Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short Course in Elementary Mechanics for Engineers The subject matter is divided into three parts, namely, Kinematics, Kinetics, and Statics. Much detailed discussion is omitted, and the course is written from the definition viewpoint. In considering the working principles of Statics, much emphasis is placed on the importance of moment equations. The Engineer's system of units is used. Throughout the text are many problems, a large number of these being original. In fact, it is by solving problems that a mastery of the subject is gained. Many of the problems will not be difficult to solve, but others will require the student's best effort. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Mechanics for the Practical Engineer: Engineers' Study Course From Power The subject matter of this book is an exact reproduction of a series of thirty lessons which appeared in Power as a part of the Engineers' Study Course. These lessons were intended as Home Study for those who had followed the previous courses given in Power. Each lesson was so arranged that the average home study student could thoroughly master the material given each week, before proceeding with the next lesson. To drive home the principles given, five study questions were inserted each week and the student was urged to solve these problems before referring to the answers which appeared in the next lesson. The fact that these questions combined with their answers formed a vital part of the original course is the author's only excuse for the manner in which they appear in the text. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mechanics for Engineers: A d104-Book of Intermediate Standard Engineering students constitute a fairly large proportion of those attending the Mechanics classes in technical colleges and schools, but their needs are not identical with those of the students of general science. It has recently become a common practice to provide separate classes in Mathematics, adapted to the special needs of engineering students, who are in most institutions sufficiently numerous to justify similar provision in Mechanics. The aim of this book is to provide a suitable course in the principles of Mechanics for engineering students. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mechanics: A d104-Book for Engineers This book is intended to give a working knowledge of the principles of Mechanics and to supply a foundation upon which intelligent study of Strength of Materials, Stresses in Structures, Machine Design, and other courses of more technical nature may rest. In the development of this subject, emphasis is put upon the physical character of the ideas involved, while mathematics is. employed as a convenient tool for the determination and expression of quantitative relations. Analytical and graphical methods are given together and each is interpreted in terms of the other. While the principal stress is placed upon Mechanics as a science, considerable attention is given to Mechanics as an art. In the text, in some of the problems, and in many of the illustrative examples, methods of calculation are suggested by means of which accurate results may be most readily obtained. The definitions of work and potential energy, together with the solution of problems of statics by the method of virtual work are given early. In the treatment of dynamics, the definitions of kinetic energy and its application to the conditions of variable motion are introduced as soon as possible. In equations involving acceleration or energy, the common commercial units are employed - the pound mass as the unit of mass and the weight of the pound mass as the unit of force. In order to clear up the confusion which results from the fact that physicists use one set of units while some engineering writers use another. Chapter XVIII is devoted to a discussion of the various systems. The author acknowledges his obligations to many of his colleagues who have assisted in the preparation of this book. P. W. Ott of the Department of Mechanics checked the problems of several chapters. S. A. Harbarger of the Department of English read all the manuscript and assisted in the final revision. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Mechanics A few years' experience, both as Student and as Tutor, has led me to a grateful appreciation of the method of teach ing which is at present pursued by our University; one of the highest aims of which is to promote habits of rapid and accurate thought, and in this it is eminently successful. But the nature of the training adopted for this purpose has proved injurious to the style of our Mathematical Literature, more especially in the department of Natural Philosophy. Our educational books of Natural Science, in seeking to fulfil the requirements of the senate-house, have become mere collections of definite propositions; generally containing, it is true, all the known facts and the mathematical deductions dependent upon them which appertain to the respective subjects, but seldom offering the smallest relief to the barren ness which is incidental to such compositions: in this shape they have lost all the fulness and freshness of life; all popular illustration, all freedom of expression has been denied them; they have been deprived, in fact, of nearly all the charms that usually render the pursuit of science fascinating to the young. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theoretical Mechanics: An Elementary Text-Book In a first course in Theoretical Mechanics the primary object to be gained by the student is a thorough grasp of fundamental princi ples. In most cases it is impossible to go beyond this object in the time available for the course. In the preparation of this text-book, the aim has been to present the fundamental principles in as clear and simple a manner as possible, and to enforce them by a sufficient number of illustrative examples; The examples are for the most part simple applications of the theory presented in the text, many numerical exercises being included. The solution of exercises in volving numerical data forms a part of the work of the student of which the importance should be emphasized. In the desire to cover as much ground as - possible, such work is too apt to be neglected. The mathematical training required for using the book is that usually implied by an elementary knowledge of Differential and Inte gral Calculus. The most essential portions of Part I (statics) may, however, be read without such knowledge. As regards arrangement, the aim has been to observe the order of difficulty of the different topics treated, so far as this was possible without doing violence to the logical relations. This is one reason for placing Statics first, instead of treating it in its strictly logical position as a special case of Kinetics. Part II may, however, be read before Part I, if any teacher should prefer this order. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief Course in Elementary Dynamics The problems at the ends of various sections have been selected out of a card index which has been collected from various sources through a number of years. Few of them are original, but the sources from which they were obtained have been lost. The author is under deep obligation to his colleague Assistant Professor Arthur T. Jones who has read the entire proof and has pointed out several errors and rendered clear, many obscure passages. To Professor Jones is also due the entire section on wave motion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Mechanics: For Engineering Students This little volume is the outcome of a series of lectures on elementary mechanics, delivered to the students in the engineering courses of the Cooper Union Day and Night Schools, with the intention of partially clearing the ground for some of the engineering subjects of the subsequent years. In all cases, some knowledge of trigonometry and elementary physics has been assumed; and it is further assumed that the instructor using the text is thoroughly familiar with the students' pretraining in these branches. An attempt has been made to develop the formulæ from the most fundamental principles; it being the opinion of the author that in this way the student derives the greatest amount of good. No excuse is made, and none need be made, for employing the poundal as the unit force, and g as a proportionality factor. A short chapter on the determination of maxima and minima values, by algebraic and trigonometric methods, is given with the hope that it will prove useful in solving problems, and also arouse an interest in mathematical analysis. Our aim is to provide readers with the highest quality reproductions of fiction and non-fiction literature that has stood the test of time. The many thousands of books in our collection have been sourced from libraries and private collections around the world. The titles that Trieste Publishing has chosen to be part of the collection have been scanned to simulate the original. Our readers see the books the same way that their first readers did decades or a hundred or more years ago. Books from that period are often spoiled by imperfections that did not exist in the original. Imperfections could be in the form of blurred text, photographs, or missing pages. It is highly unlikely that this would occur with one of our books. Our extensive quality control ensures that the readers of Trieste Publishing's books will be delighted with their purchase. Our staff has thoroughly reviewed every page of all the books in the collection, repairing, or if necessary, rejecting titles that are not of the highest quality. This process ensures that the reader of one of Trieste Publishing's titles receives a volume that faithfully reproduces the original, and to the maximum degree possible, gives them the experience of owning the original work.We pride ourselves on not only creating a pathway to an extensive reservoir of books of the finest quality, but also providing value to every one of our readers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mechanics: An Elementary d104-Book Theoretical and Practical I believe it to be desirable that a student should commence the study of Mechanics With Kinematics and Kinetics, and 'have therefore arranged the book on this plan. At the same time it Will, I hope, be found that the Statics is in great measure independent of the other part of the subject, though at the cost of some repetition. It will be possible therefore for a teacher to take it before the Kinematics. In the Third Part some of the simple experimental laws of Hydrostatics are discussed and explained. The book has grown considerably beyond the limits of my lectures, though it is by no means a complete treatise on Elementary Mechanics still I h0pe it may prove useful as an introduction to the subject.
