Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief History of Old Fort Niagara And it was the knowledge Of a carrying place around these falls that pointed out to those engaged in, and ambitious to control, the fur trade with the Western Indians, in which list La Salle stands out prominently, that a fortified store house at or near the end of this portage would be a priceless advantage to its possessors. And during the long period above referred to when France and England were making every effort to gain control of this locality, the fur traders rendered valuable services in furtherance of the ambitions of their respective nations, although, of course, these fur traders' object was a purely mercenary one. But the Indians, prompted thereto partly by the always enduring feuds between the Huron and Iroquois stocks, but mainly by their keen insight into the real ambitions of the white men faithful and friendly to the French and the English alternately, but only as fear of their strength or benefits to be derived from them impelled clearly foresaw the danger to their race if a stronghold was ever Obtained at the portage, and persistently refused to allow one to be erected; and it was only after a struggle of 50 years that France succeeded in getting near this spot a fortified structure, that prom ised to be, and though soon after removed seven miles distant to the mouth of the river, proved to be, a permanency. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Niagara River The Niagara river flows from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. The shore of Erie is more than 300 feet higher than the shore of Ontario; but if you pass from the higher shore to the lower, you do not descend at a uniform rate. Starting from Lake Erie and going northward, you travel upon a plain not level but with only gentle undulations until you approach the shore of Lake Ontario, and then suddenly you find yourself on the brink of a high bluff or cliff overlooking the lower lake, and separated from it only by a narrow strip of lping plain. The birds-eye view in Plate I is constructed to Show the relations of these various features, the two lakes, the broad plateau lying a little higher than the shore of Lake Erie, the cliff, which geologists call the Niagara Escarpment, and the narrow plain at its foot. Where the Niagara river leaves Lake Erie at Buffalo and enters the plain, a low ridge of rock crosses its path, and in traversing this its water is troubled; but it soon becomes smooth, spreads out broadly, and indolently loiters on the plain. For three-fourths of the distance it can not be said to have a valley, it rests upon the surface of the plateau; but then its habit suddenly changes. By the Short rapid at Goat Island and by the cataract itself the water of the river is dropped 200 feet down into the plain, and thence to the cliff at Lewiston it races headlong through a deep and narrow gorge. From Lewiston to Lake Ontario there are no rapids. The river is again broad, and its channel is scored so deeply in the littoral plain that the current is relatively slow, and the level of its water surface varies but slightly from that of the lake. Book excerpt: Lewiston holds a wealth of history and legends. It reverberates with the pulse of a Niagara County town that has played a pivotal role throughout the years. It echoes the excitement of trade and traffic along the portage and the whispers from cellars of the Underground Railroad. It unfolds the proud character of a community that, today, is in the midst of a revival. Each year, Lewiston welcomes more than 350,000 visitors who come to enjoy concerts and festivals, theater productions and parks, waterways and, of course, history. Stunning images from the Lewiston Historical Society and Museum, Niagara Falls Public Libraries (New York and Ontario), Buffalo State College Library, Niagara Gazette, Tuscarora Nation Archive, and private collections illustrate Lewiston.
