Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to author Harvey Bialy, the work of molecular biologist Peter Duesberg has been grossly distorted by the media and scientific establishments. Until recently, the scientific community--and most notably, those from the National Institute for Health--have been unwilling to look at his provocative theories of different causes for cancer and HIV/AIDS. Inspired by UC Berkeley's rare creation of an archive for Duesberg's papers, this book explores Duesberg's early groundbreaking work with viruses and oncogenes, his contentious fights with other scientists, and the profound influence of his life's work.

This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a compilation of high-yield, at-a-glance summaries in quick reference format for various topics that are frequently encountered by pathologists in the daily practice or on the boards. The focus is not organ-based histologic criteria, but rather everything else that goes into pathologic diagnoses but is difficult to keep committed to memory. The emphasis is on immunohistochemistry, special stains, grading systems, molecular markers, tumor syndromes, and helpful clinical references. Also included are morphologic summaries that encompass high-yield material cutting across all organ systems, such as an illustrated guide for microorganisms, tumor differentials, and an illustrated glossary of pathologic descriptors. The book has a unique format in that the information is presented primarily in tables and diagrams accompanied by brief and to-the-point explanatory text. The guiding principle was to boil the information down to the essentials but with just enough commentary to be accessible to a newcomer to pathology and to serve as a quick reference to a practicing pathologist. In the 7 years since its initial publication, there have been considerable advances in surgical pathology, particularly immunohistochemical stains, molecular diagnostics, and histologic grading schemes. In the second edition, the content has been thoroughly updated to incorporate these developments, while retaining the overall scope and concise format of the first edition. In addition, the reader will find summaries for many new topics as well as multiple new cartoon illustrations and diagrams.

The authors are early-career pathologists who have compiled this book from the perspective of pathologists-in-training. The focus is not organ-based histologic criteria, but rather everything else that goes into pathologic diagnoses but is difficult to keep committed to memory. The emphasis is on immunohistochemistry, special stains, grading systems, molecular markers, tumor syndromes, and helpful clinical references. The book has a unique format in that the information is presented primarily in tables and diagrams accompanied by minimal explanatory text. It is intended to serve as a ‘peripheral brain’ for pathology residents and also practicing pathologists, where frequently needed information is readily accessible and easy to navigate.

Book excerpt: The pUrpOSE! of this conference was not to define the two areas that are being bound, which might be a well nigh impossible proposition. Rather, its focus was to concentrate on the mechanistic similarities between promotion and progression. Are the areas involved within the boundaries a continuum? Are these two simultaneous processes? Or are some of the affected cells in the stage of promotion when at the same time others have undergone irreversi ble changes tha. t position them in the stage of progression? Or are these two stages the same thing, but called by different names? To explore such concepts we assembled investigators with various back grounds and asked them to specifically address these and other questions about "The Boundaries", within the context of the session to which they con tributed. The conference lasted two and a half days, from Wednesday to Friday. There were at least four speakers per session with morning and after noon sessions each day, except on Friday when the meeting ended at noon. The first day, each speaker had 25 minutes to present a position, followed by five minutes of discussion. At the end of the session there were 40 or 50 minutes of exchange on all the issues examined. For the remaining days, there were 25 minutes of presentation and 15 minutes of discussion.

The structure and function of each factor is covered in detail, as well as its receptor and postreceptor mechanism of action and its possible role in neoplastic processes. The book also explores the present state of the knowledge about megakaryocyte growth factors and macrophage-derived growth factors.

Book excerpt: Regulation of gene expression at the level of transcription is one of the major determinants of proper cellular proliferation and differentiation. The key players in these processes are sequence-specific DNA binding transcription factor proteins which coordinate programs of gene expression in the nucleus. The articles in this volume document the myriad of genetic and biochemical alterations sustained by human proto-oncogenic transcription factors which result in diverse neoplastic processes. This volume gives insights into how normal programs of gene expression can be subverted by the action of single transcription factors resulting in a specific tumor type. The book provides inspiration for exploiting these tumor-specific alterations as diagnostic, prognostic tools, or as selective therapeutic targets.
