Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Set of Holiday Sermons Granted all this, namely, that the burden of our message be true respecting the generality of men, I take it that here as everywhere are gathered hosts of the heart-sick and soul-weary, who take leave of the speeding year with nothing of regret, who look forward to the incoming twelve month without aught of hopefulness. Saddened by sorrow, embittered by disappointment, grieved by misfortune, these tell us that our march from year to year is futile and profit less. With much show of wisdom and more of pathetic help lessness, these prophets of evil point out to us the vanity of time's flight, that all men are but as wanderers along the desert-sands, leaving behind them, at best, foot-prints which the faintest wind will dislodge or the earliest storm blotout from sight forever. And, at last, as if to adduce an unanswerable argument, these, the believers in the final triumph of void and darkness, think to prove the aimless destiny of man by comparing his course in life to the ship which sails across the seas and leaves no trace or memory of its passage. But is this similtnde just and can we carry this analogy to its logical end? Is it indeed true that the bark of a human life sails tracklessly across the ocean of time? Let us see! Lately, I was hastening homeward from across the sea. In a certain sense it-was true enough that the vast ship which bore us ploughed its mighty way through the watery waste, leaving no mark or record of its passing. In very truth it might be said that ours was a pathless, trackless flight; for how soon are the seething, foaming billows in the wake of a boat swallowed up in the stillness of the emerald deep! Trackless was our voyage, but not aimless. Trackless it may be, viewing merely the manner of our going from place to place. Was that voyage aimless or even pathless, however. Which brought us safely to our appointed goal, distant by thousands of miles from our starting-point? Was that journey aimless which from far, far away winged us unto the embrace of loved ones, eagerly awaiting our return after weeks or months or years of separation? Was that sailing aimless which carried num bers of young people from the. Stifling breath of their native lands to the invigorating atmosphere of our free country, which transplanted hundreds of gifted, ambitious youths from places where energy and aspiration were fore doomed to failure, to our own country, which rewards talent, honors enterprise and crowns industry? Look to the sea and you will find no sign or reminder that this noble bark was ever piloted from shore to shore. The record must be sought and will be found in the hearts of the re united, in the boundless hopes of those to whom America spells opportunity for the gaining of great riches, or honor able fame, or high place. Book excerpt: Alex Gondola says that in our modern culture we sometimes "experience Christmas at its worst: overcommercialized, expensive, exhausting, nearly devoid of spiritual significance." In this collection of twenty cogent and inspiring sermons for Advent and Christmas, he reminds us of the key to putting the season in its proper perspective -- "Don't forget the child!" For it is only when we are drawn nearer to the child of Bethlehem, celebrating the simple beauties of the stable, that we can escape from the rush of the season into the divine light of saving grace heralded by the birth of God's Son. This volume is an exceptional source of inspiration for sermon preparation, but it's also excellent for personal devotions exploring the meaning of Advent and Christmas. It's a great Christmas gift! Alex Gondola has given us a lovely round of Advent and Christmas meditations. They are reflective and delightful. They shine with little gems of human interest stories that can light our path throughout the whole year. Catherine Clark Kroeger Editor, Study Bible for Women (The New Testament) This outstanding collection of Advent/Christmas sermons brings rich insights and new appreciation for the wondrous story of Christ's coming. Whether you are in a pew or in a pulpit on Sundays, you will be grateful for this book. Dr. William P. Book excerpt: Almost every month in the year has a secular holiday -- and on those "special" Sundays, preachers need to balance honoring the occasion with maintaining their focus on the proclamation of God's Word. It can be a challenging task, but it also presents a great opportunity to uncover the religious significance of our civic celebrations. In this extensive volume of inspiring messages, Alex Gondola draws on the rich variety of American culture and scriptural insight to remind us that holidays truly are holy days. Great for personal reading, adult study groups, or fresh sermon ideas, Holidays Are Holy Days is a versatile resource that you'll draw on throughout the year. Sermons are included for: - New Year's Day - Martin Luther King Day - Super Bowl Sunday - Valentine's Day - Presidents' Day - St. Patrick's Day - April Fool's Day - Earth Day - Mother's Day - Memorial Day - Father's Day - Independence Day - Labor Day - Grandparent's Day - Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples' Day - Halloween/All Saints - Reformation Sunday - Veterans' Day - Thanksgiving - Christmas How does one avoid simplistic, even overly sentimental, preaching and yet address themes that are important to many American churchgoers? In this book Alex Gondola masterfully navigates his way into insightful sermons on themes which often tax the imagination of excellent preachers. Novice and seasoned preachers will benefit from this book, and all persons who read it will be inspired. Benjamin Griffin President Emeritus Andover Newton Theological School This is biblical preaching in the best sense: informative, creatively theological, challenging, invitational, occasionally wry, always participatory, and faithful to the God whose interests inform every page. In these sermons Gondola weaves hard data, history, and practical theology in the service of challenging Christians to live faithfully in the 21st century. Nancy S. Taylor Minister and President Massachusetts Conference, United Church of Christ Designed for those special days in our "civil religion" that preachers often find challenging, these expertly crafted sermons make an intelligent, creative use of scripture that demonstrates the relevance of those ancient texts to the present day. Filled with stories from everyday life, they reach both the head and the heart, and they have a social conscience. Kenneth Cauthen John Price Crozer Griffith Professor of Theology Emeritus Colgate-Rochester-Crozer Divinity School Author of Rejoicing in Life's "Melissa Moments" Alex A. Gondola Jr., is senior pastor of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Wapakoneta, Ohio. He previously served Dennis Union Church in Dennis, Massachusetts. A graduate of Allegheny College (B.A.), Andover Newton Theological School (M.Div.), and Colgate Rochester Divinity School (D.Min.), Gondola has also studied at Hartford Seminary and the New College of Divinity of the University of Edinburgh (Scotland). He is the author of Come As You Are, Pray Like This... and Don't Forget The Child (CSS), and also contributed several stewardship sermons to the CSS anthology From Every Angle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here are sermons, which I can say proudly are by my pastor, which bury into some of the lectionary's Old Testament texts. They get at them in the context of the message of the whole gospel. They address the issues we face with candor. They will stimulate your imagination and your faith, just as his preaching stimulates those of us in his congregation week by week. Paul Westermeyer Professor of Church Music Luther Seminary St. Paul, Minnesota In Bethlehem the rules are different. We get by giving. We win by losing. We live by dying. These are principles set forth by a God who comes to us, not under Herod's golden crown, but Jesus' thorny crown, not with legions of soldiers, but legions of angels, not in great Jerusalem, but in tiny Bethlehem. Let us begin our journey there. -- from the Advent 3 sermon Robert A. Hausman writes that once again in Advent, we tell Israel's story of hope against hope. We believe the promise of a shoot coming forth from a dead stump, of a king who executes justice. "In faith we are ready to be called by the name, 'The Lord is our righteousness.' We remember not only the promise, but also the fulfillment," says the author. The seventeen sermons in this book are based on the First Lesson texts primarily from Isaiah and Jeremiah. The sermons follow the Revised Common Lectionary. Robert A. Hausman, St. Paul, Minnesota, is pastor of the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection. In addition to his parish ministry, he has been a campus pastor, a college and seminary professor, and a book editor. He holds a doctorate from the University of Chicago.

This book was released on 2013-11 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Spurgeon, the “Prince of Preachers,” was very mindful of the need to avoid seeing Christmas as a merely religious holiday, open to commercialization and frivolity. Accordingly, throughout most of his extensive ministry he refused to alter his teaching schedule to fit in a “Christmas” sermon, as is so common today. Looking through Spurgeon’s vast teaching archive, we find only 19 instances in which special attention was given to the topic of Christmas. Spurgeon’s focus in these 19 sermons is overwhelmingly the who and why of Christmas. He marveled at the fact that God would send his only Son into the world for people who in no way deserved it. Christ came into the world to save sinners. That was Spurgeon’s focus 150 years ago. We need that message now more than ever. Joy to the world, the Lord has come!
