Book excerpt: Insecurity in the Niger Delta: Emerging Threats in Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo and Rivers States is a European Union- funded in-depth study of the issue of insecurity in the Niger Delta, the oil producing region of Nigeria. Security in the region is usually assessed from the context of the absence of threats to the oil industry. This study goes beyond that limited view, using case studies drawn from the six states in the South-South geopolitical zone to show emerging security threats in the region and the complex network of factors behind them. The chapters address issues of insecurity such as youth gangs/cults, sea piracy and sea robbery, election violence, communal conflicts, land disputes, chieftaincy tussles, armed robbery, human trafficking, internal population displacement (IDPs), reintegration of ex-militants, youth unemployment, internet fraud, police brutality, environmental pollution, farmer-herder crises and influx of non-indigenes. The authors critically discuss the different strategies adopted by state governments and communities in the region to address insecurity and explain why these approaches have so far failed to resolve the problem in the region. The study recommends policy options that could improve the security situation for everyday people living and working in Nigeria's Niger Delta region. _________________________________ Tarila Marclint Ebiede is a Political Scientist with expertise on peacebuilding, political violence and armed insurgencies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Life of an Enigma is an engaging read about an interesting and memorable life lived under uniquely challenging surroundings and times. The book is also an anthropological, sociological, and religious inquiry into the cultures and traditions of John Okogun Omovuon’s Edo and Delta States of Nigeria covering his lifetime, 1905 -1993 with special reference to the Esan(Edo) people. Educators, students, and researchers should find the book useful in the area of British colonialism and African culture, Nigeria history, Christianity in Africa, African spiritualism and African indigenous studies. A number of stranger than fiction events and encounters that uphold faith, courage, and integrity woven into free enterprise are described using materials from Okogun’s verbal and written accounts, information obtained by the author from Okogun’s contemporaries, and the author’s experience of life in the communities. The dance culture of the people including the famous Esan acrobatic dance (YouTube) Igbabonalimin is described in detail for the first time in the narrative. The author’s professional international experience as a natural products chemist is brought to bear on many aspects of the story including the herbalism practised by his father Okogun. Okogun lived a heroic life and his story needs to be told and read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world that is increasingly being aware, in a political and cultural sense, of issues surrounding marginalised communities, this book gives a riveting account of the history, culture and politics of the Olukumi people, a marginalised Yoruba community unlike others that had hitherto been the subject of mainstream literature and debates. The Olukumi people are a bilingual (both Yoruba and Ibo) and sophisticated Black African community who were the first humans to inhabit their indigenous homeland but continue to be marginalised and discriminated by the majority newly arrived neighbours. The community practiced female to female marriages long before minority rights (like the LGBTQIA+ rights) came to be recognised even in so-called advanced Western countries like America and in Europe. It is because the Olukumis face appalling discrimination and deprivation at home that they continue to migrate. Yet, their culture of respect for minorities and tolerance for diverse opinions still survive. This book is about war and diplomacy. It is also about migration and settlement as well as a people's determination for survival and coexistence. It is told from an exclusively Olukumi perspective and written by an Olukumi indigene.
