Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Painting in Italy, Vol. 1 of 6: Umbria Florence and Siena From the Second to the Six-Teenth Century I had come under the direct influence of Mr. Ruskin. Through no fault of my own, my scheme came to nothing and when, in the year 1899, I was asked to join Mr. Strong in the work of editing this book, I gladly accepted the invitation. In the earlier stages of the preparation of these volumes Mr. Strong took an active part. He has, however, been prevented by illness from correcting the final proofs, and cannot, therefore, be held responsible for any mistakes to be found in them. It is to be hoped that the remaining volumes of this edition will be en riched by the fruits of his wide study of Italian pictures and drawings, by his fine connoisseurship, and his archaeo logical and iconographical erudition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Italy (476-1900) This volume is a mere sketch in outline; it makes no pretence to original investigation, or even to an extended examination of the voluminous literature which deals with every part of its subject. It is an attempt to give a correct impression of Italian history as a whole, and employs details only here and there, and then merely for the sake of giving greater clearness to the general outline. So brief a narrative is mainly a work of selection; and perhaps no two persons would agree upon what to put in and what to leave out. I have laid emphasis upon the matters of greatest general interest, the Papacy, the Renaissance, and the Risorgimento; and my special object has been to put in high relief those achieve ments which make Italy so charming and so interest ing to the world, and to give what space was possible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the Renaissance in Italy: Taken From the Works of John Addington Symonds It had been often represented to my husband that his "Renaissance in Italy" in a shorter form would be acceptable to many who are without the leisure or the inclination to take up the subject in the character of students. But though, through stress of other work, he was indisposed to return to the subject, he was quite willing that our friend Colonel Pearson, who has been associated with us for some years at Davos, and who is well acquainted with Italy, should carry out his own views as to what might be interesting and useful to those who would be satisfied with the subject in a more popular form. It will be seen, therefore, that in the choice of his materials Colonel Pearson's object has been to select and arrange for those who know Italy, or hope in the future to do so, whatever may sustain or promote an interest in its history, its art, and its literature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of Early Italian Painters: And of the Progress of Painting in Italy To Cimabue for three centuries had been awarded the lofty title of Father of Modern Painting and to him, on the authority of Vasari, had been ascribed the merit, or rather the miracle, of having revived the art of painting when utterly lost, dead and buried of having by his single genius brought light out of darkness, form and beauty out of chaos. The error or gross exaggeration of Vasari in making these claims for his countryman has been pointed out by later authors. Some have even denied to Cimabue any share Whatever in the regeneration of art; and, at all events, it seems clear that his claims have been much over-stated; that, so far from painting being a lost art in the thirteenth century, and the race of artists annihilated, as Va' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Midsummer of Italian Art IN the first edition of Midsummer I stated that my Object was to provide a comprehensive account of the greatest Italian painters, which might serve both as a book Of reference for American travellers in Europe, and to revive the recollections Of what they had seen after their return. In revising my book I have consid ered the request Of my friends and critics for a more thorough and complete analysis of the works of Raphael and Michel Angelo, as the two artists in whom the pub lic takes the liveliest interest. I have also amended the account Of Leonardo da Vinci so as to introduce a state ment of every picture which can be ascribed to him on reasonable grounds. Certain additions have also been made to the account of Correggio, but the similarity of his designs makes a complete list of his paintings of less importance than the others. In order to make the book as perfect as possible, I have compared my previous statements with those of the most distinguished writers on the subject, and where I became satisfied that I was formerly in error I have made such changes as were necessary, giving credit to the proper authority in a foot-note. This applies, how ever, chiefly to the account of Raphael, and in a less degree to Leonardo and Correggio. There is no thor ough-going criticism of Michel Angelo's works that I can hear of, in any language, and my own statement would seem to be the first attempt in that direction.
