Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report examines the impact of the Academy of Sciences on the development of technology in the Soviet Union. It finds that the future of Soviet technology depends significantly on the Academy and that severe problems stemming from its nature and its relationship with Soviet industry encumber the Academy's ability to serve Soviet technology. The Academy's importance derives from its unique position of national leadership in planning, coordinating, and performing R & D and from the fact that it is expected to help solve the problems affecting Soviet industrial innovation. The Academy's statutes identify it as a scientific institution dedicated to the independent pursuit of knowledge, i.e., basic research. However, the Academy's effective contribution to technological development requires a substantial departure from the statutory mission of basic research in favor of more-or-less direct involvement with industry, particularly in the successive stages of the research, development, and innovation (RDI) cycle. Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive directory and bibliographic guide to Russian archives and manuscript repositories in the capital cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg. It is an essential resource for any researcher interested in Russian sources for topics in diplomatic, military, and church history; art; dance; film; literature; science; ethnolography; and geography. The first part lists general bibliographies of relevant reference literature, directories, bibliographic works, and specialized subject-related sources. In the following sections of the directory, archival listings are grouped in institutional categories. Coverage includes federal, ministerial, agency, presidential, local, university, Academy of Sciences, organizational, library, and museum holdings. Individual entries include the name of the repository (in Russian and English), basic information on location, staffing, institutional history, holdings, access, and finding aids. More comprehensive and up-to-date than the 1997 Russian Version, this edition includes Web-site information, dozens of additional repositories, several hundred more bibliographical entries, coverage of reorganization issues, four indexes, and a glossary.

Every subject in the common timetable is covered, and teaching methods, hopes for the future and continuing controversies are discussed. All this is set in the broader context of curriculum philosophy and of the social and moral purposes of Soviet education; the implicit or ‘hidden’ curriculum is also considered.

Book excerpt: Star Gate is the largest funded program in the history of psi research receiving about $19.933 million in funding from 1972 to 1995. Researchers from SRI International, and later at Science Applications International Corporation, in association with various U.S. intelligence agencies participated in this program. Using the remote viewing method, research focused on understanding the applicability and nature of psi in general but mostly upon informational psi. Volume 1: Remote Viewing (1972-1984) and Volume 2: Remote Viewing (1985-1995) include all aspects of RV including laboratory trials and several operational results. Volume 3: Psychokinesis focuses on laboratory investigations. Volume 4: Operational Remote Viewing: Government Memorandums and Reports includes an analysis of the applied remote viewing program and a selection of documents that provide a narrative on the behind the scenes activities of Star Gate. In a total of 504 separate missions from 1972 to 1995, remote viewing produced actionable intelligence prompting 89 percent of the customers to return with additional missions. The Star Gate data indicate that informational psi is a valid phenomenon. These data have led to the development of a physics and neuroscience based testable model for the underlying mechanism, which considers informational psi as a normal, albeit atypical, phenomenon. The Star Gate data found insufficient evidence to support the causal psi (psychokinesis) hypothesis.

Kapitza, Volume III contains the scientific research papers, lectures, biographical accounts, and historical, philosophical, and sociological discussions of P. L. Kapitza. The book is a compilation of various papers written and delivered by P. L. Kapitza that covers a wide range of topics. Research on strong magnetic fields; research work on helium, which won him the Stalin Prize; a brief account of the cod-liver-oil industry; and discussions on magnetic investigations and experiments on stereoscopic films are just some of the scientific papers presented. The compendium also contains several biographical papers on Newton, Benjamin Franklin and the Russian poet and scientist, Lomonosov; and non-scientific papers such as the banning of nuclear weapons, a discussion he had with Bertrand Russell; and papers that deal with some aspects of the best way to organize science. Scientists, biographers, philosophers, historians, and students in the field of science will find this book an interesting read.
