Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short Treatise on the Different Methods of Investigating the Diseases of the Chest IN preparing for the American press the English translation of the well known and highly useful work of M. Collin, which translation has passed through three editions in England, the editor thinks he can ren der it more acceptable by dispensing with the various prefaces and introductory remarks which encumber the last edition; and by substituting in their place an entirely new introduction, which is intended to em brace the amount of all that is important in the prefaces alluded to, as well as that which is contained in various abstracts and reviews which have appeared of treatises upon the different methods of investigating thoracic diseases, and in some other works which are not gen erally before the profession in this country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Diseases of the Chest: Being a Course of Lectures Delivered at New York Hospital Tas Lectures on the Diseases of the Chest were published ten years since, in the New York Lancet, a weekly medical journal existing at that we. Being delivered extempore, and taken in shorthand, although by that excellent stenographer, the late Dr. Houston, then Editor of the Journal, they contained necessarily many imperfections, which, under other circum stances, might easily have been avoided. Soon after their publication, however, in this informal manner, the author re ceived repeated solicitations from his medical friends, that he wouldnevise the Lectures and publish thomin aseparate volume. This request he has complied with in the volume which he now o 'es's to the medical profession. The whole subject has been carefully revised, and the experience of ten years in Hospiml md in private practice has been added. Most of his protessional life the author has kept a register of the most im portant cases of chest disease that have fallen under his notice. And these have been numerous and ofien highly important. He has used them freely in the preparation of the present wk, and is happy in believing that his statements are founded upon registered and carefully observed facts, rather than upon vague recollections. His own opinions are embodied in the text: the opinions of authors, as well as such statistical informa. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Diseases of the Chest and on Mediate Auscultation To estimate fairly the correctness of M. Laennec's statements, we ought, also, to take into account his vast experience, and his unequalled practical tact, which was the admiration of every one who had opportunities of observing his examinations. In no case, even the most Obscure, did he shrink from pronouncing his opinions, and fixing his diagnosis; and rarely indeed was he mistaken. These circumstances ought to make his successors long hesitate before they call in question the correctness of his statements, even although they should fail to verify them, by repeated experience; and incline them rather to doubt their own capacity in exploring, and the accuracy or acuteness Of their perceptive powers, than the fidelity of the records which he has bequeathed to them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on the Physical Exploration of the Chest, and the Diagnosis of Diseases Affecting the Respiratory Organs An original feature of the work is the introduction of several signs produced by the whispered voice. These signs, as representing certain physical conditions, are generally available, and their char acters relating to pitch and quality are highly significant. The names exaggerated bronchial whisper, whispering bronchophony or bronchophonic whisper, and cavernous whisper, although, perhaps, not, intrinsically, the best which might have been devised, have the advantage of corresponding with the names commonly applied to correlative signs produced by the loud voice. The author would state, as a feature of the work, the recognition of the principle that the constancy of association of certain ab normal sounds with certain physical conditions constitutes the only reliable proof of the validity of the former as representing the latter. It is inconsistent with this principle to undertake to determine a priori signs to which certain physical conditions should give rise, and still more, on the other hand, to infer the existence of certain i physical conditions from certain abnormal sounds. As stated in the preface to the first edition, To the mechanism of physical phevi preface. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of the Chest and the Principles of Physical Diagnosis To write a practical book on the physical diagnosis of the heart and lungs in health and disease, has been the aim of the authors. We have attempted to omit everything not of practical diagnostic use, and to condense methods of secondary importance. More than is the custom has been written on the subject of diagnostic acoustics, because we believe that only through the comprehension of the laws of sound production and transmission can the results of percussion and auscultation be intelligently interpreted. We have endeavored to teach as much as possible by means of illustrations. Of these, many are photographs of frozen sections from the cadaver, previously hardened in formalin, so that the anatomic relations of the tissues remain as during life. We have found these specimens invaluable in our own teaching; and the book has been written in the hope that the photographic reproductions of our sections may be useful to others. We take pleasure in acknowledging our great indebtedness to Dr. George Fetterolf for the frozen sections; to Dr. J. Claxton Gittings for assistance in the preparation of the Section on Pediatrics; to Dr. Edward B. Krumbhaar for the Chapter dealing with the electrocardiogram; to Professor Richard Geigel, and to Dr. Charles M. Montgomery, from whose articles upon acoustics in diagnosis, much information has been gleaned. We are also indebted to Miss Eleanor A. Cantner for the production of some of our drawings. We are further under obligations to Professor William M. L. Coplin for permission to photograph numerous specimens in the Museum of Pathology of the Jefferson Medical College, as well as to Dr. David R. Bowen and to Dr. Henry K. Pancoast for our radiograms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Diagnosis of Diseases of the Chest: Based Upon the Comparison of Their Physical and General Signs In order to acquire the requisite knowledge of the physical signs, and of their relation to each other, as well as to the general symptoms, it is, in the first place, necessary to examine a well characterized ex ample of each sound, and to fix the recollection Of it as firmly as possible in the memory. After the signs have been learned, their relative importance is to be estimated, and they should then be compared with the general symptoms of the disease. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on the Diseases of the Lungs, and Heart: Including the Principles of Physical Diagnosis In the first of the two Parts, into which this work is divided, an attempt is made to describe the facts and principles of Physical Diagnosis in their applications to the Lungs, Heart, and great vessels. Although in the main confining himself to a description of physical signs, the Author has occasionally stepped aside to consider their mechanism, - yet not without the full consciousness, that in the present state of thoracic acoustics (and, indeed, of acoustics in general), all efforts of the kind must be merely tentative. If, on the one hand, the theories of the immortal discoverer of auscultation do not, in all instances, bear the test of clinical scrutiny, those of his German critics seem neither to be always in harmony with the principles of acoustics, nor accordant with the results of actual experiment. Whether such modifications as the Author has ventured to suggest in the theory of certain auscultatory signs, be of more satisfactory character, the verdict of his professional brethren can alone decide.
