Moses and Marks Ottinger. It is brie y described in Catalogue XI of Messrs. Schwager Fraenkel, Husiatyn, under no. 110. It is an autograph written in a cursive German hand; it measures 13-7 xg-5 cm. It begins with the title numm 15d, followed by three blank leaves. The autobiography fills fols. I - II a; between fols. Lo and II the author evidently tore out a leaf. The next page has a short note on his travels, which forms a kind of continuation of the text, and is printed here as such, together with a set of good resolutions drawn up at various times, which contain some further biographical material and are characteristic of the writer, but do not seem to require translation. They are found on fol. 34 of the manuscript. F 013. 12 - 25 contain ethical and philo sophical re ections in fifteen paragraphs, interrupted by cabbalistic combinations (15 a) and blank pages (15 b - 17 a). Modena (1571-1648) produced an autobiography that documents in poignant detail the turbulent life of his family in the Jewish ghetto of Venice. The text of this work is well known to Jewish scholars but has never before been translated from the original Hebrew, except in brief excerpts. This complete translation, based on Modena's autograph manuscript, makes available in English a wealth of historical material about Jewish family life of the period, religion in daily life, the plague of 1630-1631, crime and punishment, the influence of kabbalistic mysticism, and a host of other subjects. The translator, Mark R. Cohen, and four other distinguished scholars add commentary that places the work in historical and literary context. Modena describes his fascination with the astrology and alchemy that were important parts of the Jewish and general culture of the seventeenth century. He also portrays his struggle against poverty and against compulsive gambling, which, cleverly punning on a biblical verse, he called the "sin of Judah." In addition, the book contains accounts of Modena's sorrow over his three sons: the death of the eldest from the poisonous fumes of his own alchemical laboratory, the brutal murder of the youngest, and the exile of the remaining son. In the Introduction which precedes the Autobiography, I have attempted - firstly, to describe Lord Herbert's varied character, as displayed in his own writings and in historical records and secondly, to review his eminent achievements in literature and philosophy, Of which he himself has given no account. In the essay which succeeds the Auto biography, I have tried to trace his political career in detail from 1624 - the year when his own memoirs abruptly terminate - to 1648, the date of his death. In an appendix I have printed several original illustrative documents, many extracts from Herbert's unpublished correspondence, and some historical notes on topics to which frequent allusion is made in the Autobiography on the assumption - no longer justifiable that they are matters of common knowledge. Former editors have treated the work as a mere curiosity of literature. I have endeavoured in my notes and elsewhere to prove that it deserves the serious attention of the student, not only of English literature, but of Engish social history in the early seventeenth century.
