Book excerpt: A Sharp Spear Point, a new fantasy novel in the Spear series, is as surprising as it is addictive. The sequel to A Spear in Flight, the novel continues the compelling story of the Realm and the Spears who protect it. Three Spears-fighters barely beyond childhood, impeccably trained in fighting, moral values, and endurance, the defenders of the people-rise to battle enemies who threaten to destroy lives and the political structure holding their Realm together. Bethany, Jon, and Thomasyn are impressive and complex characters and, young though they are, their skill, courage, and wisdom give the story its vitality. Jon's growing mercilessness spawns the trepidation of his friends; the unsettling nature of his rising psychosis is felt at every turn. After the Spears discover the unrest of the spiritual, hard-working dwarfs and encounter a village under the control of trolls, they ultimately must face this menace that grows within their triad. Brilliantly executed, this novel unleashes dangers and discoveries powerfully woven together and irrefutably original. - Vivian Delchamps, Editor

Book Synopsis Wagner's Ring in 1848 by : Richard Wagner
Download or read book Wagner's Ring in 1848 written by Richard Wagner and published by Camden House. This book was released on 2010 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1848 Richard Wagner began what would become the largest stage work of his career, the Ring of the Nibelung. In preparation for the task he composed an overview of the Nibelung myth designed to lead to a drama; he then composed the verse "libretto" Siegfried's Death. Although he abandoned the idea of a single opera on Siegfried in favor of the huge project that developed out of it in the succeeding years -- the Ring cycle -- he did consider the two early documents important enough to include them in his collected works. The present volume seeks to inform the English-speaking reader in three ways: by providing modern, reliable translations of the two Wagner texts, which are otherwise not available (the German original is provided on facing pages); by furnishing an overview of German scholarship available to Wagner and others working on the Nibelung legend in the first half of the nineteenth century; and by making available a bibliography of further reading. The volume will be useful to students of musicology, to students and historians of myth and legend, and to all Wagnerians interested in the genesis of the Ring cycle. Accessible to the general reader, it maintains scholarly rigor and provides information about materials not available in English. Edward R. Haymes is Professor in the Department of Modern Languages at Cleveland State University.

Book Synopsis Hellenistic Epigrams by : Alexander Sens
Download or read book Hellenistic Epigrams written by Alexander Sens and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-19 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greek 'literary' epigrams constitute one of the most versatile and dynamic poetic forms in the Hellenistic period. Originally modeled on the anonymous epitaphs and dedications inscribed on monuments throughout antiquity, these short poems came to include a variety of subtypes and served as a vehicle for Hellenistic poets to experiment with themes and motifs from other genres. This edition introduces students to a wide selection of epigrams from the third and second centuries BCE. It provides substantial help in construing the Greek and will be appropriate for those approaching the genre for the first time, whilst also containing material of interest to scholars. It includes work by the most important epigrammatists of this period, with substantial attention paid to the way these poets engage with the epigraphic and literary traditions. The Introduction provides an overview of the history of the genre and of its formal features, including dialect and meter.

Download or read book Waging War written by Wayne E. Lee and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2016 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Waging War: Conflict, Culture, and Innovation in World History provides a wide-ranging examination of war in human history, from the beginning of the species until the current rise of the so-called Islamic State. Although it covers many societies throughout time, the book does not attempt to tell all stories from all places, nor does it try to narrate "important" conflicts. Instead, author Wayne E. Lee describes the emergence of military innovations and systems, examining how they were created and then how they moved or affected other societies. These innovations are central to most historical narratives, including the development of social complexity, the rise of the state, the role of the steppe horseman, the spread of gunpowder, the rise of the west, the bureaucratization of military institutions, the industrial revolution and the rise of firepower, strategic bombing and nuclear weapons, and the creation of "people's war."

Looking back, he was surprised to find that the world he was standing on was like a grain of sand on the Ganges, like a speck of dust. Where to go...
