Book excerpt: In Dust and Shadow Sherlock Holmes hunts down Jack the Ripper with impeccably accurate historical detail, rooting the Whitechapel investigation in the fledgling days of tabloid journalism and clinical psychology. This astonishing debut explores the terrifying prospect of hunting down one of the world's first serial killers without the advantage of modern forensics or profiling. Sherlock's desire to stop the killer who is terrifying the East End of London is unwavering from the start, and in an effort to do so he hires an "unfortuate" known as Mary Ann Monk, the friend of a fellow streetwalker who was one of the Ripper's earliest victims. However, when Holmes himself is wounded in Whitechapel attempting to catch the villain, and a series of articles in the popular press question his role in the crimes, he must use all his resources in a desperate race to find the man known as "The Knife" before it is too late. Penned as a pastiche by the loyal and courageous Dr. Watson, Dust and Shadow recalls the ideals evinced by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's most beloved and world-renowned characters, while testing the limits of their strength in a fight to protect the women of London, Scotland Yard, and the peace of the city itself.

In a society plagued by racism, segregation, and private prisons, this operation saves lives with a controversial method--by turning people white. Like any father, our unnamed narrator just wants the best for his son Nigel, a biracial boy whose black birthmark is getting bigger by the day. But in order to afford Nigel's whiteness operation, our narrator must make partner as one of the few black associates at his law firm, jumping through a series of increasingly absurd hoops--from diversity committees to plantation tours to equality activist groups--in a tragicomic quest to protect his son. This electrifying, suspenseful novel is, at once, a razor-sharp satire of surviving racism in America and a profoundly moving family story. In the tradition ofRalph Ellison's Invisible Man, We Cast a Shadow fearlessly shines a light on the violence we inherit, and on the desperate things we do for the ones we love"--

Book excerpt: The International Scientific Spring Meeting of the Astronomische Ge sellschaft (AG) held at Bamberg in April 1991 was devoted to "Vari abilities in Stars and Galaxies". Time-dependent phenomena are observed in a wide range of as tronomical objects. They are caused by different physical mechanisms (for example by pulsation, by accretion, or by dramatic eruptive events in connection with mass outflow) producing observable intensity vari ations through all wavelengths. Many of the papers in this volume are concerned with galactic stars showing such behaviour (for ex ample cataclysmic variables, symbiotic stars, luminous blue variables (LBVs) and novae). Intrinsic variations of the, magnetic field struc ture on observable time scales are, for instance, a peculiarity of cool, solar-like stars and represent a useful tool to study differential rotation and cycles of activity. Recent results on the investigation of gas motions in the inner regions of the Milky Way system, a study of the bipolar galaxy M 82, observations of variable extragalactic radio sources, the variability of emission lines in active galactic nuclei (AGN) as well as continuum variations of quasars and AGN are discussed by several authors. The yearbook series Reviews in Modern Astronomy of the AG to bring the scientific events of the was established in 1988 in order meetings of the society to the attention of the worldwide astronomical community.

Book excerpt: Winter has finally broken its hold over the Kingdom — but as the snows melt, trouble springs up in its place. A dark cloud hangs over Midlan: the army has retreated behind its high walls, not a word slips out from between its gates. And rumors swirl that the King has gone mad. Kael knows nothing of this: his sights are on the plains. But with his horrible luck following him wherever he goes, it doesn’t take long for his plan to unravel. He finds himself trapped in Gilderick's clutches and forced to work as a slave, laboring alongside the giants — who don’t exactly welcome him. In fact, he begins to suspect that some would rather see him dead. If Kael is going to have any chance to survive, he’ll have to come up with a new plan — and quickly. Meanwhile, Kyleigh finds herself locked in a sprint across the desert. Time presses against her: there is a force gathered in Whitebone that threatens to undo everything, should it reach the plains. But her pride blinds her to the dangers, and it isn't long before she and her companions are lost among the towering dunes. The strange magic of the sun drains their strength, misfortune nips at their heels, but they are determined to save their friends. And so they'll brave the desert's every peril — be it storms or cave trolls … or flesh-eating worms.
