back of its head it ejects two minute threads of a viscous liquid which become coated with another secretion flowing from two other convenient glands, and these two little streams are thus cemented to a double strand.
