Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moses: His Life and Times The materials for a life of Moses are found chiefly in the four later Books of the Pentateuch. The New Testament also contributes some valuable notices, especially Acts vii. and Hebrews xi. Next to them in value, but next at an interval that is scarcely measurable, come the accounts given by Josephus and Philo. Moses is the hero of Josephus's Second, Third, and Fourth Books, which present to us the circumstances of his life with a considerable amount of detail, but do not add very much to the scriptural narrative, except at the two extremes of Moses career, his early years and his decease. Different estimates may be formed of the degree of credit to be attached to these portions of Josephus's history, and it requires, beyond a doubt, much critical acumen to deal with them properly, neither accepting nor rejecting them en bloc. The same may be said of the notices to be found in the writings of Philo. Philo has left us a work entitled, "The Life of Moses" (ITepi Bloy Mwoewç), which contains interesting accounts of his education and personal appearance; and in several of his other treatises he gives estimates of Moses' character and abilities. A passage of Artapanus, preserved by Eusebius, is entitled to consideration. Many legends have clustered round the name of Moses, some Jewish, others Mahometan; but these are almost wholly worthless, and throughout the following pages, excepting in a single instance, no notice has been taken of them. The writer's strong conviction has been that it is from Scripture, almost entirely, if not entirely, that we must learn the facts of Moses' life, and deduce our estimate of his character. He believes that in the four later Books of the Pentateuch we have an actual, though not an intentional, autobiography. Join pastor and bestselling author Charles Swindoll as he explores the life and legacy of Moses, a man of selfless dedication. In Great Lives: Moses, the fourth book in his bestselling Great Lives series, Swindoll teaches us that our decision to go forward in life instead of retreating will be bolstered by studying the astonishing story of Moses. Swindoll gives us the facts based squarely on the truth revealed in God's Word. He also fills in the fine-line details of Moses' life with emotion and feeling, because Moses, like all of us, was a human being with faults and frailties. And finally, Swindoll helps us apply the lessons of Moses' life to our own daily dilemmas. From the Moses who tried to decline his assignment from God to the Moses who received the Ten Commandments, Swindoll shares his journey in a new light, inspiring you to: Find strength and confidence in God's power Embrace failure with grace Become a servant leader in your own life Come along with Swindoll as he invites you to travel far back to another place in another era--allowing us to focus our attention on one man's life, clinging closely to his side. Hopefully, as a result, our lives will never again be the same.

Book excerpt: Dr Coats, widely recognized for his work over two decades on the Pentateuchal traditions, here presents us with his distinctive portrait of Moses. George Coats identifies two strands in the Moses tradition, the tradition of the hero who represents the people of God, and that of the 'man of God', distinctly unheroic in folkloristic terms, who represents God to the people. This duality in the portrayal of Moses becomes evident already in the call narrative of Exodus 3, a narrative that should not be divided between J and E but reflects the most ancient perception of the character Moses and his significance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Moses Among the greatest men who lived in old times, was Mosns, the subject of this present history. He was one of the most extraor dinary characters of which we read in any book; and he lived in a, very extraordinary period, and in anextraordinary country. From his very infancy he was the subject of the most remarkable providences of God and through every year of his life, even to his death, every thing about him was remarkable. All this we shall, show our readers in the course of this narrative; and we hope that we shall be able to make a very interesting and useful book, because every thing we shall state ab'out Moses will be strictly true. We shall gather it all out of the Bible, which is God's holy book, and therefore must be true. There will be 'a great many curious and valu able things which we shall collect from other sources, in order to explain and illustrate the history; but for what we say of Moses we mean to take the Bible as our sole authority, and not to write one syllable which is con trary to any thing there said.
